Neuronal glucose transporter isoform 3 deficient mice demonstrate features of autism spectrum disorders.
Neuronal glucose transporter (GLUT) isoform 3 deficiency in null heterozygous mice led to abnormal spatial learning and working memory but normal acquisition and retrieval during contextual conditioning, abnormal cognitive flexibility with intact gross motor ability, electroencephalographic seizures, perturbed social behavior with reduced vocalization and stereotypies at low frequency. This phenotypic expression is unique as it combines the neurobehavioral with the epileptiform characteristics of autism spectrum disorders. This clinical presentation occurred despite metabolic adaptations consisting of an increase in microvascular/glial GLUT1, neuronal GLUT8 and monocarboxylate transporter isoform 2 concentrations, with minimal to no change in brain glucose uptake but an increase in lactate uptake. Neuron-specific glucose deficiency has a negative impact on neurodevelopment interfering with functional competence. This is the first description of GLUT3 deficiency that forms a possible novel genetic mechanism for pervasive developmental disorders, such as the neuropsychiatric autism spectrum disorders, requiring further investigation in humans
Anomalous time correlation in two-dimensional driven diffusive systems
We study the time correlation function of a density field in two-dimensional
driven diffusive systems within the framework of fluctuating hydrodynamics. It
is found that the time correlation exhibits power-law behavior in an
intermediate time regime in the case that the fluctuation-dissipation relation
is violated and that the power-law exponent depends on the extent of this
violation. We obtain this result by employing a renormalization group method to
treat a logarithmic divergence in time.Comment: 6 page
Automating Carotid Intima-Media Thickness Video Interpretation with Convolutional Neural Networks
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of mortality yet largely
preventable, but the key to prevention is to identify at-risk individuals
before adverse events. For predicting individual CVD risk, carotid intima-media
thickness (CIMT), a noninvasive ultrasound method, has proven to be valuable,
offering several advantages over CT coronary artery calcium score. However,
each CIMT examination includes several ultrasound videos, and interpreting each
of these CIMT videos involves three operations: (1) select three end-diastolic
ultrasound frames (EUF) in the video, (2) localize a region of interest (ROI)
in each selected frame, and (3) trace the lumen-intima interface and the
media-adventitia interface in each ROI to measure CIMT. These operations are
tedious, laborious, and time consuming, a serious limitation that hinders the
widespread utilization of CIMT in clinical practice. To overcome this
limitation, this paper presents a new system to automate CIMT video
interpretation. Our extensive experiments demonstrate that the suggested system
significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art methods. The superior
performance is attributable to our unified framework based on convolutional
neural networks (CNNs) coupled with our informative image representation and
effective post-processing of the CNN outputs, which are uniquely designed for
each of the above three operations.Comment: J. Y. Shin, N. Tajbakhsh, R. T. Hurst, C. B. Kendall, and J. Liang.

Impact of BovineSomatotropin (BST) on Dairy Produce
The use of bovine somatotropin (BST) in dairy herds has been shown to increase productivity levels. Bovine somatotropin is a biotechnology that, when injected in dairy cows, results in increased milk production levels anywhere from 10 to 40 percent (Kalter, et al.). Presently the injections are daily and have been shown to have a rather quick and dramatic increase in production levels
Localization of the relative phase via measurements
When two independently-prepared Bose-Einstein condensates are released from
their corresponding traps, the absorbtion image of the overlapping clouds
presents an interference pattern. Here we analyze a model introduced by
Javanainen and Yoo (J. Javanainen and S. M. Yoo, Phys. Rev. Lett. 76, 161
(1996)), who considered two atomic condensates described by plane waves
propagating in opposite directions. We present an analytical argument for the
measurement-induced breaking of the relative phase symmetry in this system,
demonstrating how the phase gets localized after a large enough number of
detection events.Comment: 8 pages, 1 figur
Optical Weak Link between Two Spatially Separate Bose-Einstein Condensates
Two spatially separate Bose-Einstein condensates were prepared in an optical
double-well potential. A bidirectional coupling between the two condensates was
established by two pairs of Bragg beams which continuously outcoupled atoms in
opposite directions. The atomic currents induced by the optical coupling depend
on the relative phase of the two condensates and on an additional controllable
coupling phase. This was observed through symmetric and antisymmetric
correlations between the two outcoupled atom fluxes. A Josephson optical
coupling of two condensates in a ring geometry is proposed. The continuous
outcoupling method was used to monitor slow relative motions of two elongated
condensates and characterize the trapping potential.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
Probabilistic cash flow-based optimal investment timing using two-color rainbow options valuation for economic sustainability appraisement
This research determines the optimal investment timing using real options valuation to support decision-making for economic sustainability assessment. This paper illustrates an option pricing model using the Black-Scholes model applied to a case project to understand the model performance. Applicability of the project to the model requires two Monte Carlo simulations to satisfy a Markov process and a Wiener process. The position of project developers is not only the seller of products, but it is also the buyer of raw materials. Real options valuation can be influenced by the volatility of cash outflow, as well as the volatility of cash inflow. This study suggests two-color rainbow options valuation to overcome this issue, which is demonstrated for a steel plant project. The asymmetric results of the case study show that cash outflow (put option) influences the value of the steel plant project more than cash inflow (call option) does of which the discussion of the results is referred to a sensitivity analysis. The real options valuation method proposed in this study contributes to the literature on applying the new model, taking into consideration that investors maximize project profitability for economic sustainable development. ? 2017 by the authors.111sciessciscopu
