Ion-beam-enhanced adhesion in the electronic stopping region
The use of ion beams in the electronic stopping region to improve the adhesion of insulators to other materials is described. In particular, the bonding of Au films to Teflon, ferrite, and SiO2 was improved by bombarding them with He and Cl, respectively. Improvements in bonding were also observed for Au on glass, Au and Cu on sapphire, and Si3N4 on Si. The mechanism is apparently associated with sputtering and track forming processes occurring in the electronic stopping region. Some applications are discussed
Stability conditions and the A2 quiver
For each integer n≥2 we describe the space of stability conditions on the derived category of the n-dimensional Ginzburg algebra associated to the quiver. The form of our results points to a close relationship between these spaces and the Frobenius-Saito structure on the unfolding space of the singularity
Specific heat and thermal conductivity of ferromagnetic magnons in Yttrium Iron Garnet
The specific heat and thermal conductivity of the insulating ferrimagnet
YFeO (Yttrium Iron Garnet, YIG) single crystal were measured
down to 50 mK. The ferromagnetic magnon specific heat shows a
characteristic dependence down to 0.77 K. Below 0.77 K, a downward
deviation is observed, which is attributed to the magnetic dipole-dipole
interaction with typical magnitude of 10 eV. The ferromagnetic magnon
thermal conductivity does not show the characteristic
dependence below 0.8 K. To fit the data, both magnetic defect
scattering effect and dipole-dipole interaction are taken into account. These
results complete our understanding of the thermodynamic and thermal transport
properties of the low-lying ferromagnetic magnons.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
Magnetic Interaction in the Geometrically Frustrated Triangular Lattice Antiferromagnet
The spin wave excitations of the geometrically frustrated triangular lattice
antiferromagnet (TLA) have been measured using high resolution
inelastic neutron scattering. Antiferromagnetic interactions up to third
nearest neighbors in the ab plane (J_1, J_2, J_3, with
and ), as well as out-of-plane coupling (J_z, with
) are required to describe the spin wave dispersion
relations, indicating a three dimensional character of the magnetic
interactions. Two energy dips in the spin wave dispersion occur at the
incommensurate wavevectors associated with multiferroic phase, and can be
interpreted as dynamic precursors to the magnetoelectric behavior in this
system.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, published in Phys. Rev. Let

Dynamics of composite Haldane spin chains in IPA-CuCl3
Magnetic excitations in the quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnet IPA-CuCl3
are studied by cold neutron inelastic scattering. Strongly dispersive gap
excitations are observed. Contrary to previously proposed models, the system is
best described as an asymmetric quantum spin ladder. The observed spectrum is
interpreted in terms of ``composite'' Haldane spin chains. The key difference
from actual S=1 chains is a sharp cutoff of the single-magnon spectrum at a
certain critical wave vector.Comment: 4 pages 4 figure
