Stationary phase slip state in quasi-one-dimensional rings
The nonuniform superconducting state in a ring in which the order parameter
vanishing at one point is studied. This state is characterized by a jump of the
phase by at the point where the order parameter becomes zero. In uniform
rings such a state is a saddle-point state and consequently unstable. However,
for non-uniform rings with e.g. variations of geometrical or physical
parameters or with attached wires this state can be stabilized and may be

An Algorithmic Framework for Labeling Network Maps
Drawing network maps automatically comprises two challenging steps, namely
laying out the map and placing non-overlapping labels. In this paper we tackle
the problem of labeling an already existing network map considering the
application of metro maps. We present a flexible and versatile labeling model.
Despite its simplicity, we prove that it is NP-complete to label a single line
of the network. For a restricted variant of that model, we then introduce an
efficient algorithm that optimally labels a single line with respect to a given
weighting function. Based on that algorithm, we present a general and
sophisticated workflow for multiple metro lines, which is experimentally

The dynamics of a hole in a CuO_4 plaquette: electron energy-loss spectroscopy of Li_2CuO_2
We have measured the energy and momentum dependent loss function of Li_2CuO_2
single crystals by means of electron energy-loss spectroscopy in transmission.
Using the same values for the model parameters, the low-energy features of the
spectrum as well as published Cu 2p_(3/2) x-ray photoemission data of Li_2CuO_2
are well described by a cluster model that consists of a single CuO_4 plaquette
only. This demonstrates that charge excitations in Li_2CuO_2 are strongly

Time reversal in thermoacoustic tomography - an error estimate
The time reversal method in thermoacoustic tomography is used for
approximating the initial pressure inside a biological object using
measurements of the pressure wave made on a surface surrounding the object.

A dichotomy for non-repeating queries with negation in probabilistic databases
This paper shows that any non-repeating conjunctive rela-tional query with negation has either polynomial time or #P-hard data complexity on tuple-independent probabilis-tic databases. This result extends a dichotomy by Dalvi and Suciu for non-repeating conjunctive queries to queries with negation. The tractable queries with negation are precisely the hierarchical ones and can be recognised efficiently. 1
Towards Feature Learning for HMM-based Offline Handwriting Recognition
Statistical modelling techniques for automatic reading systems substantially rely on the availability of compact and meaningful feature representations. State-of-the-art feature extraction for offline handwriting recognition is usually based on heuristic approaches that describe either basic geometric properties or statistical distributions of raw pixel values. Working well on average, still fundamental insights into the nature of handwriting are desired. In this paper we present a novel approach for the automatic extraction of appearance-based representations of offline handwriting data. Given the framework of deep belief networks -- Restricted Boltzmann Machines -- a two-stage method for feature learning and optimization is developed. Given two standard corpora of both Arabic and Roman handwriting data it is demonstrated across script boundaries, that automatically learned features achieve recognition results comparable to state-of-the-art handcrafted features. Given these promising results the potential of feature learning for future reading systems is discussed
Specific IgE Response to Purified and Recombinant Allergens in Latex Allergy
Background
In recent years, allergy to natural rubber latex has emerged as a major allergy among certain occupational groups and patients with underlying diseases. The sensitization and development of latex allergy has been attributed to exposure to products containing residual latex proteins. Although improved manufacturing procedures resulted in a considerable reduction of new cases, the potential risk for some patient groups is still great. In addition the prevalent cross-reactivity of latex proteins with other food allergens poses a major concern. A number of purified allergens and a few commercial kits are currently available, but no concerted effort was undertaken to evaluate them. Methods
We studied 11 purified latex allergens, Hev b 1 to Hev b 10, and Hev b 13 along with several crude allergen extracts and two commercial ImmunoCAP assays to evaluate specific IgE antibody in the sera from latex allergic patients and controls. Health care workers and spina bifida patients with clinical symptoms of latex allergy, spina bifida patients without latex allergy, and non-atopic health care workers have been studied. Results
The results suggest that Hev b 2, 5, 6, and 13 together identified over 80 percent health care workers with latex allergy, while Hev b 6 along with Hev b 1 or 3 detected specific IgE antibody in all sera studied from patients with spina bifida and latex allergy. The ImmunoCAP results using both Hev b 5 amplified and non-amplified closely agreed with the clinical diagnosis of latex allergy in health care workers and in spina bifida. Conclusion
Although the purified allergens and crude extracts reacted diversely with IgE from different patient groups, the results indicated that use of certain combinations of purified recombinant antigens will be useful in commercial kits or in in-house assays for detecting specific IgE antibody in the sera. The results suggest that a combination of Hev b 2, 3, 5, 6, and 13 together detected specific IgE in 80% of the sera from latex allergic patients. Both ImmunoCAPs correctly identified over 95% of latex allergic patients, however, showed reactivity with a few normal control subject
Extended Range Passive Wireless Tag System and Method
A passive wireless tag assembly comprises a plurality of antennas and transmission lines interconnected with circuitry and constructed and arranged in a Van Atta array or configuration to reflect an interrogator signal in the direction from where it came. The circuitry may comprise at least one surface acoustic wave (SAW)-based circuit that functions as a signal reflector and is operatively connected with an information circuit. In another embodiment, at least one delay circuit and/or at least one passive modulation circuit(s) are utilized.
