Acoustic and relaxation processes in supercooled o-ter-phenyl by optical-heterodyne transient grating experiment
The dynamics of the fragile glass-forming o-ter-phenyl is investigated by
time-resolved transient grating experiment with an heterodyne detection
technique in a wide temperature range. We investigated the dynamics processes
of this glass-former over more then 6 decades in time with an excellent
signal/noise. Acoustic, structural and thermal relaxations have been clearly
identify and measured in a time-frequency window not covered by previous
spectroscopic investigations. A detailed comparison with the density response
function, calculated on the basis of generalized hydrodynamics model, has been
worked out
Analysis of functional properties of Lactobacillus acidophilus
Metabolites from Lactobacillus acidophilus were analysed. The results showed that Lactobacillus acidophilus Ind-1 and Lactobacillus acidophilus Lakcid produced respectively 12.73 g and 13.33 g lactic acid l¿1 after incubating in skim milk at 37 °C for 36 h; and 2.229 unit and 1.808 unit ß-galactosidase l¿1 in an MRS medium. The proteolytic activity of Lactobacillus acidophilus was high and the content of 17 free amino acids in the fermented milk of Lactobacillus acidophilus Ind-1 and Lactobacillus acidophilus Lakcid was 394.4 mg l¿1 and 563.2 mg l¿1, respectively. Meantime, Lactobacillus acidophilus reduced cholesterol level in an MRS medium supplemented with cholesterol. Furthermore, Lactobacillus acidophilus Ind-1 and Lactobacillus acidophilus Lakcid showed antimicrobial activity against Bacillus anthracis and Escherichia col
Remarks on Hawking radiation as tunneling from the BTZ black holes
Hawking radiation viewed as a semiclassical tunneling process from the event
horizon of the (2 + 1)-dimensional rotating BTZ black hole is carefully
reexamined by taking into account not only the energy conservation but also the
conservation of angular momentum when the effect of the emitted particle's
self-gravitation is incorporated. In contrast to previous analysis of this
issue in the literature, our result obtained here fits well to the
Kraus-Parikh-Wilczek's universal conclusion without any modification to the
Bekenstein-Hawking area-entropy formulae of the BTZ black hole.Comment: 12pages, no figure, use JHEP3.cls. Version better than published one

Analysis of the intraspinal calcium dynamics and its implications on the plasticity of spiking neurons
The influx of calcium ions into the dendritic spines through the
N-metyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) channels is believed to be the primary trigger for
various forms of synaptic plasticity. In this paper, the authors calculate
analytically the mean values of the calcium transients elicited by a spiking
neuron undergoing a simple model of ionic currents and back-propagating action
potentials. The relative variability of these transients, due to the stochastic
nature of synaptic transmission, is further considered using a simple Markov
model of NMDA receptos. One finds that both the mean value and the variability
depend on the timing between pre- and postsynaptic action-potentials. These
results could have implications on the expected form of synaptic-plasticity
curve and can form a basis for a unified theory of spike time-dependent, and
rate based plasticity.Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures. A few changes in section IV and addition of a

