Ingot slicing machine and method
An improved method for simultaneously slicing one or a multiplicity of boules of silicon into silicon wafers is described. A plurality of vertical stacks of horizontal saw blades of circular configuration are arranged in juxtaposed coaxial alignment. Each blade is characterized by having a cutting diameter slightly greater than the cutting diameter of the blade arranged immediately above, imparting a simultaneous rotation to the blades

Recommendations for laboratory and in-situ measurements required for remote sensing of suspended material are presented. This study investigates the properties of the suspended materials, factors influencing the upwelling radiance, and the various types of remote sensing techniques. Calibration and correlation procedures are given to obtain the accuracy necessary to quantify the suspended materials by remote sensing. In addition, the report presents a survey of the national need for sediment data, the agencies that deal with and require the data of suspended sediment, and a summary of some recent findings of sediment measurements

Constructing Sobol' sequences with better two-dimensional projections
Direction numbers for generating Sobol' sequences that satisfy the so-called Property A in up to 1111 dimensions have previously been given in Joe and Kuo [ACM Trans. Math. Software, 29 (2003), pp. 49–57]. However, these Sobol' sequences may have poor two-dimensional projections. Here we provide a new set of direction numbers alleviating this problem. These are obtained by treating Sobol' sequences in d dimensions as (t, d)-sequences and then optimizing the t-values of the two-dimensional projections. Our target dimension is 21201
Component-by-component construction of good intermediate-rank lattice rules
It is known that the generating vector of a rank-1 lattice rule can be constructed component-by-component to achieve strong tractability error bounds in both weighted Korobov spaces and weighted Sobolev spaces. Since the weights for these spaces are nonincreasing, the first few variables are in a sense more important than the rest. We thus propose to copy the points of a rank-1 lattice rule a number of times in the first few dimensions to yield an intermediate-rank lattice rule. We show that the generating vector (and in weighted Sobolev spaces, the shift also) of an intermediate-rank lattice rule can also be constructed component-by-component to achieve strong tractability error bounds. In certain circumstances, these bounds are better than the corresponding bounds for rank-1 lattice rules
Digital Switching in the Quantum Domain
In this paper, we present an architecture and implementation algorithm such
that digital data can be switched in the quantum domain. First we define the
connection digraph which can be used to describe the behavior of a switch at a
given time, then we show how a connection digraph can be implemented using
elementary quantum gates. The proposed mechanism supports unicasting as well as
multicasting, and is strict-sense non-blocking. It can be applied to perform
either circuit switching or packet switching. Compared with a traditional space
or time domain switch, the proposed switching mechanism is more scalable.
Assuming an n-by-n quantum switch, the space consumption grows linearly, i.e.
O(n), while the time complexity is O(1) for unicasting, and O(log n) for
multicasting. Based on these advantages, a high throughput switching device can

Interpretation of the characteristics of ocean-dumped sewage sludge related to remote sensing
Wastewater sludge characteristics in general, and characteristics of wastewater sludges generated by the City of Philadelphia in particular, were addressed. The types and sources of wastewater sludges, a description of sludge treatment and disposal processes, examination of sludge generation and management for the City of Philadelphia, and definition of characteristics for typical east coast sludges undergoing ocean disposal were discussed. Specific differences exist between the characteristics of primary and secondary wastewater sludges, especially with the nature and size distribution of the solids particles. The sludges from the City of Philadelphia monitored during remote sensing experiments were mixtures of various sludge types and lacked distinguishing characteristics. In particular, the anaerobic digestion process exerted the most significant influence on sludge characteristics for the City of Philadelphia. The sludges generated by the City of Philadelphia were found to be typical and harbor no unique features
