Top quark precision physics at the International Linear Collider
Top quark production in the process at a future
linear electron positron collider with polarized beams is a powerful tool to
determine the scale of new physics. Studies at the \ttbar threshold will
allow for precise determination of the top quark mass in a well defined
theoretical framework. At higher energies vector, axial vector and tensorial CP
conserving couplings can be separately determined for the photon and the
component in the electro-weak production process. The sensitivity to new
physics would be dramatically improved w.r.t. to what expected from LHC for

The influence of the preparation method of NiOx photocathodes on the efficiency of p-type dye-sensitised solar cells
Improving the efficiency of p-type dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) is an important part of the development of high performance tandem DSCs. The optimization of the conversion efficiency of p-DSCs could make a considerable contribution in the improvement of solar cells at a molecular level. Nickel oxide is the most widely used material in p-DSCs, due to its ease of preparation, chemical and structural stability, and electrical properties. However, improvement of the quality and conductivity of NiO based photocathodes needs to be achieved to bring further improvements to the solar cell efficiency. Interplay between multiple scattering, emission, and absorption of light in the phosphor of a white light-emitting diode
We study light transport in phosphor plates of white light-emitting diodes
(LEDs). We measure the broadband diffuse transmission through phosphor plates
of varying YAG:Ce density. We distinguish the spectral ranges where
absorption, scattering, and re-emission dominate. Using diffusion theory, we
derive the transport and absorption mean free paths from first principles. We
find that both transport and absorption mean free paths are on the order of the
plate thickness. This means that phosphors in commercial LEDs operate well
within an intriguing albedo range around 0.7. We discuss how salient parameters
that can be derived from first principles control the optical properties of a

Function of the Endolysosomal Network in Cholesterol Homeostasis and Metabolic Associated Fatty Liver Disease (MAFLD)
BACKGROUND: Metabolic associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD), also known as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, has become the leading cause of chronic liver disease worldwide. Besides hepatic accumulation of triglycerides, dysregulated cholesterol metabolism is an important contributor to the pathogenesis of MAFLD. Maintenance of cholesterol homeostasis is highly dependent on cellular cholesterol uptake, and subsequently cholesterol transport to other membrane compartments, such as the endocytic reticulum (ER). SCOPE OF REVIEW: The endolysosomal network is key for regulating cellular homeostasis and adaptation, and emerging evidence has shown that the endolysosomal network is crucial to maintain metabolic homeostasis. In this review, we will summarize our current understanding of the role of the endolysosomal network in cholesterol homeostasis and its implications in MAFLD pathogenesis. MAJOR CONCLUSIONS: Although multiple endolysosomal proteins have been identified in the regulation of cholesterol uptake, intracellular transport, and degradation, their physiological role is incompletely understood. Further research should elucidate their role in controlling metabolic homeostasis and development of fatty liver disease
Determining the band gap and mean kinetic energy of atoms from reflection electron energy loss spectra
Reflection electron energy loss spectra from some insulating materials (CaCO3, Li2CO3, and SiO2) taken at relatively high incoming electron energies (5-40 keV) are analyzed. Here, one is bulk sensitive and a well-defined onset of inelastic excitations is observed from which one can infer the value of the band gap. An estimate of the band gap was obtained by fitting the spectra with a procedure that includes the recoil shift and recoil broadening affecting these measurements. The width of the elastic peak is directly connected to the mean kinetic energy of the atom in the material (Doppler broadening). The experimentally obtained mean kinetic energies of the O, C, Li, Ca, and Si atoms are compared with the calculated ones, and good agreement is found, especially if the effect of multiple scattering is taken into account. It is demonstrated experimentally that the onset of the inelastic excitation is also affected by Doppler broadening. Aided by this understanding, we can obtain a good fit of the elastic peak and the onset of inelastic excitations. For SiO2, good agreement is obtained with the well-established value of the band gap (8.9 eV) only if it is assumed that the intensity near the edge scales as (E - Egap)1.5. For CaCO3, the band gap obtained here (7 eV) is about 1 eV larger than the previous experimental value, whereas the value for Li2CO3 (7.5 eV) is the first experimental estimate
Cosmic rays studied with a hybrid high school detector array
The LORUN/NAHSA system is a pathfinder for hybrid cosmic ray research
combined with education and outreach in the field of astro-particle physics.
Particle detectors and radio antennae were mainly setup by students and placed
on public buildings. After fully digital data acquisition, coincidence
detections were selected. Three candidate events confirmed a working prototype,
which can be multiplied to extend further particle detector arrays on high
