Experimental Test of Quantum Jarzynski Equality with a Trapped Ion System
The past two decades witnessed important developments in the field of
non-equilibrium statistical mechanics. Among these developments, the Jarzynski
equality, being a milestone following the landmark work of Clausius and Kelvin,
stands out. The Jarzynski equality relates the free energy difference between
two equilibrium states and the work done on the system through far from
equilibrium processes. While experimental tests of the equality have been
performed in classical regime, the verification of the quantum Jarzynski
equality has not yet been fully demonstrated due to experimental challenges.
Here, we report an experimental test of the quantum Jarzynski equality with a
single \Yb ion trapped in a harmonic potential. We perform projective
measurements to obtain phonon distributions of the initial thermal state.
Following that we apply the laser induced force on the projected energy
eigenstate, and find transition probabilities to final energy eigenstates after
the work is done. By varying the speed of applying the force from equilibrium
to far-from equilibrium regime, we verified the quantum Jarzynski equality in

Chaotic Control and Generalized Synchronization for a Hyperchaotic Lorenz-Stenflo System
This paper is devoted to investigate the tracking control and generalized
synchronization of the hyperchaotic Lorenz-Stenflo system using the tracking model
and the feedback control scheme. We suppress the chaos to unstable equilibrium via
three feedback methods, and we achieve three globally generalized synchronization
controls. Novel tracking controllers with corresponding parameter update laws are
designed such that the Lorenz-Stenflo systems can be synchronized asymptotically.
Moreover, numerical simulations are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness,
through the contrast between the orbits before being stabilized and the ones after
being stabilized
Anti-E Alloimmunization: A Rare Cause of Severe Fetal Hemolytic Disease Resulting in Pregnancy Loss
We report a case of severe intrauterine hemolysis caused by sole anti-E alloimmunization. A 36-year-old multipara woman presented with hydrops fetalis at 27 weeks of gestation. She had a history of previous neonatal death. In this pregnancy, she was found to have very high titer of anti-E antibody. Ultrasonography detected marked skin edema, cardiomegaly, hepatosplenomegaly, pleural effusion, ascites, placentomegaly, and polyhydramnios. The Doppler peak systolic velocity in the middle cerebral artery was 0.8 m/s, indicating severe fetal anemia. Multiple intrauterine transfusions for the anemic fetus were administered. However, persistent severe fetal anemia and placentomegaly caused poor neonatal death and mirror syndrome in the mother. Uncommon red blood cell alloimmunization has to be watched for early in any population, especially in a woman with a history of unexplained perinatal loss
The analysis of alphaâ 1â antitrypsin glycosylation with direct LCâ MS/MS
A liquid chromatographyâ tandem mass spectrometry (LCâ MS/MS)â based methodology has been developed to differentiate coreâ and antennaryâ fucosylated glycosylation of glycopeptides. Both the glycosylation sites (heterogeneity) and multiple possible glycan occupancy at each site (microheterogeneity) can be resolved via intact glycopeptide analysis. The serum glycoprotein alphaâ 1â antitrypsin (A1AT) which contains both coreâ and antennaryâ fucosylated glycosites was used in this study. Sialidase was used to remove the sialic acids in order to simplify the glycosylation microheterogeneity and to enhance the MS signal of glycopeptides with similar glycan structures. β1â 3,4 galactosidase was used to differentiate coreâ and antennaryâ fucosylation. Inâ source dissociation was found to severely affect the identification and quantification of glycopeptides with low abundance glycan modification. The settings of the mass spectrometer were therefore optimized to minimize the inâ source dissociation. A threeâ step mass spectrometry fragmentation strategy was used for glycopeptide identification, facilitated by pGlyco software annotation and manual checking. The collision energy used for initial glycopeptide fragmentation was found to be crucial for improved detection of oxonium ions and better selection of Y1 ion (peptide+GlcNAc). Structural assignments revealed that all three glycosylation sites of A1AT glycopeptides contain complex Nâ glycan structures: site Asn70 contains biantennary glycans without fucosylation; site Asn107 contains biâ , triâ and tetraâ antennary glycans with both coreâ and antennaryâ fucosylation; site Asn271 contains biâ and triâ antennary glycans with both coreâ and antennaryâ fucosylation. The effect of internal pressure on the tetragonal to monoclinic structural phase transition in ReOFeAs: the case of NdOFeAs
