    Association of two apolipoprotein A-I gene MspI polymorphisms with high density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol levels and indices of obesity in selected healthy Chinese subjects and in patients with early-onset type 2 diabetes

    OBJECTIVE: Previous studies have reported associations between two apolipoprotein A-I (apoA-I) gene MspI polymorphisms (G-75A and C83T) and high density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol and/or apoA-I levels, but have not investigated the relationship with obesity. METHODS: We determined the distribution of these polymorphisms in 482 early-onset (< or = 40 years) Type 2 Chinese diabetics and 167 Chinese selected healthy controls. RESULTS: The -75A and 83T allele frequencies were similar in the diabetic and healthy subjects. In the healthy control subjects, HDL-cholesterol levels were significantly higher in the AA homozygotes than in the GG/GA carriers (1.74 +/- 0.58 vs. 1.45 +/- 0.58 mmol/l, P<0.001). Furthermore, analyses showed a significant relationship between increasing HDL-cholesterol tertiles and the AA genotype frequency in the selected healthy subjects (3.6, 8.9 and 16.1%, P=0.026). For the C83T polymorphism, healthy male CT carriers had higher HDL-cholesterol levels than CC homozygotes (1.71 +/- 0.57 vs. 1.25 +/- 0.30 mmol/l, P=0.001), but this was not found in females. No relationship between these polymorphisms and lipid levels was found in the diabetics, who had a more adverse lipid profile than the selected controls. In the diabetics, but not the controls, in CT carriers compared to CC homozygotes there were lower levels of body mass index (BMI; 23.8 +/- 3.9 vs. 25.4 +/- 4.7 kg/m2, P=0.048) and waist-to-height ratio (0.49 +/- 0.06 vs. 0.52 +/- 0.07, P=0.023), and this relationship was supported by tertile analysis. CONCLUSIONS: The -75AA genotype was associated with higher HDL-cholesterol levels in the selected healthy, but not diabetic, subjects. The 83T allele was associated with greater indices of obesity in the diabetic patients, and with higher HDL-cholesterol in heterozygous healthy male subjects.postprin

    An SU(N) Mott insulator of an atomic Fermi gas realized by large-spin Pomeranchuk cooling

    The Hubbard model, containing only the minimum ingredients of nearest neighbor hopping and on-site interaction for correlated electrons, has succeeded in accounting for diverse phenomena observed in solid-state materials. One of the interesting extensions is to enlarge its spin symmetry to SU(N>2), which is closely related to systems with orbital degeneracy. Here we report a successful formation of the SU(6) symmetric Mott insulator state with an atomic Fermi gas of ytterbium (173Yb) in a three-dimensional optical lattice. Besides the suppression of compressibility and the existence of charge excitation gap which characterize a Mott insulating phase, we reveal an important difference between the cases of SU(6) and SU(2) in the achievable temperature as the consequence of different entropy carried by an isolated spin. This is analogous to Pomeranchuk cooling in solid 3He and will be helpful for investigating exotic quantum phases of SU(N) Hubbard system at extremely low temperatures.Comment: 20 pages, 6 figures, to appear in Nature Physic

    Molecular cloning and transcriptional activity of a new Petunia calreticulin gene involved in pistil transmitting tract maturation, progamic phase, and double fertilization

    Calreticulin (CRT) is a highly conserved and ubiquitously expressed Ca2+-binding protein in multicellular eukaryotes. As an endoplasmic reticulum-resident protein, CRT plays a key role in many cellular processes including Ca2+ storage and release, protein synthesis, and molecular chaperoning in both animals and plants. CRT has long been suggested to play a role in plant sexual reproduction. To begin to address this possibility, we cloned and characterized the full-length cDNA of a new CRT gene (PhCRT) from Petunia. The deduced amino acid sequence of PhCRT shares homology with other known plant CRTs, and phylogenetic analysis indicates that the PhCRT cDNA clone belongs to the CRT1/CRT2 subclass. Northern blot analysis and fluorescent in situ hybridization were used to assess PhCRT gene expression in different parts of the pistil before pollination, during subsequent stages of the progamic phase, and at fertilization. The highest level of PhCRT mRNA was detected in the stigma–style part of the unpollinated pistil 1 day before anthesis and during the early stage of the progamic phase, when pollen is germinated and tubes outgrow on the stigma. In the ovary, PhCRT mRNA was most abundant after pollination and reached maximum at the late stage of the progamic phase, when pollen tubes grow into the ovules and fertilization occurs. PhCRT mRNA transcripts were seen to accumulate predominantly in transmitting tract cells of maturing and receptive stigma, in germinated pollen/growing tubes, and at the micropylar region of the ovule, where the female gametophyte is located. From these results, we suggest that PhCRT gene expression is up-regulated during secretory activity of the pistil transmitting tract cells, pollen germination and outgrowth of the tubes, and then during gamete fusion and early embryogenesis

    Multistage remediation of heavy metal contaminated river sediments in a mining region based on particle size

