    Anisotropic susceptibility of ferromagnetic ultrathin Co films on vicinal Cu

    We measure the magnetic susceptibility of ultrathin Co films with an in-plane uniaxial magnetic anisotropy grown on a vicinal Cu substrate. Above the Curie temperature the influence of the magnetic anisotropy can be investigated by means of the parallel and transverse susceptibilities along the easy and hard axes. By comparison with a theoretical analysis of the susceptibilities we determine the isotropic exchange interaction and the magnetic anisotropy. These calculations are performed in the framework of a Heisenberg model by means of a many-body Green's function method, since collective magnetic excitations are very important in two-dimensional magnets.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figure

    Magnetic properties of quantum Heisenberg ferromagnets with long-range interactions

    Quantum Heisenberg ferromagnets with long-range interactions decayin as 1/rp1/r^p in one and two dimensions are investigated by means of the Green's function method. It is shown that there exists a finite-temperature phase transition in the region d<p<2dd<p<2 d for the dd-dimensional case and that no transitions at any finite temperature exist for p2dp\ge 2 d; the critical temperature is also estimated. We study the magnetic properties of this model. We calculate the critical exponents' dependence on pp; these exponents also satisfy a scaling relation. Some of the results were also found using the modified spin-wave theory and are in remarkable agreement with each other.Comment: 13 pages(LaTeX REVTeX), 2 figures not included (postscript files available on request), submitted to Phys.Rev.

    AUTOIMMUNE ORIGIN OF SARCOIDOSIS: DETERMINATION OF SPECIFIC IMMUNE COMPLEXES IN PATIENTS WITH RESPIRATORY SARCOIDOSIS

    The etiology of sarcoidosis is not completely understood. A hypothesis exists about the relationship between sarcoidosis and a complex of pathological autoimmune reactions that occur under the influence of triggering factors. In this study, specific immune complexes in the blood plasma of patients have been determined, which can indirectly reveal the causes of the disease.The study included 33 patients with lung sarcoidosis (I group), compared to 24 healthy donors who served as a control group (II group). The patients underwent standard examination. Their blood plasma was investigated by the dynamic light scattering method with addition of tuberculosis antigens (ESAT-6/SFP-10) and “lung healthy tissue extract”. Statistical analysis was performed using the Statistica 7.0 program. Test results were considered significant at p &lt; 0.05.Аccording to the data obtained, addition of ESAT-6/SFP-10 to patient’s blood plasma almost did not lead to the formation of immune complexes in most samples. Meanwhile, development of such complexes after addition of “lung tissue extract” was revealed in all the patients. The immune complexes were not detected in any donor from control group after stimulation with both kinds of antigens (p &lt; 0.01).The data on distinct formation of immune complexes with the addition of “lung healthy tissue extract” in patients with lung sarcoidosis may be considered an indirect evidence for occurrence of autoimmune reaction under the influence of some pathogenic factors. Absence of de novo immune complex formation after addition of tuberculosis antigens (ESAT-6/SFP-10) makes it unlikely any direct effects of tuberculosis bacteria upon development of sarcoidosis

    Upconversion Luminescence of Er3+ Ions from Barium Titanate Xerogel Powder and Target Fabricated by Explosive Compaction Method

    Photo- and cathodoluminescence in the visible range from erbium-doped barium titanate xerogels obtained in the form of a powder and a target pressed from it by explosive compaction are investigated. The powder and target exhibit upconversion luminescence of erbium ions excited at wavelengths in the regions 950–1000 and 1450–1550 nm that is characterized by strong bands at 650 and 520–560 nm and a weak band at ~820 nm that correspond to the 4F9/2 → 4I15/2, 2H11/2 → 4I15/2, 4S3/2 → 4I15/2, and 4I9/2 → 4I15/2 transitions of Er3+. The target also demonstrates cathodoluminescence at room temperature and liquid nitrogen temperature with the strongest bands at 650, 520, and 538 nm

    Optical Properties and Upconversion Luminescence of BaTiO3 Xerogel Structures Doped with Erbium and Ytterbium

    Erbium upconversion (UC) photoluminescence (PL) from sol-gel derived barium titanate (BaTiO3:Er) xerogel structures fabricated on silicon, glass or fused silica substrates has been studied. The fabricated structures under continuous-wave excitation at 980 nm and nanosecond laser excitation at 980 and 1540 nm demonstrate room temperature PL with the bands at 410, 523, 546, 658, 800 and 830 nm, which correspond to the 2H9/2 → 4I15/2, 2H11/2 → 4I15/2, 4S3/2 → 4I15/2, 4F9/2→ 4I15/2 and 4I9/2→ 4I15/2 transitions in Er3+ ions. The intensity of erbium UС PL increases when an additional macroporous layer of strontium titanate is used beneath the BaTiO3 xerogel layer. It is enhanced for BaTiO3 xerogel films codoped with erbium and ytterbium (BaTiO3:Er,Yb). The redistribution of the intensity of the PL bands is observed for the latter and it depends on the excitation conditions. Finally, a Bragg reflector and a microcavity structure comprising of alternating (BaTiO3:Er,Yb) and SiO2 xerogel layers were fabricated with the cavity mode near the red PL band of Er3+ ions. Enhancement of UC PL from the microcavity was observed for the sample annealed from 450°C to 600°C. The fabricated cavity structures annealed at 450°C allow us to tune the cavity mode with 10 nm shift within the temperature range from +20°C to +130°C.     Bias in MRI Measurements of Apparent Diffusion Coefficient and Kurtosis: Implications for Choice of Maximum Diffusion Encoding

    Tissue water diffusion is non-Gaussian and the expressions used to calculate diffusion parameters are approximations which introduce systematic errors dependent on the maximum diffusion encoding, diffusion time, etc. This study aimed at characterizing biases in estimates of both apparent diffusion coefficient and kurtosis, and determines their dependence on these parameters. Similar to the approach of several previous studies, Taylor expansion of the diffusion signal was used to calculate biases. Predicted errors were compared with data from one volunteer. Predicted errors agreed well with the measured errors and also the published diffusion tensor imaging measurements. The equations derived predict biases in measured diffusion parameters and explain much of the discrepancy between measurements obtained with different acquisition protocols. The equations may also be used to choose appropriate diffusion encoding for diffusion weighted, tensor, and kurtosis imaging
