    Review on efficiency and anomalies in stock markets

    The efficient-market hypothesis (EMH) is one of the most important economic and financial hypotheses that have been tested over the past century. Due to many abnormal phenomena and conflicting evidence, otherwise known as anomalies against EMH, some academics have questioned whether EMH is valid, and pointed out that the financial literature has substantial evidence of anomalies, so that many theories have been developed to explain some anomalies. To address the issue, this paper reviews the theory and literature on market efficiency and market anomalies. We give a brief review on market efficiency and clearly define the concept of market efficiency and the EMH. We discuss some efforts that challenge the EMH. We review different market anomalies and different theories of Behavioral Finance that could be used to explain such market anomalies. This review is useful to academics for developing cutting-edge treatments of financial theory that EMH, anomalies, and Behavioral Finance underlie. The review is also beneficial to investors for making choices of investment products and strategies that suit their risk preferences and behavioral traits predicted

    Galerkin FEM for fractional order parabolic equations with initial data in H−s, 0<s≤1H^{-s},~0 < s \le 1

    We investigate semi-discrete numerical schemes based on the standard Galerkin and lumped mass Galerkin finite element methods for an initial-boundary value problem for homogeneous fractional diffusion problems with non-smooth initial data. We assume that Ω⊂Rd\Omega\subset \mathbb{R}^d, d=1,2,3d=1,2,3 is a convex polygonal (polyhedral) domain. We theoretically justify optimal order error estimates in L2L_2- and H1H^1-norms for initial data in H−s(Ω), 0≤s≤1H^{-s}(\Omega),~0\le s \le 1. We confirm our theoretical findings with a number of numerical tests that include initial data vv being a Dirac δ\delta-function supported on a (d−1)(d-1)-dimensional manifold.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figure

    Improving the sensitivity of Higgs boson searches in the golden channel

    Leptonic decays of the Higgs boson in the ZZ* channel yield what is known as the golden channel due to its clean signature and good total invariant mass resolution. In addition, the full kinematic distribution of the decay products can be reconstructed, which, nonetheless, is not taken into account in traditional search strategy relying only on measurements of the total invariant mass. In this work we implement a type of multivariate analysis known as the matrix element method, which exploits differences in the full production and decay matrix elements between the Higgs boson and the dominant irreducible background from q bar{q} -> ZZ*. Analytic expressions of the differential distributions for both the signal and the background are also presented. We perform a study for the Large Hadron Collider at sqrt{s}=7 TeV for Higgs masses between 175 and 350 GeV. We find that, with an integrated luminosity of 2.5 fb^-1 or higher, improvements in the order of 10 - 20 % could be obtained for both discovery significance and exclusion limits in the high mass region, where the differences in the angular correlations between signal and background are most pronounced.Comment: 31 pages, 8 figures. v2: Minus signs in definitions of angles corrected.     Short-Baseline Neutrino Oscillations at a Neutrino Factory

    Within the framework of three-neutrino and four-neutrino scenarios that can describe the results of the LSND experiment, we consider the capabilities of short baseline neutrino oscillation experiments at a neutrino factory. We find that, when short baseline (L \alt 100 km) neutrino factory measurements are used together with other accelerator-based oscillation results, the complete three-neutrino parameter space can best be determined by measuring the rate of νe→ντ\nu_e \to \nu_\tau oscillations, and measuring CP violation with either νe→νμ\nu_e \to \nu_\mu or νμ→ντ\nu_\mu \to \nu_\tau oscillations (including the corresponding antineutrino channels). With measurements of CP violation in both νe→νμ\nu_e \to \nu_\mu and νμ→ντ\nu_\mu \to \nu_\tau it may be possible to distinguish between the three- and four-neutrino cases.Comment: 16 pages, Revtex (single-spaced), 8 postscript figures, uses epsf.st

    Tests of Higgs Boson Couplings at a mu+mu- Collider

    We investigate the potential of a muon collider for testing the presence of anomalous Higgs boson couplings. We consider the case of a light (less than 160GeV160 GeV) Higgs boson and study the effects on the Higgs branching ratios and total width, which could be induced by the non standard couplings created by a class of dim=6 SU(3)×SU(2)×U(1)SU(3)\times SU(2)\times U(1) gauge invariant operators satisfying the constraints imposed by the present and future hadronic and e−e+e^-e^+ colliders. For each operator we give the minimal value of the μ+μ−\mu^+\mu^- integrated luminosity needed for the muon collider (μC\mu C) to improve these constraints. Depending on the operator and the Higgs mass, this minimal μC\mu C luminosity lies between 0.1fb−10.1 fb^{-1} and 100fb−1100 fb^{-1}.Comment: 18 pages and 4 figures; version to be published in Phys.     Color-Octet Charmonium Production in Top Quark Decays

    We calculate the direct production rate of J/ψJ/\psi in top quark decays. The color-octet J/ψJ/\psi production via t→W+bJ/ψt\rightarrow W^+ b J/\psi is shown to have a large branching ratio of order 1.5×10−41.5\times 10^{-4}, which is over an order of magnitude higher than that of the color-singlet J/ψJ/\psi production via t→W+bJ/ψ g gt\rightarrow W^+ b J/\psi~g~g or t→W+b χcJ gt\rightarrow W^+ b~\chi_{cJ}~g followed by χcJ→J/ψ γ\chi_{cJ}\rightarrow J/\psi~\gamma. This result can be used as a powerful tool to test the importance of the color-octet mechanism in heavy quarkonium production.Comment: 10 pages LaTex (2 figures in PS-file
