Parallel Computing on a PC Cluster

    Get PDF
The tremendous advance in computer technology in the past decade has made it possible to achieve the performance of a supercomputer on a very small budget. We have built a multi-CPU cluster of Pentium PC capable of parallel computations using the Message Passing Interface (MPI). We will discuss the configuration, performance, and application of the cluster to our work in physics.Comment: 3 pages, uses Latex and aipproc.cl

On the symbolic manipulation and code generation for elasto-plastic material matrices

    Get PDF
A computerized procedure for symbolic manipulations and FORTRAN code generation of an elasto-plastic material matrix for finite element applications is presented. Special emphasis is placed on expression simplifications during intermediate derivations, optimal code generation, and interface with the main program. A systematic procedure is outlined to avoid redundant algebraic manipulations. Symbolic expressions of the derived material stiffness matrix are automatically converted to RATFOR code which is then translated into FORTRAN statements through a preprocessor. To minimize the interface problem with the main program, a template file is prepared so that the translated FORTRAN statements can be merged into the file to form a subroutine (or a submodule). Three constitutive models; namely, von Mises plasticity, Drucker-Prager model, and a concrete plasticity model, are used as illustrative examples

Anisotropic superconducting properties of aligned Sm0.95_{0.95}La0.05_{0.05}FeAsO0.85_{0.85}F0.15_{0.15} microcrystalline powder

The Sm0.95_{0.95}La0.05_{0.05}FeAsO0.85_{0.85}F0.15_{0.15} compound is a quasi-2D layered superconductor with a superconducting transition temperature Tc_c = 52 K. Due to the Fe spin-orbital related anisotropic exchange coupling (antiferromagnetic or ferromagnetic fluctuation), the tetragonal microcrystalline powder can be aligned at room temperature using the field-rotation method where the tetragonal ab\it{ab}-plane is parallel to the aligned magnetic field Ba_{a} and c\it{c}-axis along the rotation axis. Anisotropic superconducting properties with anisotropic diamagnetic ratio χc/χab∼\chi_{c}/\chi_{ab}\sim 2.4 + 0.6 was observed from low field susceptibility χ\chi(T) and magnetization M(Ba_{a}). The anisotropic low-field phase diagram with the variation of lower critical field gives a zero-temperature penetration depth λc\lambda_{c}(0) = 280 nm and λab\lambda_{ab}(0) = 120 nm. The magnetic fluctuation used for powder alignment at 300 K may be related with the pairing mechanism of superconductivity at lower temperature.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figure

Genetic variation at Exon2 of TLR4 gene and its association with resistant traits in chicken

This study was conducted to analyze the polymorphisms of chicken Toll-like receptors 4(TLR4) gene and aimed to provide a theoretical foundation for a further research on correlation between chicken TLR4 gene and disease resistance. Genetic variations at exon 2 of TLR4 gene in 14 chicken breeds and the red jungle fowl were detected by PCR-SSCP method and two alleles and three genotypes were found, Tibetan chicken and red jungle fowl only had BB genotype, while the others presented three genotypes of AA, BB and AB. Sequencing results showed two mutations, G114A and G142A, located at exon 2 of TLR4 gene. The results of Chi square test showed that all populations, except Xianju chicken, were in accordance with Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium at this locus (P > 0.05). According to analysis of population genetic variation, all the populations were at moderate polymorphism (0.25 < PIC < 0.5) except red jungle fowl and Tibetan chicken (PIC = 0). The study demonstrated that there were differences of normal anti-disease ability in Chinese indigenous chicken breeds and appeared no significant correlation with body size, product type and geographical location. The associated analysis of results showed that the SNPs of TLR4 gene in the study were not linked with potential major loci or genes affecting some resistant traits.Key words: Chicken, TLR4 gene, polymorphism, resistant traits

Thermodynamic properties of tetrameric bond-alternating spin chains

Thermodynamic properties of a tetrameric bond-alternating Heisenberg spin chain with ferromagnetic-ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic exchange interactions are studied using the transfer-matrix renormalization group and compared to experimental measurements. The temperature dependence of the uniform susceptibility exhibits typical ferrimagnetic features. Both the uniform and staggered magnetic susceptibilities diverge in the limit T→0T\to 0, indicating that the ground state has both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic long-range orders. A double-peak structure appears in the temperature dependence of the specific heat. Our numerical calculation gives a good account for the temperature and field dependence of the susceptibility, the magnetization, and the specific heat for Cu(3-Clpy)2_{2}(N3_{3})2_{2} (3-Clpy=3-Chloroyridine).Comment: 8 pages, 12 figures; Replaced with final version accepted in Phys.
