    Effect of Carburizing and Shot Peening on the Microstructure and Surface Properties of 17-CrNi6-Mo Steel

    Carburizing and shot peening are commonly accepted surface treatment methods used to improve the surface properties of materials. Researchers are making attempts to optimize their application for obtaining superior mechanical properties. However, there are few comprehensive reports on this problem. The combination of carburizing and shot peening is used for the surface treatment of 17-CrNi6-Mo steel. This is followed by detailed analysis employing optical and scanning electron microscopy, microhardness testing, surface roughness measurements, and the measurement of residual stresses using X-ray diffraction. The results show that shot peening can further improve the microstructure and surface properties of carburized specimens since it induced the phase transformation of a carburized layer. Moreover, simulation of the phase composition variation curve along with the change in the carbon content and the continuous cooling transformation (CCT) curve of the specimen is also presented. The results are used to elucidate the carburizing effect on a 17-CrNi6-Mo steel surface microstructure.Цементация и дробеструйная обработка общепринятые методы поверхностной обработки, используемые для улучшения поверхностных свойств материалов. Ученые проводят работы в направлении оптимизации их применения с целью обеспечения высоких механических свойств. Однако существует лишь несколько подробных исследований, посвященных их применению. Комбинацию цементации и дробеструйной обработки используют для поверхностной обработки стали 17-CrNi6-Mo. После обработки проводили подробный анализ поверхности материала с использованием оптической и сканирующей электронной микроскопии, измерений ее микротвердости и шероховатости, а также остаточных напряжений с помощью рентгенографии. Результаты показывают, что дробеструйная обработка может дополнительно улучшить микроструктуру и поверхностные свойства науглероженных образцов, поскольку она вызывает фазовое превращение науглероженного слоя. Выполнено моделирование кривой вариации фазового состава с одновременным изменением содержания углерода, а также кривой превращения при непрерывном охлаждении образца. Полученные результаты используются для установления эффекта влияния цементации на микроструктуру поверхности стали 17-CrNi6-Mo

    Semisolid processing characteristics of AM series Mg alloys by rheo-diecasting

    The official published version of this Article can be found at the link below - Copyright @ 2006 ASM InternationalAn investigation has been made into the solidification behavior and microstructural evolution of AM50, AM70, and AM90 alloys during rheo-diecasting, their processibility, and the resulting mechanical properties. It was found that solidification of AM series alloys under intensive melt shearing in the unique twin-screw slurry maker during rheo-diecasting gave rise to numerous spheroidal primary magnesium (Mg) particles that were uniformly present in the microstructure. As a result, the network of the beta-Mg17Al12 phase was consistently interrupted by these spheroidal and ductile particles. Such a microstructure reduced the obstacle of deformation and the harmfulness of the beta-Mg17Al12 network on ductility, and therefore improved the ductility of rheo-diecast AM alloys. It was shown that, even with 9 wt pct Al, the elongation of rheo-diecast AM90 still achieved (9 +/- 1.2) pct. Rheodiecasting thus provides an attractive processing route for upgrading the alloy specification of AM series alloys by increasing the aluminum (Al) content while ensuring ductility. Assessment of the processibility of AM series alloys for semisolid processing showed that high Al content AM series alloys are more suitable for rheo-diecasting than low Al content alloys, because of the lower sensitivity of solid fraction to temperature, the lower liquidus temperature, and the smaller interval between the semisolid processing temperature and the complete solidification temperature.This work is supported by the EPSR

    Dimensional Crossover in the Effective Second Harmonic Generation of Films of Random Dielectrics

    The effective nonlinear response of films of random composites consisting of a binary composite with nonlinear particles randomly embedded in a linear host is theoretically and numerically studied. A theoretical expression for the effective second harmonic generation susceptibility, incorporating the thickness of the film, is obtained by combining a modified effective-medium approximation with the general expression for the effective second harmonic generation susceptibility in a composite. The validity of the thoretical results is tested against results obtained by numerical simulations on random resistor networks. Numerical results are found to be well described by our theory. The result implies that the effective-medium approximation provides a convenient way for the estimation of the nonlinear response in films of random dielectrics.Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures; accepted for publication in Phys.     Production of the PP-Wave Excited BcB_c-States through the Z0Z^0 Boson Decays

