    Resonant x-ray scattering study on multiferroic BiMnO3

    Resonant x-ray scattering is performed near the Mn K-absorption edge for an epitaxial thin film of BiMnO3. The azimuthal angle dependence of the resonant (003) peak (in monoclinic indices) is measured with different photon polarizations; for the σπ\sigma\to\pi' channel a 3-fold symmetric oscillation is observed in the intensity variation, while the σσ\sigma\to\sigma' scattering intensity remains constant. These features are accounted for in terms of the peculiar ordering of the manganese 3d orbitals in BiMnO3. It is demonstrated that the resonant peak persists up to 770 K with an anomaly around 440 K; these high and low temperatures coincide with the structural transition temperatures, seen in bulk, with and without a symmetry change, respectively. A possible relationship of the orbital order with the ferroelectricity of the system is discussed.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figure

    The development of legal protection for mediation confidentiality in Hong Kong

    Abstract: One of the underlying objectives of the reformed civil justice system in Hong Kong is to facilitate the settlement of disputes. The court is now under the duty of active case management to encourage and promote the use of an alternative dispute resolution procedure where appropriate. Facilitative mediation was generally practised in Hong Kong before the Civil Justice Reform. By issuing a specific practice direction on mediation, the judiciary has given a strong boost for this process to the extent that parties may even be penalized in costs if they unreasonably refuse to mediate. The continuous transfer of conflict resolution from the hands of the judge to the parties gives rise to an increasing risk that information disclosed in mediation may be used to the parties' disadvantage in subsequent legal proceedings. This paper examines the precise scope of three common law principles that protect confidentiality of mediation communications. Drawing upon the approaches of local institutions, the US Uniform Mediation Act and the EU Mediation Directive, it considers the arguments that might be relevant in deciding what law should govern the issues at present not covered by the existing legal framework, a question that has become more pressing in view of the fact that negotiations have begun on a proposed mediation ordinance to deal with it.published_or_final_versio

    Mutual productivity spillovers between foreign and local firms in China

    The existing literature treats advanced technology sourcing as the only cause of reverse productivity spillovers from local to foreign firms and implies that mutual spillovers between foreign and local firms can only happen in the developed world. This paper argues that the diffusion of indigenous technology and local knowledge helps the productivity enhancement of multinationals, so that there can be mutual spillovers even in a developing country. The results from a large-sample firm-level econometric analysis and a comparative case study of seven companies in Chinese manufacturing support this new argument, as mutual spillovers are identified between local Chinese firms and overseas Chinese or OECD-invested firms

    Revisiting the issue of mediator immunity: the way forward for prospective mediation legislation in Hong Kong

    Mediator immunity has been identified as one major issue for possible future mediation legislation in the 2010 Consultation Paper released by the Hong Kong Government. So far there is no uniform stance on the issue around the world. This paper analyses relevant methods for determining mediator liability and the scope of that liability in different countries. Hong Kong’s revised Arbitration Ordinance has taken a forward through its qualified immunity position with respect to the issue of mediator liability under the arbitration framework. This position is commendable for adapting to the current trend of dispute resolution. The paper concludes that a similar approach should be adopted in future mediation legislation in Hong Kong.published_or_final_versio

    Molecular cytogenetic mapping of Cucumis sativus and C. melo using highly repetitive DNA sequences

    Chromosomes often serve as one of the most important molecular aspects of studying the evolution of species. Indeed, most of the crucial mutations that led to differentiation of species during the evolution have occurred at the chromosomal level. Furthermore, the analysis of pachytene chromosomes appears to be an invaluable tool for the study of evolution due to its effectiveness in chromosome identification and precise physical gene mapping. By applying fluorescence in situ hybridization of 45S rDNA and CsCent1 probes to cucumber pachytene chromosomes, here, we demonstrate that cucumber chromosomes 1 and 2 may have evolved from fusions of ancestral karyotype with chromosome number n= 12. This conclusion is further supported by the centromeric sequence similarity between cucumber and melon, which suggests that these sequences evolved from a common ancestor. It may be after or during speciation that these sequences were specifically amplified, after which they diverged and specific sequence variants were homogenized. Additionally, a structural change on the centromeric region of cucumber chromosome 4 was revealed by fiber-FISH using the mitochondrial-related repetitive sequences, BAC-E38 and CsCent1. These showed the former sequences being integrated into the latter in multiple regions.     High-magnetic field phase diagram and failure of magnetic Gr\"uneisen scaling in LiFePO4_4

    We report the magnetic phase diagram of single-crystalline LiFePO4_4 in magnetic fields up to 58~T and present a detailed study of magneto-elastic coupling by means of high-resolution capacitance dilatometry. Large anomalies at \tn\ in the thermal expansion coefficient α\alpha imply pronounced magneto-elastic coupling. Quantitative analysis yields the magnetic Gr\"uneisen parameter γmag=6.7(5)107\gamma_{\rm mag}=6.7(5)\cdot 10^{-7}~mol/J. The positive hydrostatic pressure dependence dTN/dp=1.46(11)dT_{\rm N}/dp = 1.46(11)~K/GPa is dominated by uniaxial effects along the aa-axis. Failure of Gr\"uneisen scaling below 40\approx 40~K, i.e., below the peak temperature in the magneto-electric coupling coefficient [\onlinecite{toft2015anomalous}], implies several competing degrees of freedom and indicates relevance of recently observed hybrid excitations~[\onlinecite{yiu2017hybrid}]. A broad and strongly magnetic-field-dependent anomaly in α\alpha in this temperature regime highlight the relevance of structure changes. Upon application of magnetic fields BbB||b-axis, a pronounced jump in the magnetisation implies spin-reorientation at BSF=32B_{\rm SF} = 32~T as well as a precursing phase at 29~T and T=1.5T=1.5~K. In a two-sublattice mean-field model, the saturation field Bsat,b=64(2)B_{\rm sat,b} = 64(2)~T enables the determination of the effective antiferromagnetic exchange interaction Jaf=2.68(5)J_{\rm af} = 2.68(5)~meV as well as the anisotropies Db=0.53(4)D_{\rm b} = -0.53(4)~meV and Dc=0.44(8)D_{\rm c} = 0.44(8)~meV

    Anisotropic strains and magnetoresistance of La_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}MnO_{3}

    Thin films of perovskite manganite La_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}MnO_{3} were grown epitaxially on SrTiO_3(100), MgO(100) and LaAlO_3(100) substrates by the pulsed laser deposition method. Microscopic structures of these thin film samples as well as a bulk sample were fully determined by x-ray diffraction measurements. The unit cells of the three films have different shapes, i.e., contracted tetragonal, cubic, and elongated tetragonal for SrTiO_3, MgO, and LaAlO_3 cases, respectively, while the unit cell of the bulk is cubic. It is found that the samples with cubic unit cell show smaller peak magnetoresistance than the noncubic ones do. The present result demonstrates that the magnetoresistance of La_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}MnO_{3} can be controlled by lattice distortion via externally imposed strains.Comment: Revtex, 10 pages, 2 figure
