Shear Modulus of a Carbonate Sand–Silt Mixture with THF Hydrate
The maximum shear modulus (Gmax) is an important factor determining soil deformation, and it is closely related to engineering safety and seafloor stability. In this study, a series of bender element tests was carried out to investigate the Gmax of a hydrate-bearing carbonate sand (CS)–silt mixture. The soil mixture adopted a CS:silt ratio of 1:4 by weight to mimic the fine-grained deposit of the South China Sea (SCS). Tetrahydrofuran (THF) was used to form the hydrate. Special specimen preparation procedures were adopted to form THF hydrate inside the intraparticle voids of the CS. The test results indicate that hydrate contributed to a significant part of the skeletal stiffness of the hydrate-bearing CS–silt mixture, and its Gmax at 5% hydrate saturation (Sh) was 4–6 times that of the host soil mixture. Such stiffness enhancement at a low Sh may be related to the cementation hydrate morphology. However, the Gmax of the hydrate-bearing CS–silt mixture was also sensitive to the effective stress for an Sh ranging between 5% and 31%, implying that the frame-supporting hydrate morphology also plays a key role in the skeletal stiffness of the soil mixture. Neither the existing cementation models nor the theoretical frame-supporting (i.e., Biot–Gassmann theory by Lee (BGTL)), could alone provide a satisfactory prediction of the test results. Thus, further theoretical study involving a combination of cementation and frame-supporting models is essential to understand the effects of complicated hydrate morphologies on the stiffness of soil with a substantial amount of intraparticle voids
Costs associated with febrile neutropenia in solid tumor and lymphoma patients - an observational study in Singapore.
BackgroundThe primary objective was to describe the total direct inpatient costs among solid tumor and lymphoma patients with chemotherapy-induced febrile neutropenia (FN) and the factors that were associated with higher direct cost. The secondary objective was to describe the out-of-pocket patient payments and the factors that were associated with higher out-of-pocket patient payments.MethodsThis was a single-center observational study conducted at the largest cancer center in Singapore. All of the adult cancer patients hospitalized due to FN from 2009 to 2012 were studied. The primary outcomes were the total hospital cost and the out-of-pocket patient payments (adjusted by government subsidy) per FN episode. Univariate analysis and multiple linear regression were conducted to identify the factors associated with higher FN costs.ResultsThree hundred and sixty seven adult cancer patients were documented with FN-related hospitalizations. The mean total hospital cost was US3,779-4,607) and the mean out-of-pocket patient payment was US1,976-2,484), per FN episode. The factors associated with a higher total hospital cost were longer length of stay, severe sepsis, and lymphoma as underlying cancer. The out-of-pocket patient payment was positively associated with longer length of stay, severe sepsis, lymphoma diagnosed as underlying cancer, the therapeutic use of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (GCSF), the private ward class, and younger patients.ConclusionsThe total hospital cost and out-of-pocket patient payments of FN management in lymphoma cases were substantial compared with other solid tumors. Factors associated with a higher FN management cost may be useful for developing appropriate strategies to reduce the cost of FN for cancer patients
Isolation and expression of grass carp toll-like receptor 5a (CiTLR5a) and 5b (CiTLR5b) gene involved in the response to flagellin stimulation and grass carp reovirus infection
Toll-like receptor 5 (TLR5), a member of Toll-like receptors (TLRs) family and is responsible for the bacterial flagellin recognition in vertebrates, play an important role in innate immunity. In the study, two TLR5 genes of grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idellus), named CiTLR5a and CiTLR5b, were cloned and analyzed. Both CiTLR5a and CiTLR5b are typical TLR proteins, including LRR motif, transmembrane region and TIR domain. The full-length cDNA of CiTLR5a is 3054 bp long, with a 2646 bp open reading frame (ORF), 78 bp 5' untranslated regions (UTR), and 330 bp 3' UTR. The full-length cDNA of CiTLR5b is 3326 bp, with a 2627 bp ORF, 95 bp 5' UTR, and 594 bp 3' UTR. Phylogenetic analysis showed that CiTLR5a and CiTLR5b were closed to the TLR5 of cirrhinus mrigala, cyprinus_carpio, and danio redo. Subcellular localization indicated that CiTLR5a and CiTLR5b shared similar localization pattern and may locate in the plasma membrane of transfected cells. Real-time quantitative PCR revealed CiTLR5a and CiTLR5b were constitutively expressed in all examined tissues, whereas the highest expressed tissue differed. Following exposure to flagellin and GCRV, CiTLR5a and CiTLR5b were up-regulated significantly. Moreover, the downstream genes of TLR5 signal pathway such as MyD88, NF-kappa B, IRF7, IL-1 beta, and TNF-alpha also up-regulated significantly, whereas the I kappa B gene was down-regulated, suggesting that CiTLR5a and CiTLR5b involved in response to flagellin stimulation and GCRV infection. Observation of a ppb mass threshoud enhancement in \psi^\prime\to\pi^+\pi^-J/\psi(J/\psi\to\gamma p\bar{p}) decay
The decay channel
is studied using a sample of events collected
by the BESIII experiment at BEPCII. A strong enhancement at threshold is
observed in the invariant mass spectrum. The enhancement can be fit
with an -wave Breit-Wigner resonance function with a resulting peak mass of
and a
narrow width that is at the 90% confidence level.
These results are consistent with published BESII results. These mass and width

