    Studying internal and external magnetic fields in Japan using MAGSAT data

    Examination of the total intensity data of CHRONIT on a few paths over Japan and its neighboring sea shows MAGSAT is extremely useful for studying the local magnetic anomaly. In high latitudes, the signatures of field aligned currents are clearly recognized. These include (1) the persistent basic pattern of current flow; (2) the more intense currents in the summer hemisphere than in the winter hemisphere; (3) more fluctuations in current intensities in summer dawn hours; and (4) apparent dawn-dusk asymmetry in the field-aligned current intensity between the north and south polar regions

    Efforts continue in compiling tapes which contain vector and scalar data decimated at an interval of 0.5 sec, together with time and position data. A map of the total force field anomaly around Japan was developed which shows a negative magnetic anomaly in the Okhotsk Sea. Examination of vector residuals from the MGST model shows that the total force perturbation is almost ascribable to the perturbation parallel to the main geomagnetic field and that the contribution from the perturbation transverse to the main field to the total force perturbation is negligibly small. The influences of ionospheric current with equatorial electroject and of the magnetospheric field aligned current on the dawn-dusk asymmetry of daily geomagnetic variations are being considered. The total amount of electric current flowing through the plane of the Magsat orbit loop was calculated by direct application of Maxwell's equation. Results show that the total electric current is 1 to 5 ampheres, and the current direction is either sunward or antisunward

    Construction of a model of the regional magnetic field and investigation of the local magnetic anomalies and their origin were approaches used in attempts to study the crustal structure near Japan and its Antarctic bases. Spatial properties of the regional magnetic field and comparison of the regional model with that derived from MAGSAT data are discussed. Possible causes of the magnetic anomalies, and results of aeromagnetic surveys incorporating gravity and seismic data are explored. Ionospheric and magnetospheric contributions to geomagnetic variations, field-aligned currents, magnetic geomagnetic pulsations, and hydromagnetic waves by analysis of MAGSAT data are also examined

    Household mortgage demand: a study of the UK, Australia and Japan

    Households combine their personal savings and mortgage debt to finance their home purchases. In developed countries, mortgage debt is the largest debt on a household’s balance sheet and in these countries, the mortgage penetration rates are high. For the stability of the mortgage market and thereby the money market in an economy, it is important to understand households' mortgage demand decisions and riskiness of these borrowers. There are differences in mortgage systems among countries, which play an important role in determining the mortgage decisions that households make. These differences arise from the availability of types of mortgage instrument (adjustable versus fixed rate mortgages), length of fixed period for a fixed rate mortgage contracts, conditions of prepayment, tax treatment, lenders’ constraints related to repayment, loan to value ratio, foreclosure and personal bankruptcy laws etc. These differences impact borrowers' choice of mortgage contract and mortgage demand. This paper analyses the mortgage demand behaviour of households in the UK, Australia and Japan. Specific questions that have been asked relate to the factors that determine household mortgage demand, housing demand and loan to value ratio. Though the homeownership is a preferred tenure and the mortgages are 'recourse' loans, housing markets in these three countries operate in different mortgage market institutional structure. Results indicate that income elasticity of mortgage demand differ despite income elasticity of housing demand being similar. Mortgage institutions that pose constraints for borrowers also determine the extent of mortgage demand. Other factors such as demography, economic conditions have also played an important role in determining mortgage and housing demand

    Aquaporins: relevance to cerebrospinal fluid physiology and therapeutic potential in hydrocephalus

    The discovery of a family of membrane water channel proteins called aquaporins, and the finding that aquaporin 1 was located in the choroid plexus, has prompted interest in the role of aquaporins in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) production and consequently hydrocephalus. While the role of aquaporin 1 in choroidal CSF production has been demonstrated, the relevance of aquaporin 1 to the pathophysiology of hydrocephalus remains debated. This has been further hampered by the lack of a non-toxic specific pharmacological blocking agent for aquaporin 1. In recent times aquaporin 4, the most abundant aquaporin within the brain itself, which has also been shown to have a role in brain water physiology and relevance to brain oedema in trauma and tumours, has become an alternative focus of attention for hydrocephalus research. This review summarises current knowledge and concepts in relation to aquaporins, specifically aquaporin 1 and 4, and hydrocephalus. It also examines the relevance of aquaporins as potential therapeutic targets in hydrocephalus and other CSF circulation disorders