We report the temperature dependent x-ray powder diffraction of the
quaternary compound NdOFeAs (also called NdFeAsO) in the range between 300 K
and 95 K. We have detected the structural phase transition from the tetragonal
phase, with P4/nmm space group, to the orthorhombic or monoclinic phase, with
Cmma or P112/a1 (or P2/c) space group, over a broad temperature range from 150
K to 120 K, centered at T0 ~137 K. Therefore the temperature of this structural
phase transition is strongly reduced, by about ~30K, by increasing the internal
chemical pressure going from LaOFeAs to NdOFeAs. In contrast the
superconducting critical temperature increases from 27 K to 51 K going from
LaOFeAs to NdOFeAs doped samples. This result shows that the normal striped
orthorhombic Cmma phase competes with the superconducting tetragonal phase.
Therefore by controlling the internal chemical pressure in new materials it
should be possible to push toward zero the critical temperature T0 of the
structural phase transition, giving the striped phase, in order to get

Simple sequence repeat-based consensus linkage map of \u3cem\u3eBombyx mori\u3c/em\u3e
We established a genetic linkage map employing 518 simple sequence repeat (SSR, or microsatellite) markers for Bombyx mori (silkworm), the economically and culturally important lepidopteran insect, as part of an international genomics program. A survey of six representative silkworm strains using 2,500 (CA)n- and (CT)n-based SSR markers revealed 17-24% polymorphism, indicating a high degree of homozygosity resulting from a long history of inbreeding. Twenty-nine SSR linkage groups were established in well characterized Dazao and C108 strains based on genotyping of 189 backcross progeny derived from an F1 male mated with a C108 female. The clustering was further focused to 28 groups by genotyping 22 backcross progeny derived from an F1 female mated with a C108 male. This set of SSR linkage groups was further assigned to the 28 chromosomes (established linkage groups) of silkworm aided by visible mutations and cleaved amplified polymorphic sequence markers developed from previously mapped genes, cDNA sequences, and cloned random amplified polymorphic DNAs. By integrating a visible mutation p (plain, larval marking) and 29 well conserved genes of insects onto this SSR-based linkage map, a second generation consensus silkworm genetic map with a range of 7-40 markers per linkage group and a total map length of ≈3431.9 cM was constructed and its high efficiency for genotyping and potential application for synteny studies of Lepidoptera and other insects was demonstrated
Efficacy of Co-administration of Liuwei Dihuang Pills and Ginkgo Biloba Tablets on Albuminuria in Type 2 Diabetes: A 24-Month, Multicenter, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled, Randomized Clinical Trial
Purpose: We investigated the effects of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) on the occurrence and progression of albuminuria in patients with type 2 diabetes.Methods: In this randomized, double-blind, multicenter, controlled trial, we enrolled 600 type 2 diabetes without diabetic nephropathy (DN) or with early-stage DN. Patients were randomly assigned (1:1) to receive Liuwei Dihuang Pills (LWDH) (1.5 g daily) and Ginkgo biloba Tablets (24 mg daily) orally or matching placebos for 24 months. The primary endpoint was the change in urinary albumin/creatinine ratio (UACR) from baseline to 24 months.Results: There were 431 patients having UACR data at baseline and 24 months following-up in both groups. Changes of UACR from baseline to follow-up were not affected in both groups: −1.61(−10.24, 7.17) mg/g in the TCM group and −0.73(−7.47, 6.75) mg/g in the control group. For patients with UACR ≥30 mg/g at baseline, LWDH and Ginkgo biloba significantly reduced the UACR value at 24 months [46.21(34.96, 58.96) vs. 20.78(9.62, 38.85), P < 0.05]. Moreover, the change of UACR from baseline to follow-up in the TCM group was significant higher than that in the control group [−25.50(−42.30, −9.56] vs. −20.61(−36.79, 4.31), P < 0.05].Conclusion: LWDH and Ginkgo biloba may attenuate deterioration of albuminuria in type 2 diabetes patients. These results suggest that TCM is a promising option of renoprotective agents for early stage of DN.Trial registration: The study was registered in the Chinese Clinical Trial Registry. (no. Disparities and risks of sexually transmissible infections among men who have sex with men in China: a meta-analysis and data synthesis.
