Insulin glulisine in the management of diabetes
Insulin glulisine is appealing in principle, but the advantages of this drug over the other rapid-acting insulin analogs are still relatively unknown. The frequency of hypoglycemia, convenience in the timing of administration, and improvements in terms of HbA1c seem similar among the rapid-acting insulin analogs, including insulin glulisine. Only properly randomized long-term clinical studies with insulin glulisine will reveal the true value of this novel insulin analog
El orientalismo de Luis Feito, sobre sus bases del zen y las influencias taoístas.
The thesis approaches the study of Luis Feito's work from the perspective of East Asian thought, tracing the traces left by the philosophy of Tao and Zen Buddhism in his work. It also questions and responds to the way in which the Spanish artist approached them in Paris through the work of two important Asian painters, Zao Wou Ki, of Chinese origin, and Sugai Kumi, of Japanese origin, as well as the Japanese calligraphic group Bokujinkai. Also the work of other Western artists, who had already absorbed Eastern philosophy, such as Kazimir Malévich and Mark Rothko. The Parisian environment in the 1950s and 1960s was very permeable to these new thoughts that were spreading and becoming popular.
He also analyses the work of the Zen monk Shitao, entitled "Discourse on the painting of the monk Bitter Gourd", which was written in the 17th century and published in Spanish in 2012. For Luis Feito it became a bedside book of which he said it contained everything he had learned over time about East Asian painting and gesture.
The methodology underpinning the bulk of this research has been phenomenological in nature, which in Husserl's words is a way of approaching the world. It has allowed us to tackle the specific study of the subject by considering the point of view of each of those involved, from artists to artists, studying all kinds of experiences, emotions, reasoning and perceptions, all conveniently contextualised in the corresponding artistic period. The texts and plastic creations of the creators involved in the research have been the objects of study.
The great difficulty that the study manages to overcome is the lack of publications on the subject of Zen and Taoism in Spain, overcome with the use of primary and secondary sources in Chinese and Japanese.
After the work carried out, there is a great final conclusion which leads to the affirmation that Luis Feito's intuitive character in his work was strengthened by his deepening in the thought of Zen and Tao, as well as by the artistic formalisation of this thought.La tesis aborda el estudio de la obra de Luis Feito desde la perspectiva del pensamiento de Asia Oriental, rastreando los posos que la filosofía del tao y del budismo zen han dejado en su obra. Así mismo se interroga y responde al modo en que el artista español se aproximó a ellos en París a través de la obra de dos importantes pintores asiáticos, Zao Wou Ki, de origen chino, y Sugai Kumi, de origen japonés, así como del grupo caligráfico japonés Bokujinkai. También la obra de otros artstas occidentales, que ya habían absorbido la filosofía oriental, como Kazimir Malevich y Mark Rothko. El ambiente parisino en los años cincuenta y sesenta fue muy permeable a estos nuevos pensamientos que se estaban difundiendo y popularizando.
Así mismo, se analiza la obra del monje zen Shitao, titulada Discurso acerca de la pintura del monje Calabaza amarga, que escrita en el siglo XVII, fue publicada en castellano en 2012. Para Luis Feito se convirtió en un libro de cabecera del que dijo que contenía todo lo que a lo largo del tiempo había aprendido de la pintura y el gesto de Asia Oriental.
La metodología sobre la que se sustenta el grueso de esta investigación ha sido de carácter fenomenológico, que en palabras de Husserl resulta una forma de acercarse al mundo. Nos ha permitido afrontar el estudio específico del tema consideranto el punto de vista de cada uno de los involucrados, desde artistas a ponsadores, estudiando todo tipo de experiencias, emociones, razonamientos o percepciones, todo ello cntextualizado convenientemente en el periodo artístico correspondiente. Los textos y las creaciones plásticas de los creadores involucrados en la investigación han sido los objetos de estudio.
La gran dificultad que el estudio logra superar es la falta de publicaciones sobre el tema del zen y el taoísmo en España, superadas con el manejo de fuentes primarias y secundarias en chino y japonés.

Seismic Damage Assessment of RC Structures using Different Hysteretic Models
Estimation of seismic damage of a structure varies depending on the assumed hysteretic rules and input excitations due to indices being calculated from earthquake response time histories. In this study, effects of the different hysteretic models on damage indices were studied. First, the response of RC bridge piers during earthquakes was calculated using different hysteretic models and input motions. Then, seismic damage was evaluated by 1) a damage index based on a linear combination of the maximum deformation ratio and the energy dissipation during cyclic loadings, and 2) damage spectra of damage index, ductility and absorbed hysteretic energy for structures with various natural periods. Results showed that the non-degrading maximum value directed model was accurate enough for seismic damage analysis while the bilinear model underestimated damage because of its linear response to the low intensity cyclic loadings. The maximum value directed model was also needed to predict the damage index from the maximum velocity or the spectral intensity of the input motions
Quantification of microplastic by particle size down to 1.1 μm in surface road dust in an urban city, Japan
The impact of microplastics (MPs, plastic particles ≤5 mm) on ecosystems is of great concern. Road surfaces represent a significant source of MPs where plastic fragments are physically and chemically reduced to MPs. However, the literature lacks information on fragmentation tendencies below 11 μm. This study aimed to characterize the occurrence of MPs in road dust in different size fractions down to 1.1 μm. Road dust was collected at five sites near a major road in Kusatsu city, Japan, and partitioned by size into 13 fractions (1.1–850 μm). The coarser fractions accounted for a greater proportion of the dust. The percentage of organic matter, determined by loss on ignition, increased as the fractions became finer. Pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry was used to quantify 12 types of polymers in each fraction. The dust was found to contain nine types of MP, namely, polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polyvinylchloride (PVC), polystyrene (PS), styrene/butadiene rubber (SBR), acrylonitrile/butadiene/styrene resin (ABS), polycarbonate (PC), polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), and polyamide 66 (PA66). The total MP concentration in road dust particles by particle size fraction (concentrationf) began to increase from the 125–250 μm fraction and remained elevated in finer fractions down to 1.1 μm, indicating that MPs in the road dust micronized to at least 1.1 μm. However, for individual polymer types, the tendency for concentrationf to increase or decrease with particle size fraction varied: the concentrationf of some polymers, such as PE and PVC, remained elevated in fractions down to 1.1 μm; the concentrationf of SBR, a rubber-MP, showed a stable or decreasing trend in fractions of 7.0–11 μm and finer. Particles of PE, PVC, and some other plastics might become increasingly finer, even down to 1.1 μm. Further research is needed to understand the comminution limits of these polymers under pertinent environmental conditions