    Sediment pollution is an important environmental problem, and the remediation of heavy metal contaminated sediments is crucial to river ecosystem protection, especially in mining regions. In this work, characteristics of heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Cd, As and Hg) were investigated, including contents and fractions based on particle size (PS) in river sediments. Chemical leaching and stabilization for sediment remediation were performed, and the technology feasibility was assessed. The results indicated that the heavy metals were primarily reserved within fine sediments (PS 150 mu m), while the oxidizable fraction, reducible fraction and weak acid extractable fraction dominated the total content in fine sediments, except for that of Hg. Chemical leaching can transform most metals in sediments from large-sized particles to fine particles because the metals are absorbed by fine particles in solution rather than complexation. The stabilization suggested that cement could be an effective agent for ecological risk control for heavy metals. In field engineering, a total of 145,000 m(3) sediment was divided into various sections by PS and synchronously washed by eluting agents. Finally, clean sediments (PS > 150 mu m) were used as building material and clean backfilling; meanwhile, heavily polluted sediments (PS < 150 mu m) were buried as general industrial solid waste after stabilization treatment. Over 90% of the contaminated sediments were reused throughout multistep remediation. Furthermore, a reduction in waste and harm, along with resources, was obtained.     The highly rearranged mitochondrial genomes of the crabs Maja crispata and Maja squinado (Majidae) and gene order evolution in Brachyura

    Abstract We sequenced the mitochondrial genomes of the spider crabs Maja crispata and Maja squinado (Majidae, Brachyura). Both genomes contain the whole set of 37 genes characteristic of Bilaterian genomes, encoded on both \u3b1- and \u3b2-strands. Both species exhibit the same gene order, which is unique among known animal genomes. In particular, all the genes located on the \u3b2-strand form a single block. This gene order was analysed together with the other nine gene orders known for the Brachyura. Our study confirms that the most widespread gene order (BraGO) represents the plesiomorphic condition for Brachyura and was established at the onset of this clade. All other gene orders are the result of transformational pathways originating from BraGO. The different gene orders exhibit variable levels of genes rearrangements, which involve only tRNAs or all types of genes. Local homoplastic arrangements were identified, while complete gene orders remain unique and represent signatures that can have a diagnostic value. Brachyura appear to be a hot-spot of gene order diversity within the phylum Arthropoda. Our analysis, allowed to track, for the first time, the fully evolutionary pathways producing the Brachyuran gene orders. This goal was achieved by coupling sophisticated bioinformatic tools with phylogenetic analysis

    Disparities and risks of sexually transmissible infections among men who have sex with men in China: a meta-analysis and data synthesis.

    BACKGROUND: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including Hepatitis B and C virus, are emerging public health risks in China, especially among men who have sex with men (MSM). This study aims to assess the magnitude and risks of STIs among Chinese MSM. METHODS: Chinese and English peer-reviewed articles were searched in five electronic databases from January 2000 to February 2013. Pooled prevalence estimates for each STI infection were calculated using meta-analysis. Infection risks of STIs in MSM, HIV-positive MSM and male sex workers (MSW) were obtained. This review followed the PRISMA guidelines and was registered in PROSPERO. RESULTS: Eighty-eight articles (11 in English and 77 in Chinese) investigating 35,203 MSM in 28 provinces were included in this review. The prevalence levels of STIs among MSM were 6.3% (95% CI: 3.5-11.0%) for chlamydia, 1.5% (0.7-2.9%) for genital wart, 1.9% (1.3-2.7%) for gonorrhoea, 8.9% (7.8-10.2%) for hepatitis B (HBV), 1.2% (1.0-1.6%) for hepatitis C (HCV), 66.3% (57.4-74.1%) for human papillomavirus (HPV), 10.6% (6.2-17.6%) for herpes simplex virus (HSV-2) and 4.3% (3.2-5.8%) for Ureaplasma urealyticum. HIV-positive MSM have consistently higher odds of all these infections than the broader MSM population. As a subgroup of MSM, MSW were 2.5 (1.4-4.7), 5.7 (2.7-12.3), and 2.2 (1.4-3.7) times more likely to be infected with chlamydia, gonorrhoea and HCV than the broader MSM population, respectively. CONCLUSION: Prevalence levels of STIs among MSW were significantly higher than the broader MSM population. Co-infection of HIV and STIs were prevalent among Chinese MSM. Integration of HIV and STIs healthcare and surveillance systems is essential in providing effective HIV/STIs preventive measures and treatments. TRIAL REGISTRATION: PROSPERO NO: CRD42013003721

    Two-orbital SU(N) magnetism with ultracold alkaline-earth atoms

    Fermionic alkaline-earth atoms have unique properties that make them attractive candidates for the realization of novel atomic clocks and degenerate quantum gases. At the same time, they are attracting considerable theoretical attention in the context of quantum information processing. Here we demonstrate that when such atoms are loaded in optical lattices, they can be used as quantum simulators of unique many-body phenomena. In particular, we show that the decoupling of the nuclear spin from the electronic angular momentum can be used to implement many-body systems with an unprecedented degree of symmetry, characterized by the SU(N) group with N as large as 10. Moreover, the interplay of the nuclear spin with the electronic degree of freedom provided by a stable optically excited state allows for the study of spin-orbital physics. Such systems may provide valuable insights into strongly correlated physics of transition metal oxides, heavy fermion materials, and spin liquid phases.Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures.