BACKGROUND: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including Hepatitis B and C virus, are emerging public health risks in China, especially among men who have sex with men (MSM). This study aims to assess the magnitude and risks of STIs among Chinese MSM. METHODS: Chinese and English peer-reviewed articles were searched in five electronic databases from January 2000 to February 2013. Pooled prevalence estimates for each STI infection were calculated using meta-analysis. Infection risks of STIs in MSM, HIV-positive MSM and male sex workers (MSW) were obtained. This review followed the PRISMA guidelines and was registered in PROSPERO. RESULTS: Eighty-eight articles (11 in English and 77 in Chinese) investigating 35,203 MSM in 28 provinces were included in this review. The prevalence levels of STIs among MSM were 6.3% (95% CI: 3.5-11.0%) for chlamydia, 1.5% (0.7-2.9%) for genital wart, 1.9% (1.3-2.7%) for gonorrhoea, 8.9% (7.8-10.2%) for hepatitis B (HBV), 1.2% (1.0-1.6%) for hepatitis C (HCV), 66.3% (57.4-74.1%) for human papillomavirus (HPV), 10.6% (6.2-17.6%) for herpes simplex virus (HSV-2) and 4.3% (3.2-5.8%) for Ureaplasma urealyticum. HIV-positive MSM have consistently higher odds of all these infections than the broader MSM population. As a subgroup of MSM, MSW were 2.5 (1.4-4.7), 5.7 (2.7-12.3), and 2.2 (1.4-3.7) times more likely to be infected with chlamydia, gonorrhoea and HCV than the broader MSM population, respectively. CONCLUSION: Prevalence levels of STIs among MSW were significantly higher than the broader MSM population. Co-infection of HIV and STIs were prevalent among Chinese MSM. Integration of HIV and STIs healthcare and surveillance systems is essential in providing effective HIV/STIs preventive measures and treatments. TRIAL REGISTRATION: PROSPERO NO: CRD42013003721
Prostaglandin I2 Signaling Drives Th17 Differentiation and Exacerbates Experimental Autoimmune Encephalomyelitis
BACKGROUND: Prostaglandin I(2) (PGI(2)), a lipid mediator currently used in treatment of human disease, is a critical regulator of adaptive immune responses. Although PGI(2) signaling suppressed Th1 and Th2 immune responses, the role of PGI(2) in Th17 differentiation is not known. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: In mouse CD4(+)CD62L(+) naïve T cell culture, the PGI(2) analogs iloprost and cicaprost increased IL-17A and IL-22 protein production and Th17 differentiation in vitro. This effect was augmented by IL-23 and was dependent on PGI(2) receptor IP signaling. In mouse bone marrow-derived CD11c(+) dendritic cells (BMDCs), PGI(2) analogs increased the ratio of IL-23/IL-12, which is correlated with increased ability of BMDCs to stimulate naïve T cells for IL-17A production. Moreover, IP knockout mice had delayed onset of a Th17-associated neurological disease, experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), and reduced infiltration of IL-17A-expressing mononuclear cells in the spinal cords compared to wild type mice. These results suggest that PGI(2) promotes in vivo Th17 responses. CONCLUSION: The preferential stimulation of Th17 differentiation by IP signaling may have important clinical implications as PGI(2) and its analogs are commonly used to treat human pulmonary hypertension
