    Chemistry of fuel deposits and sediments and their predursors

    The mechanism of solid deposit formation on hot engine parts from turbine fuels is investigated. Deposit formation is associated with oxidation of the hydrocarbon fuel. Therefore, oxidation rates and soluble gum formation were measured for several jet turbine fuels and pure hydrocarbon mixtures. Experiments were performed at 130 C using thermal initiation and at 100 C using ditertiary butyl peroxide as a chemical initiator. Correlation of the data shows that the ratio of rate of oxidation to rate of gum formation for a single fuel is not much affected by experimental conditions, even though there are differences in the abilities of different hydrocarbons to initiate and continue the oxidation. This indicates a close association of gum formation with the oxidation process. Oxidations of n-dodecane, tetralin and the more unstable jet fuels are autocatalytic, while those of 2-ethylnaphthalene and a stable jet fuel are self-retarding. However, the ratio of oxidation rate to gum formation rate appear to be nearly constant for each substrate. The effect of oxygen pressure on gum and oxidation formation was also studied. Dependence of gum formation on the concentration of initiator at 100 C is discussed and problems for future study are suggested

    Self force on particle in orbit around a black hole

    We study the self force acting on a scalar charge in uniform circular motion around a Schwarzschild black hole. The analysis is based on a direct calculation of the self force via mode decomposition, and on a regularization procedure based on Ori's mode-sum regularization prescription. We find the four self-force at arbitrary radii and angular velocities (both geodesic and non-geodesic), in particular near the black hole, where general-relativistic effects are strongest, and for fast motion.     AtNPF2.5 modulates chloride (Cl -bar) efflux from roots of Arabidopsis thaliana

    The accumulation of high concentrations of chloride (Cl(-)) in leaves can adversely affect plant growth. When comparing different varieties of the same Cl(-) sensitive plant species those that exclude relatively more Cl(-) from their shoots tend to perform better under saline conditions; however, the molecular mechanisms involved in maintaining low shoot Cl(-) remain largely undefined. Recently, it was shown that the NRT1/PTR Family 2.4 protein (NPF2.4) loads Cl(-) into the root xylem, which affects the accumulation of Cl(-) in Arabidopsis shoots. Here we characterize NPF2.5, which is the closest homolog to NPF2.4 sharing 83.2% identity at the amino acid level. NPF2.5 is predominantly expressed in root cortical cells and its transcription is induced by salt. Functional characterisation of NPF2.5 via its heterologous expression in yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) and Xenopus laevis oocytes indicated that NPF2.5 is likely to encode a Cl(-) permeable transporter. Arabidopsis npf2.5 T-DNA knockout mutant plants exhibited a significantly lower Cl(-) efflux from roots, and a greater Cl(-) accumulation in shoots compared to salt-treated Col-0 wild-type plants. At the same time, [Formula: see text] content in the shoot remained unaffected. Accumulation of Cl(-) in the shoot increased following (1) amiRNA-induced knockdown of NPF2.5 transcript abundance in the root, and (2) constitutive over-expression of NPF2.5. We suggest that both these findings are consistent with a role for NPF2.5 in modulating Cl(-) transport. Based on these results, we propose that NPF2.5 functions as a pathway for Cl(-) efflux from the root, contributing to exclusion of Cl(-) from the shoot of Arabidopsis.Bo Li, Jiaen Qiu, Maheswari Jayakannan, Bo Xu, Yuan Li, Gwenda M.     Size Gap for Zero Temperature Black Holes in Semiclassical Gravity

    We show that a gap exists in the allowed sizes of all zero temperature static spherically symmetric black holes in semiclassical gravity when only conformally invariant fields are present. The result holds for both charged and uncharged black holes. By size we mean the proper area of the event horizon. The range of sizes that do not occur depends on the numbers and types of quantized fields that are present.