    In Ref.[7],we have dealt with the production of the two color-singlet SS-wave (cbˉ)(c\bar{b})-quarkonium states Bc((cbˉ)1[1S0]>)B_c(|(c\bar{b})_{\bf 1}[^1S_0]>) and Bc((cbˉ)1[3S1]>)B^*_c(|(c\bar{b})_{\bf 1}[^3S_1]>) through the Z0Z^0 boson decays. As an important sequential work, we make a further discussion on the production of the more complicated PP-wave excited (cbˉ)(c\bar{b})-quarkonium states, i.e. (cbˉ)1[1P1]>|(c\bar{b})_{\bf 1}[^1P_1]> and (cbˉ)1[3PJ]>|(c\bar{b})_{\bf 1}[^3P_J]> (with J=(1,2,3)J=(1,2,3)). More over, we also calculate the channel with the two color-octet quarkonium states (cbˉ)8[1S0]g>|(c\bar{b})_{\bf 8}[^1S_0]g> and (cbˉ)8[3S1]g>|(c\bar{b})_{\bf 8}[^3S_1]g>, whose contributions to the decay width maybe at the same order of magnitude as that of the color-singlet PP-wave states according to the naive nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics scaling rules. The PP-wave states shall provide sizable contributions to the BcB_c production, whose decay width is about 20% of the total decay width ΓZ0Bc\Gamma_{Z^0\to B_c}. After summing up all the mentioned (cbˉ)(c\bar{b})-quarkonium states' contributions, we obtain ΓZ0Bc=235.9122.0+352.8\Gamma_{Z^0\to B_c} =235.9^{+352.8}_{-122.0} KeV, where the errors are caused by the main uncertainty sources.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures and 2 tables. basic formulae in the appendix are cut off to match the published version, which can be found in v1. to be published in Eur.Phys.J.

    Determination of oxygen stoichiometry in the mixed-valent manganites

    The possible redox (oxidation reduction) chemical methods for precisely determining the oxygen content in the perovskite manganites including hole-doped La1-xCaxMnOy and electron-doped La1-xTexMnOy compounds are described. For manganites annealed at different temperatures, the oxygen content of the samples was determined by a redox back titration in which the powder samples taken in a quartz crucible were dissolved in (1+1) sulfuric acid containing an excess of sodium oxalate, and the excess sodium oxalate was titrated with permanganate standard solution. The results indicate that the method is effective and highly reproducible. Moreover, the variation of oxygen content is also reflected in significantly affecting the electrical transport property of the samples, which is mainly considered to be closely related to introduce oxygen vacancies in the Mn-O-Mn network.Comment: 13 pages, 1 figure.     The effect of grain size on electrical transport and magnetic properties of La0.9Te0.1MnO3

    The effect of grain size on structural, magnetic and transport properties in electron-doped manganites La0.9Te0.1MnO3 has been investigated. All samples show a rhombohedral structure with the space group at room temperature. It shows that the Mn-O-Mn bond angle decreases and the Mn-O bond length increases with the increase of grain size. All samples undergo paramagnetic (PM)-ferromagnetic (FM) phase transition and an interesting phenomenon that both magnetization and the Curie temperature decrease with increasing grain size is observed, which is suggested to mainly originate from the increase of the Mn-O bond length . Additionally, obviously increases with decreasing grain size due to the increase of both the height and width of tunneling barriers with decreasing the grain size. The results indicate that both the intrinsic colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) and the extrinsic the extrinsic interfacial magnetoresistance (IMR) can be effectively tuned in La0.9Te0.1MnO3 by changing grain size.Comment: 15 pages,4 figures.     Based on a sample of 5.8X 10^7 J/psi events taken with the BESII detector, the branching fractions of J/psi--> 2(pi+pi-)eta and J/psi-->3(pi+pi-)eta are measured for the first time to be (2.26+-0.08+-0.27)X10^{-3} and (7.24+-0.96+-1.11)X10^{-4}, respectively.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figure

    A Monte Carlo program based on Geant3 has been developed for BESII detector simulation. The organization of the program is outlined, and the digitization procedure for simulating the response of various sub-detectors is described.     Measurement of branching fractions for the inclusive Cabibbo-favored ~K*0(892) and Cabibbo-suppressed K*0(892) decays of neutral and charged D mesons

    The branching fractions for the inclusive Cabibbo-favored ~K*0 and Cabibbo-suppressed K*0 decays of D mesons are measured based on a data sample of 33 pb-1 collected at and around the center-of-mass energy of 3.773 GeV with the BES-II detector at the BEPC collider. The branching fractions for the decays D+(0) -> ~K*0(892)X and D0 -> K*0(892)X are determined to be BF(D0 -> \~K*0X) = (8.7 +/- 4.0 +/- 1.2)%, BF(D+ -> ~K*0X) = (23.2 +/- 4.5 +/- 3.0)% and BF(D0 -> K*0X) = (2.8 +/- 1.2 +/- 0.4)%. An upper limit on the branching fraction at 90% C.L. for the decay D+ -> K*0(892)X is set to be BF(D+ -> K*0X) < 6.6%
