Band structures and transport properties of zigzag graphene nanoribbons with antidot arrays
We study the band and transport features of zigzag graphene nanoribbon with an antidot lattice. It is found that an antidot lattice could turn semi-metal graphene into a semiconductor. The size of the band gap can be tuned by the position of the antidots and the distance D between the two nearest antidots. For a finite superlattice with N antidots and a large D, a group of (N - 1) splitting resonant peaks and transmission-blockade regions appear alternately in the conductance spectrum. This indicates the formation of minibands and minigaps. In addition, Fano resonances can be observed when the antidots are localized near one edge of the nanoribbon. These features provide potential applications for graphene-based electronic and optoelectronic devices. © 2010 IOP Publishing Ltd.postprin
Wavelength-multiplexed duplex transceiver based on III-V/Si hybrid integration for off-chip and on-chip optical interconnects
A six-channel wavelength-division-multiplexed optical transceiver with a compact footprint of 1.5 x 0.65 mm(2) for off-chip and on-chip interconnects is demonstrated on a single silicon-on-insulator chip. An arrayed waveguide grating is used as the (de)multiplexer, and III-V electroabsorption sections fabricated by hybrid integration technology are used as both modulators and detectors, which also enable duplex links. The 30-Gb/s capacity for each of the six wavelength channels for the off-chip transceiver is demonstrated. For the on-chip interconnect, an electrical-to-electrical 3-dB bandwidth of 13 GHz and a data rate of 30 Gb/s per wavelength are achieved
The asymptotic near-tip solution for mode-iii crack in steady growth in power hardening media
Two local solutions, one perpendicular and one parallel to the direction of solar gravitational field, are discussed. The influence of gravity on the gas-dynamical process driven by the piston is discussed in terms of characteristic theory, and the flow field is given quantitatively. For a typical piston trajectory similar to the one for an eruptive prominence, the velocity of the shock front which locates ahead the transient front is nearly constant or slightly accelerated, and the width of the compressed flow region may be kept nearly constant or increased linearly, depending on the velocity distribution of the piston. Based on these results, the major features of the transient may be explained. Some of the fine structure of the transient is also shown, which may be compared in detail with observations
Excitation Spectra And Hard-core Thermodynamics Of Bosonic Atoms In Optical Superlattices
A generalized double-well-basis coupled representation is proposed to investigate excitation spectra and thermodynamics of bosonic atoms in double-well optical superlattices. In the hard-core limit and with a filling factor of one, excitations describing the creation of pairs of a doubly occupied state and a simultaneous empty state, and those from a symmetric singly occupied state to an antisymmetric state are carefully analyzed and their excitation spectra are calculated within mean-field theory. Based on the hard-core statistics, the equilibrium properties such as heat capacity and particle populations are studied in detail. The cases with other filling factors are also briefly discussed.published_or_final_versio

A predictive continuum dynamic user-optimal model for a polycentric urban city
A predictive continuum dynamic user-optimal model is extended to investigate the traffic equilibrium problem for a polycentric urban city with multiple central business districts (CBDs). The road network within the city is assumed to be dense and can be viewed as a continuum in which travellers can choose their routes in a two-dimensional space. Travellers are assumed to choose their route to minimise the actual total cost to the destination (i.e. the CBD). The model consists of two parts: the conservation law part and the Hamilton–Jacobi part. The finite volume method is used to solve each part on unstructured meshes. Because the two parts are closely interconnected and have different initial times, solving the model can be treated as a fixed-point problem, which is solved using a self-adaptive method of successive averages. Numerical experiments for an urban city with two CBDs are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the model and the numerical algorithm.postprin
Reflection seismic waveform tomography of physical modelling data
Waveform tomography is commonly tested using numerically generated synthetic seismic data, before the method is applied to field seismic data. However, there are often noticeable differences between idealized synthetic data and real field data, and many factors in the field data, such as noise, irregular source/receiver geometry, affect the inversion solutions. For exploring the potential of reflection seismic waveform tomography, we presented a more realistic test than the synthetic data test, by applying it to physical modelling data, to reconstruct a laboratorial model with complex velocity variation. First, we provided a formulation of the perfectly matched layer absorbing boundary condition, associated with the second-order acoustic wave equation, in order to suppress artificial reflections from subsurface model boundaries in seismic waveform simulation and tomography. Then, we demonstrated the successful implementation of a layer-striping inversion scheme applicable to reflection seismic waveform tomography. Finally, we confirmed the effectiveness of frequency grouping, rather than a single frequency at each iteration, a strategy specifically for the frequency-domain waveform tomography
