The association between TAPSE and right atrial contractile strain

BACKGROUND: In the descending arm of tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (TAPSE) there is a notch formation which corresponds to the contractile phase of the atrial strain curve. Theoretically, this notch formation stands for atrial contraction. AIMS: We aim to characterize the notch formation on the TAPSE, the predictors of its existence, its relationship with the right ventricle and right atrial strain (RAS) parameters. METHODS: Retrospectively selected 240 patients were investigated for the determinants of the notch formation on TAPSE and the relation between RAS and TAPSE. RAS was analyzed using 2D speckle tracking in a dedicated mode for atrial analysis and reported separately for the reservoir, conduit, and contractile phases. RESULTS: 71.7% (n = 172) of patients had the notch formation on the TAPSE and 70.4% (n = 169) had a normal value of right atrial contractile strain (RASct). Most of the patients with a notch formation also had preserved RASct (95.9%; P <0.001). In multivariable analysis, RASct (odds ratio [OR], 1.45; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.13‒1.77; P = 0.020) remained significant with the notch formation. Receiver operator characteristic (ROC) analysis demonstrated that a RASct of ‒19% was found as a cut-off for presence of notch formation. ROC area was 0.897 (95% CI 0.844–0.951; P <0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The changes in TAPSE configuration represents the changes in atrial contractile phase. The descending arm of the TAPSE indicates the RASct as whether it is preserved or not. The notch formation persists if the RASct is above ‒19%. So, an easier, more applicable, and more effortless tool TAPSE can be used as an indicator of atrial contractile phase by its configuration in daily routine

Objective:To investigate the prevalence of tonsillar human papillomavirus infection in İstanbul, the most populous city of Turkey. Methods:Tonsil specimens were obtained from 206 cadavers aged 18 to 89 years. Tonsillectomy was performed during routine autopsy for each subject in the 24 hours after death. After dissolution, tissues were processed with the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method to identify HPV DNA. The data obtained from the DNA sequencer were processed in the database of GenBank®.Results:One hundred sixty-six (80.6%) male and 40 (19.4%) female cadavers were included in the study. One case demonstrated HPV-16, one had HPV-82, one had HPV-55 and one had HPV-13. All four cases were male. Prevalence of tonsillar HPV was 1.94% and of HPV 16 was 0.48%.Conclusion:The prevalence of tonsillar HPV infection was found 1.94% and of HPV 16 0.48% in our study

Objective: Percutaneous endovascular interventions has become an effective treatment in supra popliteal atherosclerotic disease. However there is stil no gold standart treatment in infrapopliteal atherosclerotic disease with critical limb ischemia. In this study we aimed to present the outcomes of patients with critical limb ischemia underwent percutaneous transluminal balloon angioplasty. Material and Method: We included 67 patients (mean age 62.4, 82% male). Procedural success was defined as <20% residual vessel stenosis. Clinical success was defined as the relieve of rest pain, prevention of amputation and achievement of wound healing. Results: Procedural success was achieved in 92.5%. Clinical success was achieved in 92.5%, 89.5% and 85.0% in 1.3 and 12 months fol- low-up, respectively. There were no procedure related death, acute thrombosis, distal embolization or need for urgent surgical inter- vention. Conclusion: Our results show that percutaneous balon angioplasty procedure has with low complication and high success rates in pa- tients with critical limb ischemia

Intuition and emotional intelligence: A study in nursing students

This study was designed to determine the relationship between the ability of nursing students to use intuition in nursing care and their emotional intelligence levels. The population of this descriptive and cross-sectional research consisted of students who were studying at a Nursing Faculty of a university, and the sampling consisted of 295 students who were determined by the stratified random sampling method. Data were collected using the Student Information Form, The Use of Intuition by Nursing Students Scale (UINSS), and the Emotional Intelligence Level Assessment Scale (EILAS). It was observed that the level of emotional intelligence was at a normal level, although the ability to use intuition was low in nursing students. There was a positive relation between intuition usage and emotional intelligence sub-scales. It was determined that the use of intuition, emotional awareness, being aware of emotions, and empathy skills of female students were high compared to male students, and that the emotional intelligence scores of those who voluntarily chose the profession were higher