dominant signal made from interfering with a smaller

Measurement of the Branching Fraction of J/psi --> pi+ pi- pi0
Using 58 million J/psi and 14 million psi' decays obtained by the BESII
experiment, the branching fraction of J/psi --> pi+ pi- pi0 is determined. The
result is (2.10+/-0.12)X10^{-2}, which is significantly higher than previous

Search for K_S K_L in psi'' decays
K_S K_L from psi'' decays is searched for using the psi'' data collected by
BESII at BEPC, the upper limit of the branching fraction is determined to be
B(psi''--> K_S K_L) < 2.1\times 10^{-4} at 90% C. L. The measurement is
compared with the prediction of the S- and D-wave mixing model of the
charmonia, based on the measurements of the branching fractions of J/psi-->K_S

First Measurements of eta_c Decaying into K^+K^-2(pi^+pi^-) and 3(pi^+pi^-)
The decays of eta_c to K^+K^-2(pi^+pi^-) and 3(pi^+pi^-) are observed for the
first time using a sample of 5.8X10^7 J/\psi events collected by the BESII
detector. The product branching fractions are determined to be B(J/\psi-->gamma
eta_c)*B(eta_c-->K^+K^-pi^+pi^-pi^+pi^-)=(1.21+-0.32+-
0.23)X10^{-4}, and (J/\psi-->gamma eta_c)*
B(eta_c-->pi^+pi^-pi^+pi^-pi^+pi^-)= (2.59+-0.32+-0.48)X10^{-4}. The upper
limit for eta_c-->phi pi^+pi^-pi^+pi^- is also obtained as B(J/\psi-->gamma
eta_c)*B(eta_c--> phi pi^+pi^-pi^+pi^-)< 6.03 X10^{-5} at the 90% confidence

First observation of psi(2S)-->K_S K_L
The decay psi(2S)-->K_S K_L is observed for the first time using psi(2S) data
collected with the Beijing Spectrometer (BESII) at the Beijing Electron
Positron Collider (BEPC); the branching ratio is determined to be
B(psi(2S)-->K_S K_L) = (5.24\pm 0.47 \pm 0.48)\times 10^{-5}. Compared with
J/psi-->K_S K_L, the psi(2S) branching ratio is enhanced relative to the
prediction of the perturbative QCD ``12%'' rule. The result, together with the
branching ratios of psi(2S) decays to other pseudoscalar meson pairs
(\pi^+\pi^- and K^+K^-), is used to investigate the relative phase between the

Study of psi(2S) decays to X J/psi
Using J/psi -> mu^+ mu^- decays from a sample of approximately 4 million
psi(2S) events collected with the BESI detector, the branching fractions of
psi(2S) -> eta J/psi, pi^0 pi^0 J/psi, and anything J/psi normalized to that of
psi(2S) -> pi^+ pi^- J/psi are measured. The results are B(psi(2S) -> eta
J/psi)/B(psi(2S) -> pi^+ pi^- J/psi) = 0.098 \pm 0.005 \pm 0.010, B(psi(2S) ->
pi^0 pi^0 J/psi)/B(psi(2S) -> pi^+ pi^- J/psi) = 0.570 \pm 0.009 \pm 0.026, and
B(psi(2S) -> anything J/psi)/B(psi(2S) -> pi^+ pi^- J/psi) = 1.867 \pm 0.026
