Can osteoderms and rudiments of hind limbs of anguids living in turkey, use for skeletochronology method?
İskelet kronolojisi metodu kertenkelelerin yaşlarının hesaplanmasında güvenilir kabul edilen ve oldukça
yaygın kullanıma sahip bir metottur. Bu metot uygulanırken genellikle uzun kemiklerden (femur,
humerus, falanj vb.) elde edilen enine kesitler incelenerek, tespit edilen dinlenme çizgileri (Lag)
Skeletochronology is a widely used and considered as a reliable method for estimating the age of the
lizards. While this method is used the cross sections of the long bones (femur, humerus, phalanges etc.)
were examined, resting lines (Lag) were counted. For the species without long bones, this method
applied on vertebras and osteoderms. Using osteoderms for this method is important to estimate ages
of the species. Pseudopus apodus and Anguis fragilis complex which are the two legless lizards of the
Turkish herpetofauna, killed because of being snake-like lizards when they face the humans. Thus,
estimating this species ages will be a basis for the future conservation and monitoring studies. In this
study, osteoderms of the Anguids (Anguis fragilis complex, Pseudopus apodus) collected from the
northern part of Turkey (north part of the 40° latitude) were tested by skeletochronology. The resting
lines (Lag) were seen on the osteoderms of both species. But, Lags in a cross section of caudal vertebra
of Anguis fragilis complex were countable whereas the Lags in the cross sections of the osteoderms
were couldn’t count and can be show differences. For the Pseudopus apodus specimens, when the cross sections of the osteoderms surrounding the hind limb were examined, it was found that the Lags
showed differences even the same osteoderms. As a result, it was found that the use of osteoderms of
this species in the skeletochronology method was not appropriate and misleading results could occu
Species delimitation analysis to reveal the origin of Turkish Podarcis siculus siculus (RafinesqueSchmaltz, 1810) populations
It is possible that the origin of Podarcis sicurus, which was introduced to Turkey by humans, is based on two different source populations or that the samples introduced to different geographies may differ at the subspecies level. The rapid evolutionary processes observed in island species can similarly occur in introduced and isolated populations. In this study Tissues were taken from samples obtained from Zonguldak, Istanbul and Samsun. mtDNA gene sequences were obtained and combined with Podarcis sicurus samples from sequences downloaded from Genbank. Phylogenetic analyzes and species delimitation analyzes were executed. Accordingly results, the specimens obtained from Turkey were grouped into two different haplotypes, similar to their geographic isolation. It has been observed that these groups are different resource groups. Species delimination analyzes show that the differentiation of these haplotypes may be at the subspecies level.</p
