Coupling between planes and chains in YBa2Cu3O7 : a possible solution for the order parameter controversy
We propose to explain the contradictory experimental evidence about the
symmetry of the order parameter in by taking into account
the coupling between planes and chains. This leads to an anticrossing of the
plane and chain band. We include an attractive pairing interaction within the
planes and a repulsive one between planes and chains, leading to opposite signs
for the order parameter on planes and chains, and to nodes of the gap because
of the anticrossing. Our model blends s-wave and d-wave features, and provides
a natural explanation for all the contradictory experimentsComment: 13 pages, revtex, 2 uucoded figure
A Survey of Finite Algebraic Geometrical Structures Underlying Mutually Unbiased Quantum Measurements
The basic methods of constructing the sets of mutually unbiased bases in the
Hilbert space of an arbitrary finite dimension are discussed and an emerging
link between them is outlined. It is shown that these methods employ a wide
range of important mathematical concepts like, e.g., Fourier transforms, Galois
fields and rings, finite and related projective geometries, and entanglement,
to mention a few. Some applications of the theory to quantum information tasks
are also mentioned.Comment: 20 pages, 1 figure to appear in Foundations of Physics, Nov. 2006 two

Microwave and terahertz dielectric properties of MgTiO3–CaTiO3 ceramics
The THz dielectric properties of MgTiO3–CaTiO3 ceramics are reported. The ceramics were prepared via a solid-state reaction route and the sintering conditions were optimized to obtain ceramics with high permittivity and low loss in the terahertz frequency domain. The amount of impurities (MgTi2O5) and grain size increased with increasing sintering temperature. The dielectric properties improved with increasing density, and the best terahertz dielectric performance was obtained at 1260 °C, with a permittivity of 17.73 and loss of 3.07×10−3. Ceramics sintered above 1260 °C showed a sharp increase in loss, which is ascribed to an increase in the impurity content
Structure of Schlafen13 reveals a new class of tRNA/rRNA- targeting RNase engaged in translational control
Cleavage of transfer (t)RNA and ribosomal (r)RNA are critical and conserved steps of translational control for cells to overcome varied environmental stresses. However, enzymes that are responsible for this event have not been fully identified in high eukaryotes. Here, we report a mammalian tRNA/rRNA-targeting endoribonuclease: SLFN13, a member of the Schlafen family. Structural study reveals a unique pseudo-dimeric U-pillow-shaped architecture of the SLFN13 N'-domain that may clamp base-paired RNAs. SLFN13 is able to digest tRNAs and rRNAs in vitro, and the endonucleolytic cleavage dissevers 11 nucleotides from the 3'-terminus of tRNA at the acceptor stem. The cytoplasmically localised SLFN13 inhibits protein synthesis in 293T cells. Moreover, SLFN13 restricts HIV replication in a nucleolytic activity-dependent manner. According to these observations, we term SLFN13 RNase S13. Our study provides insights into the modulation of translational machinery in high eukaryotes, and sheds light on the functional mechanisms of the Schlafen family
Antipsychotic drug use in pregnancy: A multinational study from ten countries
Aim: To compare the prevalence and trends of antipsychotic drug use during pregnancy between countries across
four continents.
Methods: Individually linked health data in Denmark (2000−2012), Finland (2005–2014), Iceland (2004–2017),
Norway (2005–2015), Sweden (2006–2015), Germany (2006–2015), Australia (New South Wales, 2004–2012),
Hong Kong (2001–2015), UK (2006–2016), and the US (Medicaid, 2000–2013, and IBM MarketScan, 2012–2015)
were used. Using a uniformed approach, we estimated the prevalence of antipsychotic use as the proportion of
pregnancies where a woman filled at least one antipsychotic prescription within three months before pregnancy
until birth. For the Nordic countries, data were meta-analyzed to investigate maternal characteristics associated
with the use of antipsychotics.
Results: We included 8,394,343 pregnancies. Typical antipsychotic use was highest in the UK (4.4%) whereas
atypical antipsychotic use was highest in the US Medicaid (1.5%). Atypical antipsychotic use increased over
time in most populations, reaching 2% in Australia (2012) and US Medicaid (2013). In most countries,
prochlorperazine was the most commonly used typical antipsychotic and quetiapine the most commonly used
atypical antipsychotic. Use of antipsychotics decreased across the trimesters of pregnancy in all populations except Finland. Antipsychotic use was elevated among smokers and those with parity ≥4 in the Nordic countries.
Conclusion: Antipsychotic use during pregnancy varied considerably between populations, partly explained by
varying use of the typical antipsychotic prochlorperazine, which is often used for nausea and vomiting in early
pregnancy. Increasing usage of atypical antipsychotics among pregnant women reflects the pattern that was previously reported for the general population
Optical properties of MgH2 measured in situ in a novel gas cell for ellipsometry/spectrophotometry
The dielectric properties of alpha-MgH2 are investigated in the photon energy
range between 1 and 6.5 eV. For this purpose, a novel sample configuration and
experimental setup are developed that allow both optical transmission and
ellipsometric measurements of a transparent thin film in equilibrium with
hydrogen. We show that alpha-MgH2 is a transparent, colour neutral insulator
with a band gap of 5.6 +/- 0.1 eV. It has an intrinsic transparency of about
80% over the whole visible spectrum. The dielectric function found in this work
confirms very recent band structure calculations using the GW approximation by
Alford and Chou [J.A. Alford and M.Y. Chou (unpublished)]. As Pd is used as a
cap layer we report also the optical properties of PdHx thin films.Comment: REVTeX4, 15 pages, 12 figures, 5 table
IL-21/type I interferon interplay regulates neutrophil-dependent innate immune responses to Staphylococcus aureus
Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a major hospital- and communityacquired pathogen, but the mechanisms underlying host-defense to MRSA remain poorly
understood. Here, we investigated the role of IL-21 in this process. When administered intratracheally into wild-type mice, IL-21 induced granzymes and augmented clearance of pulmonary
MRSA but not when neutrophils were depleted or a granzyme B inhibitor was added.
Correspondingly, IL-21 induced MRSA killing by human peripheral blood neutrophils.
Unexpectedly, however, basal MRSA clearance was also enhanced when IL-21 signaling was
blocked, both in Il21r KO mice and in wild-type mice injected with IL-21R-Fc fusion-protein. This
correlated with increased type I interferon and an IFN-related gene signature, and indeed antiIFNAR1 treatment diminished MRSA clearance in these animals. Moreover, we found that IFNb
induced granzyme B and promoted MRSA clearance in a granzyme B-dependent fashion. These
results reveal an interplay between IL-21 and type I IFN in the innate immune response to MRS
