MicroRNAs, an active and versatile group in cancers

    Get PDF
microRNAs (miRNAs) are a class of non-coding RNAs that function as endogenous triggers of the RNA interference pathway. Studies have shown that thousands of human protein-coding genes are regulated by miRNAs, indicating that miRNAs are master regulators of many important biological processes, such as cancer development. miRNAs frequently have deregulated expression in many types of human cancers, and play critical roles in tumorigenesis, which functions either as tumor suppressors or as oncogenes. Recent studies have shown that miRNAs are highly related with cancer progression, including initiating, growth, apoptosis, invasion, and metastasis. Furthermore, miRNAs are shown to be responsible for the cancer-related inflammation, anti-cancer drug resistance, and regulation of cancer stem cells. Therefore, miRNAs have generated great interest as a novel strategy in cancer diagnosis and therapy. Here we review the versatile roles of miRNAs in cancers and their potential applications for diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment as biomarkers

In the title mononuclear complex, [Zn(C7H6N5)2(H2O)2], the ZnII atom, located on an inversion centre, is in a distorted octahedral coordination geometry formed by four N atoms from two chelating 5-(2-pyridylmethyl)tetrazolate ligands and two O donors from two water molecules. Intermolecular O—H⋯N hydrogen bonds between the coordinated water molecule and the tetrazolyl group of the 5-(2-pyridylmethyl)tetrazolate ligand lead to the formation of a three-dimensional network

AbstractObjectiveTo explore mechanism and protective effect of rosiglitazone on myocardial ischemia reperfusion (I/R) injury.MethodsA total of 48 male Japanese white big-ear rabbits were randomly divided into control group (A), I/R group (B), low dose of rosiglitazone group (C), high dose of rosiglitazone group (D). Plasma concentration of and also reduced the concentration of plasma serum creatine kinase (CK), CK-MB, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP), ultra-superoxide dismutase (SOD), malondialdehyde (MDA), lactic acid glutathione skin peroxidase (GSH-PX), nitric oxide (NO) and endothelin (ET) were measured 1 h later after I/R. Twenty-four hours after I/R the hearts were harvested for pathological and ultrastructural analysis. Area of myocardial infarction were tested.ResultsPlasma concentration of CK, CK-MB, hsCRP, NO, MDA and ET were decreased in C, D group compared with group B. Plasma concentration of T-SOD and GSH-Px were increased significantly in C, D group compared with group B. Compared with group B, pathological and ultrastructural changes in C and D group were slightly. There was significant difference in myocardial infarction area between group C, D and group B (P<0.05). Myocardial infarction area and arrhythmia rate were lower in group C, D compare with group B.ConclusionsRosiglitazone may protect myocardium from I/R injury by enhancing T-SOD and GSH-Px concentration, inhibit inflammatory reaction, and improve endothelial function

SummaryObjectiveBurkitt's lymphoma (BL) occurs mostly in children; bilateral ovarian involvement mimicking a gynecologic malignancy in adults is extremely rare. Here, we report a patient with BL mimicking a gynecologic tumorCase ReportA 50-year-old Taiwanese woman presented with the complaint of persistent lower abdominal distension with dull pain, easy satiety, and progressively increasing abdominal girth for 2 weeks. Amenorrhea was also noted for about 2 months, and her review of systems was negative for the common “B” symptoms associated with lymphoma. At our hospital, imaging studies revealed a huge pelvic mass (10.8 ×8.7 cm), suggesting a large subserous myoma or an ovarian tumor. Under the impression of pelvic mass, she underwent exploratory laparotomy. Primary ovarian sex-cord malignancy with cecum involvement was impressed by the primitive intraoperative frozen section report. Subsequently, an optimal cytoreductive operation with right hemicolectomy was performed. However, final histopathologic report was an extranodal multifocal BL.ConclusionAlthough extranodal BL in ovaries is a rare condition, it should be noted in the differential diagnosis of pelvic gynecologic malignancies

AIM:To investigate the effectiveness of three cycloplegia drugs: atropine, cyclopentolate and tropicamide on school-age children, and provid theoretical basis in choosing cycloplegic drugs for school-age children. METHODS: Totally 420 myopic school-age students(818 eyes)in out-patients department were selected during July to August 2017. Candidates were divided into three medicine groups according to their age: Group A: 12 years old, utilizing the tropicamide. The difference of refraction degree before and after medicine application were calculated. RESULTS: The coincidence rate of spherical equivalent refraction with cycloplegia and without cycloplegia was 81.0% in atropine group, 81.3% in cyclopentolate group and 79.4% in tropicamide group respectively. There was statistical difference of refraction results of the Group A between with atropine cycloplegia and without cycloplegia. The mean difference was -0.113±0.226D(t=-4.663, Pt=-1.665, P=0.099). So does the difference of Group C between with tropicamide cycloplegia and without cycloplegia, which was -0.026±0.193D(t=1.760, P=0.080). CONCLUSION: For children older than 8-years old and without strabismus and amblyopia, cyclopentolate or tropicamide can be used to give cycloplegia refraction for the first time, which is convenient for their daily activities. The cycloplegia refraction results should been re-checked after used atropine, and giving prescription by using the principle of maximum plus to maximum visual acuity(MPMVA)

Coupling soft bodies and dynamic motions with multifunctional flexible electronics is challenging, but is essential in satisfying the urgent and soaring demands of fully soft and comprehensive robotic systems that can perform tasks in spite of rigorous spatial constraints. Here, the mobility and adaptability of liquid droplets with the functionality of flexible electronics, and techniques to use droplets as carriers for flexible devices are combined. The resulting active droplets (ADs) with volumes ranging from 150 to 600 µL can conduct programmable functions, such as sensing, actuation, and energy harvesting defined by the carried flexible devices and move under the excitation of gravitational force or magnetic force. They work in both dry and wet environments, and adapt to the surrounding environment through reversible shape shifting. These ADs can achieve controllable motions at a maximum velocity of 226 cm min−1 on a dry surface and 32 cm min-1 in a liquid environment. The conceptual system may eventually lead to individually addressable ADs that offer sophisticated functions for high-throughput molecule analysis, drug assessment, chemical synthesis, and information collection