Optical properties and radiative forcing of urban aerosols in Nanjing, China
AbstractContinuous measurements of atmospheric aerosols were made in Nanjing, a megacity in China, from 18 January to 18 April, 2011 (Phase 1) and from 22 April 2011 to 21 April 2012 (Phase 2). Aerosol characteristics, optical properties, and direct radiative forcing (DRF) were studied through interpretations of these measurements. We found that during Phase 1, mean PM2.5, black carbon (BC), and aerosol scattering coefficient (Bsp) in Nanjing were 76.1 ± 59.3 μg m−3, 4.1 ± 2.2 μg m−3, and 170.9 ± 105.8 M m−1, respectively. High pollution episodes occurred during Spring and Lantern Festivals when hourly PM2.5 concentrations reached 440 μg m−3, possibly due to significant discharge of fireworks. Temporal variations of PM2.5, BC, and Bsp were similar to each other. It is estimated that inorganic scattering aerosols account for about 49 ± 8.6% of total aerosols while BC only accounted for 6.6 ± 2.9%, and nitrate was larger than sulfate. In Phase 2, optical properties of aerosols show great seasonality. High relative humidity (RH) in summer (June, July, August) likely attributed to large optical depth (AOD) and small Angstrom exponent (AE) of aerosols. Due to dust storms, AE of total aerosols was the smallest in spring (March, April, May). Annual mean 550-nm AOD and 675/440-nm AE were 0.6 ± 0.3 and 1.25 ± 0.29 for total aerosols, 0.04 ± 0.02 and 1.44 ± 0.50 for absorbing aerosols, 0.48 ± 0.29 and 1.64 ± 0.29 for fine aerosols, respectively. Annual single scattering albedo of aerosols ranged from 0.90 to 0.92. Real time wavelength-dependent surface albedo from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) was used to assess aerosol DRFs. Both total and absorbing aerosol DRFs had significant seasonal variations in Nanjing and they were the strongest in summer. Annual mean clear sky TOA DRF (including daytime and nighttime) of total and absorbing aerosols was about −6.9 and +4.5 W m−2, respectively. Aerosol DRFs were found to be sensitive to surface albedo. Over brighter surfaces, solar radiation was more absorbed by absorbing aerosols and less scattered by scattering aerosols
Scaling Distributions of Quarks, Mesons and Proton for all , Energy and Centrality
We present the evidences for the existence of a universal scaling behavior of
the production of at all transverse momenta in heavy-ion collisions at
all centralities and all collision energies. The corresponding scaling behavior
of the quarks is then derived just before the quarks recombine with antiquarks
to form the pions. The degradation effect of the dense medium on the quark
is derived from the scaling distribution. In the recombination model it
is then possible to calculate the distributions of the produced proton
and kaon, which are scaling also. Experimentally verifiable predictions are
made. Implications of the existence of the scaling behavior are discussed.Comment: 10 pages in RevTeX, including 14 figures in eps file
Spatial representation of temporal information through spike timing dependent plasticity
We suggest a mechanism based on spike time dependent plasticity (STDP) of
synapses to store, retrieve and predict temporal sequences. The mechanism is
demonstrated in a model system of simplified integrate-and-fire type neurons
densely connected by STDP synapses. All synapses are modified according to the
so-called normal STDP rule observed in various real biological synapses. After
conditioning through repeated input of a limited number of of temporal
sequences the system is able to complete the temporal sequence upon receiving
the input of a fraction of them. This is an example of effective unsupervised
learning in an biologically realistic system. We investigate the dependence of
learning success on entrainment time, system size and presence of noise.
Possible applications include learning of motor sequences, recognition and
prediction of temporal sensory information in the visual as well as the
auditory system and late processing in the olfactory system of insects.Comment: 13 pages, 14 figures, completely revised and augmented versio
Exact diagonalization of the generalized supersymmetric t-J model with boundaries
We study the generalized supersymmetric model with boundaries in three
different gradings: FFB, BFF and FBF. Starting from the trigonometric R-matrix,
and in the framework of the graded quantum inverse scattering method (QISM), we
solve the eigenvalue problems for the supersymmetric model. A detailed
calculations are presented to obtain the eigenvalues and Bethe ansatz equations
of the supersymmetric model with boundaries in three different
backgrounds.Comment: Latex file, 32 page

Multiple-path Quantum Interference Effects in a Double-Aharonov-Bohm Interferometer
We investigate quantum interference effects in a double-Aharonov-Bohm (AB) interferometer consisting of five quantum dots sandwiched between two metallic electrodes in the case of symmetric dot-electrode couplings by the use of the Green’s function equation of motion method. The analytical expression for the linear conductance at zero temperature is derived to interpret numerical results. A three-peak structure in the linear conductance spectrum may evolve into a double-peak structure, and two Fano dips (zero conductance points) may appear in the quantum system when the energy levels of quantum dots in arms are not aligned with one another. The AB oscillation for the magnetic flux threading the double-AB interferometer is also investigated in this paper. Our results show the period of AB oscillation can be converted from 2π to π by controlling the difference of the magnetic fluxes threading the two quantum rings
