Evolution of mixing state of black carbon particles: Aircraft measurements over the western Pacific in March 2004
We report the evolution of the mixing state of black carbon (BC) particles in urban plumes measured by an airborne single particle soot photometer. The aircraft observations were conducted over the ocean near the coast of Japan in March 2004. The number fiaction of coated BC particles with a core diameter of 180 mn increased from 0.35 to 0.63 within 12 hours (h), namely 2.3% h-1, after being emitted from the Nagoya urban area in Japan. BC particles with a core diameter of 250 nm increased at the slower rate of 1.0% h-1. The increase in coated BC particles was associated with increases in non-sea salt sulfate and water-soluble organic carbon by a factor of approximately two, indicating that these compounds contributed to the coating on the BC particles. These results give direct evidence that BC particles become internally mixed on a time scale of 12 h in urban plumes. Copyright 2007 by the American Geophysical Union

Chemical characterization of water-soluble organic carbon aerosols at a rural site in the Pearl River Delta, China, in the summer of 2006
Online measurements of water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) aerosols were made using a particle-into-liquid sampler (PILS) combined with a total organic carbon (TOC) analyzer at a rural site in the Pearl River Delta region, China, in July 2006. A macroporous nonionic (DAX-8) resin was used to quantify hydrophilic and hydrophobic WSOC, which are defined as the fractions of WSOC that penetrated through and retained on the DAX-8 column, respectively. Laboratory calibrations showed that hydrophilic WSOC (WSOCHPI) included low-molecular aliphatic dicarboxylic acids and carbonyls, saccharides, and amines, while hydrophobic WSOC (WSOCHPO) included longer-chain aliphatic dicarboxylic acids and carbonyls, aromatic acids, phenols, organic nitrates, cyclic acids, and fulvic acids. On average, total WSOC (TWSOC) accounted for 60% of OC, and WSOCHPO accounted for 60% of TWSOC. Both WSOC HIP and WSOCHPO increased with photochemical aging determined from the NOx/NOy ratio. In particular, the average WSOCHPO mass was found to increase by a factor of five within a timescale of ∼10 hours, which was substantially larger than that of WSOCHPI (by a factor of 2-3). The total increase in OC mass with photochemical aging was associated with the large increase in WSOCHPO mass. These results, combined with the laboratory calibrations, suggest that significant amounts of hydrophobic organic compounds (likely containing large carbon numbers) were produced by photochemical processing. By contrast, water-insoluble OC (WIOC) mass did not exhibit significant changes with photochemical aging, suggesting that chemical transformation of WIOC to WSOC was not a dominant process for the production of WSOC during the study period. Fine properties of self-similar solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations
We study the solutions of the nonstationary incompressible Navier--Stokes
equations in , , of self-similar form , obtained from small and homogeneous initial
data . We construct an explicit asymptotic formula relating the
self-similar profile of the velocity field to its corresponding initial
datum
Prebiotic Organic Microstructures
Micro- and sub-micrometer spheres, tubules and fiber-filament soft structures have been synthesized in our experiments conducted with 3 MeV proton irradiations of a mixture of simple inorganic constituents, CO, N2 and H2O. We analysed the irradiation products, with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). These laboratory organic structures produced wide variety of proteinous and non-proteinous amino acids after HCl hydrolysis. The enantiomer analysis for D-, L- alanine confirmed that the amino acids were abiotically synthesized during the laboratory experiment. Considering hydrothermal activity, the presence of CO2 and H2, of a ferromagnesian silicate mineral environment, of an Earth magnetic field which was much less intense during Archean times than nowadays and consequently of a proton excitation source which was much more abundant, we propose that our laboratory organic microstructures might be synthesized during Archean times. We show similarities in morphology and in formation with some terrestrial Archean microstructures and we suggest that some of the observed Archean carbon spherical and filamentous microstructures might be composed of abiogenic organic molecules. We further propose a search for such prebiotic organic signatures on Mars. This article has been posted on Nature precedings on 21 July 2010 [1]. Extinct radionuclides as source of excitation have been replaced by cosmic radiations which were much more intense 3.5 Ga ago because of a much less intense Earth magnetic field. The new version of the article has been presented at the ORIGINS conference in Montpellier in july 2011 [2] and has since been published in Origins of Life and Evolution of Biospheres 42 (4) 307-316, 2012.

Predominantly Superconducting Origin of Large Energy Gaps in Underdoped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8-d from Tunneling Spectroscopy
New tunneling data are reported in underdoped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8-d using
superconductor-insulator-superconductor break junctions. Energy gaps, Delta, of
51+2, 54+2 and 57+3 meV are observed for three crystals with Tc=77, 74, and 70
K respectively. These energy gaps are nearly three times larger than for
overdoped crystals with similar Tc. Detailed examination of tunneling spectra
over a wide doping range from underdoped to overdoped, including the Josephson
IcRn product, indicate that these energy gaps are predominantly of
superconducting origin.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, 1 tabl
Observation of Andreev reflection in the c-axis transport of Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+x} single crystals near T_c and search for the preformed-pair state
We observed an enhancement of the -axis differential conductance around
the zero-bias in AuBiSrCaCuO (Bi2212) junctions near the
superconducting transition temperature . We attribute the conductance
enhancement to the Andreev reflection between the surface Cu-O bilayer with
suppressed superconductivity and the neighboring superconducting inner bilayer.
The continuous evolution from depression to an enhancement of the zero-bias
differential conductance, as the temperature approaches from below,
points to weakening of the barrier strength of the non-superconducting layer
between adjacent Cu-O bilayers. We observed that the conductance enhancement
persisted up to a few degrees above in junctions prepared on slightly
overdoped Bi2212 crystals. However, no conductance enhancement was observed
above in underdoped crystals, although recently proposed theoretical
consideration suggests an even wider temperature range of enhanced zero-bias
conductance. This seems to provide negative perspective to the existence of the
phase-incoherent preformed pairs in the pseudogap state.Comment: 17 pages including 4 figure
Mean-field analysis of the stability of a K-Rb Fermi-Bose mixture
We compare the experimental stability diagram of a Fermi-Bose mixture of K-40
and Rb-87 atoms with attractive interaction to the predictions of a mean-field
theoretical model. We discuss how this comparison can be used to give a better
estimate of the interspecies scattering length, which is currently known from
collisional measurements with larger uncertainty.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
