Kondo Spin Screening Cloud in Two-dimensional Electron Gas with Spin-orbit Couplings
A spin-1/2 Anderson impurity in a semiconductor quantum well with Rashba and
Dresselhaus spin-orbit couplings is studied by using a variational wave
function method. The local magnetic moment is found to be quenched at low
temperatures. The spin-spin correlations of the impurity and the conduction
electron density show anisotropy in both spatial and spin spaces, which
interpolates the Kondo spin screenings of a conventional metal and of a surface
of three-dimensional topological insulators.Comment: accepted by the Journal of Physics: Condensed Matte
Association of common zoonotic pathogens with concentrated animal feeding operations
Animal farming has intensified significantly in recent decades, with the emergence of concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) in industrialized nations. The congregation of susceptible animals in CAFOs can lead to heavy environmental contamination with pathogens, promoting the emergence of hyper-transmissible, and virulent pathogens. As a result, CAFOs have been associated with emergence of highly pathogenic avian influenza viruses, hepatitis E virus, Escherichia coli O157:H7, Streptococcus suis, livestock-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, and Cryptosporidium parvum in farm animals. This has led to increased transmission of zoonotic pathogens in humans and changes in disease patterns in general communities. They are exemplified by the common occurrence of outbreaks of illnesses through direct and indirect contact with farm animals, and wide occurrence of similar serotypes or subtypes in both humans and farm animals in industrialized nations. Therefore, control measures should be developed to slow down the dispersal of zoonotic pathogens associated with CAFOs and prevent the emergence of new pathogens of epidemic and pandemic potential
Real-time motion data annotation via action string
Even though there is an explosive growth of motion capture data, there is still a lack of efficient and reliable methods to automatically annotate all the motions in a database. Moreover, because of the popularity of mocap devices in home entertainment systems, real-time human motion annotation or recognition becomes more and more imperative. This paper presents a new motion annotation method that achieves both the aforementioned two targets at the same time. It uses a probabilistic pose feature based on the Gaussian Mixture Model to represent each pose. After training a clustered pose feature model, a motion clip could be represented as an action string. Then, a dynamic programming-based string matching method is introduced to compare the differences between action strings. Finally, in order to achieve the real-time target, we construct a hierarchical action string structure to quickly label each given action string. The experimental results demonstrate the efficacy and efficiency of our method
Comparison of different measures for quantum discord under non-Markovian noise
Two geometric measures for quantum discord were recently proposed by Modi et
al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 080501 (2010)] and Dakic et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett.
105, 190502 (2010)]. We study the similarities and differences for total
quantum correlations of Bell-diagonal states using these two geometry-based
quantum discord and the original quantum discord. We show that, under
non-Markovian dephasing channels, quantum discord and one of the geometric
measures stay constant for a finite amount of time, but not the other geometric
measure. However, all the three measures share a common sudden change point.
Our study on critical point of sudden transition might be useful for keeping
long time total quantum correlations under decoherence.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures submitted for publicatio
Excitation of nonlinear ion acoustic waves in CH plasmas
Excitation of nonlinear ion acoustic wave (IAW) by an external electric field
is demonstrated by Vlasov simulation. The frequency calculated by the
dispersion relation with no damping is verified much closer to the resonance
frequency of the small-amplitude nonlinear IAW than that calculated by the
linear dispersion relation. When the wave number increases,
the linear Landau damping of the fast mode (its phase velocity is greater than
any ion's thermal velocity) increases obviously in the region of in which the fast mode is weakly damped mode. As a result, the deviation
between the frequency calculated by the linear dispersion relation and that by
the dispersion relation with no damping becomes larger with
increasing. When is not large, such as , the nonlinear IAW can be excited by the driver with the linear frequency
of the modes. However, when is large, such as
, the linear frequency can not be applied to exciting the
nonlinear IAW, while the frequency calculated by the dispersion relation with
no damping can be applied to exciting the nonlinear IAW.Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures, Accepted by POP, Publication in August 1
Hybrid quantum device based on NV centers in diamond nanomechanical resonators plus superconducting waveguide cavities
We propose and analyze a hybrid device by integrating a microscale diamond
beam with a single built-in nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center spin to a
superconducting coplanar waveguide (CPW) cavity. We find that under an ac
electric field the quantized motion of the diamond beam can strongly couple to
the single cavity photons via dielectric interaction. Together with the strong
spin-motion interaction via a large magnetic field gradient, it provides a
hybrid quantum device where the dia- mond resonator can strongly couple both to
the single microwave cavity photons and to the single NV center spin. This
enables coherent information transfer and effective coupling between the NV
spin and the CPW cavity via mechanically dark polaritons. This hybrid
spin-electromechanical de- vice, with tunable couplings by external fields,
offers a realistic platform for implementing quantum information with single NV
spins, diamond mechanical resonators, and single microwave photons.Comment: Accepted by Phys. Rev. Applie
Hydrostatic pressure effects on the static magnetism in Eu(FeCo)As
The effects of hydrostatic pressure on the static magnetism in
Eu(FeCo)As are investigated by complementary
electrical resistivity, ac magnetic susceptibility and single-crystal neutron
diffraction measurements. A specific pressure-temperature phase diagram of
Eu(FeCo)As is established. The structural phase
transition, as well as the spin-density-wave order of Fe sublattice, is
suppressed gradually with increasing pressure and disappears completely above
2.0 GPa. In contrast, the magnetic order of Eu sublattice persists over the
whole investigated pressure range up to 14 GPa, yet displaying a non-monotonic
variation with pressure. With the increase of the hydrostatic pressure, the
magnetic state of Eu evolves from the canted antiferromagnetic structure in the
ground state, via a pure ferromagnetic structure under the intermediate
pressure, finally to a possible "novel" antiferromagnetic structure under the
high pressure. The strong ferromagnetism of Eu coexists with the
pressure-induced superconductivity around 2 GPa. The change of the magnetic
state of Eu in Eu(FeCo)As upon the application
of hydrostatic pressure probably arises from the modification of the indirect
Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction between the Eu moments
tuned by external pressure.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figure
