Thyroid function was assessed using thyrotropic hormone and free-thyroxine as well as routine use of thyroid hormones or antithyroid medications. Cases of dementia were assessed using a harmonized one-phase dementia diagnostic procedure by the "10/66 Dementia Research Group" including Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia. Logistic regression models were used to test a possible association between subclinical hyperthyroidism and dementia.

Results and discussion

Prevalence of dementia and of subclinical hyperthyroidism were respectively of 4.4% and 3.0%. After age adjustment, we found an association of subclinical hyperthyroidism and any type of dementia and vascular dementia (Odds Ratio, 4.1, 95% Confidence Interval [95% CI] 1.3-13.1, and 5.3 95% CI, 1.1-26.4; respectively). Analyzing data by gender, we found an association of subclinical hyperthyroidism with dementia and Alzheimer's disease only for men (OR, 8.0; 95% CI, 1.5-43.4; OR, 12.4; 95% CI, 1.2-128.4; respectively). No women with subclinical hypothyroidism presented Alzheimer's disease in the sample.

Conclusion

The results suggest a consistent association among people with subclinical hyperthyroidism and dementia.</p

ABSTRACT This work describes and comments on articles in the area of Public Health Nutrition published in Revista de Saúde Pública (RSP – Public Health Journal) from 1967 to 2016. We searched in the PubMed database restricted to the periodical “Revista de Saúde Pública” and using terms related to key topics in the area of Public Health Nutrition. We retrieved 742 articles and, after exclusion of duplicates and articles unrelated to the subject, we analyzed 441 articles, grouped according to subject: dental caries, anemia, hypovitaminosis A, macro/micronutrients, malnutrition, nutritional assessment, overweight/obesity, food consumption, low birthweight, and breastfeeding. We observed significant increase in the number of articles published and diversification of subjects addressed over the 50 years, representing the consistent development of the scientific field of Nutrition in Brazil. Since its inception, RSP has played an important role in the dissemination of knowledge about the main nutritional issues in Brazil

RESULTADOS: Os resultados dos exames anátomo-patológicos dos pacientes revelaram: a) adenoma folicular 155 (9,63%); b) outros adenomas 29 (1,8%); c) bócio adenomatoso 87 (5,4%); d) bócio colóide 981 (60,9%); e) carcinoma folicular 36 (2,24%); f) carcinoma indiferenciado 3 (0,19%); g) carcinoma papilífero 93 (5,78%); h) cistos 9 (0,56%); i) bócio difuso tóxico 75 (4,66%); j) outras tireoidites 12 (0,75%); l) outras neoplasias malignas 6 (0,38%) e m) tireoidite linfocítica 124 (7,71%).

OBJECTIVE: This study assessed patients' acceptance of hospital foods in a public hospital located in Florianópolis, Santa Catarina, Brazil. METHODS: The leftover-ingestion index was used to analyze the volume of leftovers of hospitalized patients during 15 days. The index was determined by diet type: normal, special with salt and special without salt. Satisfaction questionnaires were administered to the patients and the factors that influence food acceptance were assessed. RESULTS: The total weight of 1,877 meals was 868kg and the weight of the leftovers was 313kg, thus a leftover-ingestion index of 36.09%. The percentage of leftovers of the special diets with salt, normal diets and special diets without salt were 53.68%, 33.99% and 33.84%, respectively. The patients were satisfied with the variety, amount and presentation of the meals but complained about the temperature and seasonings, with ratings of 43.00% and 34.30%, respectively. The leftover-ingestion index (36.09%) was above the acceptable index (20.00%) for a diseased population, indicating a considerable waste of food. CONCLUSION: The results show that it is necessary to assess the meal production processes and develop strategies that encourage the patients to eat
