Preventing Terrorist Recruitment through Early Intervention by Involving Families

    Get PDF
Preventing terrorist recruitment is one of the most effective and less lethal methods of countering terrorism, and yet it is often overlooked. This article describes a program designed and administered by the author to prevent terrorist recruitment through early intervention, by promoting the involvement of the families of potential recruits in their children's activities and in a counterterrorism program that was developed and implemented in Sanliurfa, Turkey, for four years, from 2010 to 2014. The article details the concept and structure of the program, provides insights on how it was developed and administered, and presents the data, an analysis, and the findings. In addition, this article reports on the outcomes of the program and offers insights into why the youth in Sanliurfa were struggling to break their ties with terrorist organizations

Beating ISIS in the Digital Space: Focus Testing ISIS Defector Counter-Narrative Videos with American College Students

ISIS recruits on a 24/7 basis in over 21 languages over the Internet using videos, memes, tweets and other social media postings and swarming in on anyone that retweets, likes or endorses their materials to try to seduce them into the group.  Their unprecedented social media drive has resulted in over 30,000 foreign fighters from more than 100 countries migrating to Syria and Iraq.  ISIS recruitment in the U.S. is for the most part Internet based and has resulted in the actual and attempted recruitment of over 100 individuals residing in the U.S. with over 200 Americans traveling to Syria to join terrorist groups.  To date very little counter-narrative material exists and most of it is cognitive versus emotionally impactful.  The International Center for the Study of Violent Extremism (ICSVE) Breaking the ISIS Brand – the ISIS Defectors Interviews Project has managed to collect 43 ISIS defector interviews and thus far produce two video clips of ISIS defectors denouncing the group which were focus tested in this research in a small normative college student sample of 75 undergraduate students.  The results demonstrate that American college students find the videos authentic, disturbing and turn them away from ISIS, fulfilling the goals that the project is aiming for in producing counter-narrative materials

Effects of Flexible Splitter Plate in the Wake of a Cylindrical Body

In the wake of the bluff bodies rigid splitter plates are known to control vortex shedding. In this study, the problem of flexible splitter plate in the wake of circular cylinder was investigated using Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) experimentally. In this case; the splitter plate which has a certain amount of modulus of elasticity freely deforms along its length because of the fluid forces on plate. The diameter of cylinder, D was 60 mm while the Reynolds number based on the cylinder diameter is kept constant as 2500, the characteristics length of the control element, L was tested for four different cases that the values of L/D were 0, 1.25, 2.25, 2.5 in the investigation. As a consequence, turbulent kinetic energy, TKE, velocity vector field , vortex, Reynolds stress , root mean square of streamwise and transverse velocities, /U, /U were analyzed. It is found that the variable parameter of L/D affects the flow structures and also noted that it decreased maximum level of all characteristic values

Numerical Analysis of a Two-Phase Flow (Oil and Gas) in a Horizontal Separator used in Petroleum Projects

In the present paper, two-phase three-dimensional turbulent flow simulations are carried out by applying computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technique to the internal flow of a horizontal separator that is used in petroleum industry. Two different geometries are considered; the separator with a straight plate at the top and the separator with the straight plate on the side of the separator. Effects of the location, distance between the inlet of the separator and the diverter plate and inlet velocity on the separation efficiency are investigated by employing the standard k- ε turbulence model. For these purposes, three different distances between the straight diverter plate and the inlet to the separator (0.1 m, 0.15 m and 0.2 m) and four different velocities (0.25 m/s, 0.5 m/s, 0.75 m/s, and 1 m/s) are taken into account by means of Euler mixture model. It is revealed that the maximum separation efficiency is 99.772% when the mixture enters the separator from the top with the inlet velocity of 0.25 m/s and the plate is located 0.2 m away from the inlet section of the separator. An inverse correlation is detected between the inlet velocity and the efficiency of the separation since increasing the inlet velocity decreases the efficiency of the separation

    Unilateral Spinal Anaesthesia in Calves

ΔΕΝ ΔΙΑΤΙΘΕΤΑΙ ΕΡΙΛΗΨΗIn this study, we aimed to evaluate the effects of unilateral anaesthesia by the administration of hyperbaric bupivacaine through the lumbosacral space into the subarachnoid space in calves. A total of 10 calves with unilateral femoral fractures were included in the study. After each calf was placed in a lateral position on the side intended for surgery, 15 mg of hyperbaric bupivacaine was slowly injected into the subarachnoid space. The onset, duration and depth of anaesthesia were determined by the pinprick test (scale 1–4). In addition, heart rate, diastolic arterial blood pressure, systolic arterial blood pressure, mean arterial blood pressure, respiratory rate and body temperature of the calves were monitored and recorded from the onset to 120 min after anaesthesia. The onset of unilateral spinal anaesthesia was within 20 s and the mean duration of anaesthesia was 155.40 min. Although there were statistical differences between hemodynamic values in the study, they were within the reference values. As a result, we believe that unilateral spinal anaesthesia in calves provides adequate anaesthesia for use in orthopaedic procedures; thus, it can be used in practice
