    Get PDF
Pesticides are widely used in agricultural production to prevent or control pests, diseases, weeds, and other plant pathogens in an effort to reduce or eliminate yield losses of cotton crop and maintain high product quality. Because of high biological activity, and in some cases, long persistence in the environment, pesticides (pyrethroids, carbamate, oganophosphate, organochlorines) may cause harmful effects to human health and to the environment. Occupational exposure to pesticides often occurs in the case of agricultural workers in open fields and greenhouses. Farmers who perform spray activity are routinely exposed to high levels of pesticides (Monocarbamide dihydrogen sulfate, pyrethroids and carbamates), than the other farm workers such as pesticide loader, evaluator. The dermal and inhalation routes of entry are typically the most common routes of farmers’ exposure to pesticides. Farmers’ exposure to pesticides can be reduced through less use of pesticides and use of the appropriate protective clothing and equipments in all stages of pesticide handling. The present study was conductedon 270 respondents from all nine blocks of Hisar district of Haryana state to create awareness amongst them regarding health problems and use of protective clothing during pesticide application. An educational package in the form of Video CD and Leaflet was used. Pamphlets were distributed; lecture-cum-demonstrations and film shows were organized. Protective clothing and accessories were also exhibited for better impact. It was recorded that respondents succeeded in acquiring awareness at post exposure level, through print and electronic media for each message viz. breathing problems (23.3%), eyes related problems (100%), skin allergy (43.3%), headache (60.3%), fainting due to inhalation of pesticide (64.33%) and stomach related problems (23.56%). &nbsp

Background: Typhoid fever is a major public health problem associated with significant morbidity and mortality in many countries. The Widal slide agglutination test is a commonly used test for diagnosing enteric fever. Limited literature is available on its diagnostic ability in comparison to the tube agglutination test. Aim of this study was carried out to evaluate the efficacy of the Widal slide agglutination test for the diagnosis of enteric fever. Methods: This cross-sectional study was done in department of microbiology in Jawahar Lal Nehru medical college and hospital, Ajmer over a period of six months from September 2013 to March 2014. A total of 640 serum samples received in the microbiology department were processed for detecting the presence of anti O and anti H agglutinins against S. typhi, S. Paratyphi A and S. Paratyphi B by slide and tube Widal agglutination tests as per standard protocols. The significant titre for O and H agglutinin, 1:160 was taken as positive. Results: Of the 154 slide Widal positive samples, 115 (18%) samples tested negative by the tube agglutination test whereas only 39 (6%) samples were positive by both slide and tube agglutination. Conclusions: Slide Widal test has high sensitivity and NPV (100%) can be used as a screening tool but due to low specificity (83.93%) any positive sample should be confirmed by tube Widal test

Background: COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) declared pandemic by WHO on 30th January 2020. Till date there is no antiviral treatment or vaccine has been developed for COVID-19. Primary preventive measures include regular hand washing, social distancing and respiratory etiquettes are only proven methods till date. Methods: A type of questionnaire based cross sectional study was conducted among the healthcare workers (HCWs) of Maharaja Suheldev Autonomous State Medical College, Bahraich. Results: In this predominantly uneducated and socially backward area, majority of participants had knowledge about COVID-19 precautionary measures and most of them are confident of winning over the disease; 77.5% were confident of successfully controlling the disease, yet maximum healthcare workers took seriously the precautionary measures. Conclusions: Good COVID-19 knowledge is associated with optimistic attitudes and appropriate practices towards COVID-19, suggesting that health education programs aimed at improving COVID-19 knowledge are helpful for encouraging an optimistic attitude and maintaining safe practices

DOES MUTUAL FUND MANAGER’S ATTRIBUTES IMPACT FUND PERFORMANCE? EVIDENCE FROM INDIA

    Get PDF
This paper examines the impact of two managerial characteristics – qualification and work experience on the fund performance of various mutual fund schemes in India. We analyse 1508 fund managers during the period 2005–2018 using panel OLS regression. Our results suggest that work experience of the managers positively affects the performance of the open-ended schemes. After segregating the data into different schemes and different qualification categories, we find that the number of years, for which the manager is handling a scheme, is positively related to fund performance for almost all the schemes and qualifications. Further, we find evidence to support the notion that better quality of education and specialised courses also contribute to improving the fund performance. In India, the mutual fund industry is expected to grow at an exponential rate in the coming years, and this study provides an insight into the characteristics of the fund managers impacting the performance of such funds

Occupational Exposure to Blood among Healthcare Workers in National Capital Territory of Delhi

    Get PDF
A cross-sectional study on occupational exposure to blood (OEB) among healthcare workers (HCWs) revealed that out of 416 HCWs a total of 139 HCWs encountered 174 OEBs during preceding 6 months, either in the form of high-risk OEBs (OEB-HR, n=101) or potentially risky OEBs (OEB-PR, n=73) with an occurrence rate of 0.49 and 0.35 per person year respectively. The occurrence of OEB-HR was found to be the highest among nurses followed by residents and interns although occurrence of OEB-PR was found to be the highest among laboratory technicians. The occurrence rate of OEB was found to decrease with increasing duration of working experience. Coverage of immunization against HBV and training on safety precautions were less among HCWs with shorter duration of experience. Manipulation of needle or sharp was the major type of activity associated with both OEB-HR and OEB-PR (48.5% and 60.3% respectively) while fatigue was mainly considered by the HCWs to be responsible for the subgroup of exposures in both categories that were unrelated to adherence to safety precautions. Seroconversion for HBV (HBsAg) was recorded in two exposures (one each OEB-HR and OEB-PR categories), both in private setting, from sources with unknown serostatus. The present study points out the need for due recognition of the risk involved in exposure of intact skin to blood in healthcare, expansion of HBV vaccination coverage and mandatory training on standard precautions in healthcare at the entry point in their profession

Materials are the key resources in construction industry, since no production is possible without materials. It forms a major contribution of the cost of the construction and therefore proper control over their procurement, storage, issue, movement and consumption is necessary. Material of required quality and quantity is made available so that will be substantial saving in cost, time and also improve quality of construction. Material cost being in the range of 50% to 60% of the total cost of the project. Uncontrolled supply of material may result in excessive supply. Total Quality Management (TQM) is one of the most popular modern management concepts.TQM is a quality management system which pursues excellence in customer satisfaction through continuous improvements of products and process by the total involvement and dedication of everyone involved in the process.TQM is a long term process and adopts strategic dimension. The aims of TQM are to achieve customer satisfaction, cost effectiveness, and defect free work through a relentless pursuit of the “war on waste. Customer satisfaction is achieved through focusing on process improvement, customer and supplier involvement, teamwork, training, and education. This paper aim to evaluate the level of effectiveness of application of Total Quality Management principle, materials provided by supplier at S. J. Contracts Pvt. Ltd. Company. A qualitative research approach is adopted in this study, where the questionnaire is distributed to supplier. To stay competitive in today’s market and maintain the quality of material is most important factor, so need to identify the level of quality practices in organization. Analyzed material quality by TQM application whether they follow the rules of total quality management or not, by maintaining the quality of materials, we achieved the quality of deliverables, therefore using the total quality management rules. For Further analysis, laboratory test on materials likes fly ash brick, steel, RMC are conducted. Materials are analyzed by using tools such as six sigma and benchmarking. Fly ash bricks analysis is carried and following results are obtained. The fly ash brick length is within expected benchmarked variation. The brick length is at 2 sigma performance. Considering Zero defect as the ultimate goal, then defect length is 25%. Material suppliers needs to more focus on the manufacturing process and quality of materials
