    From Dirac semimetals to topological phases in three dimensions: a coupled wire construction

    Weyl and Dirac (semi)metals in three dimensions have robust gapless electronic band structures. Their massless single-body energy spectra are protected by symmetries such as lattice translation, (screw) rotation and time reversal. In this manuscript, we discuss many-body interactions in these systems. We focus on strong interactions that preserve symmetries and are outside the single-body mean-field regime. By mapping a Dirac (semi)metal to a model based on a three dimensional array of coupled Dirac wires, we show (1) the Dirac (semi)metal can acquire a many-body excitation energy gap without breaking the relevant symmetries, and (2) interaction can enable an anomalous Weyl (semi)metallic phase that is otherwise forbidden by symmetries in the single-body setting and can only be present holographically on the boundary of a four dimensional weak topological insulator.     Compressive Sensing for Feedback Reduction in MIMO Broadcast Channels

    We propose a generalized feedback model and compressive sensing based opportunistic feedback schemes for feedback resource reduction in MIMO Broadcast Channels under the assumption that both uplink and downlink channels undergo block Rayleigh fading. Feedback resources are shared and are opportunistically accessed by users who are strong, i.e. users whose channel quality information is above a certain fixed threshold. Strong users send same feedback information on all shared channels. They are identified by the base station via compressive sensing. Both analog and digital feedbacks are considered. The proposed analog & digital opportunistic feedback schemes are shown to achieve the same sum-rate throughput as that achieved by dedicated feedback schemes, but with feedback channels growing only logarithmically with number of users. Moreover, there is also a reduction in the feedback load. In the analog feedback case, we show that the propose scheme reduces the feedback noise which eventually results in better throughput, whereas in the digital feedback case the proposed scheme in a noisy scenario achieves almost the throughput obtained in a noiseless dedicated feedback scenario.     Causes, Effects, and Remedies in Conflict Management

    While workplace conflicts have been widely studied in the literature, this researchprovides a holistic view of the causes and effects of such, and how managers or amanagement can resolve the conflicts among their teams and organization througha detailed, multidimensional framework carried out on one of the biggest textilefirms of Pakistan. With an initial sample of 145 respondents, 37 questionnaireswere dropped because of invalid and incomplete answers; therefore, the studywas carried out on 108 respondents. Conflicts are a part of human nature, butmanagement should play an important role in dealing with these issues, as therecan be enormous chances of conflicts due to a diverse workforce. Conflict alsoresults in poor work performance and low productivity; therefore, it’s suggestedto create teams or groups which may encourage a competitive culture in theorganization. Additionally, a few remedies are identified, which may resolve someissues; managers must look at those techniques for a better culture.&nbsp

    Non-parabolicity of the conduction band of wurtzite GaN

    Using cyclotron resonance, we measure the effective mass, mm*, of electrons in AlGaN/GaN heterostructures with densities, n2D16×1012n_{2D}\sim 1-6\times10^{12}cm2^{-2}. From our extensive data, we extrapolate a band edge mass of (0.208±0.002)me(0.208\pm0.002) m_e. By comparing our mm* data with the results of a multi-band \textbf{k.p} calculation we infer that the effect of remote bands is essential in explaining the observed conduction band non-parabolicity (NP). Our calculation of polaron mass corrections -- including finite width and screening - suggests those to be negligible. It implies that the behavior of m(n2D)m*(n_{2D}) can be understood solely in terms of NP. Finally, using our NP and polaron corrections, we are able to reduce the large scatter in the published band edge mass values

    Fingerprint center point location using directional field

    This paper presents a reliable fingerprint center point (CP) location algorithm for the alignment of fingerprints to construct a shift invariant fingerprint recognition system. The proposed algorithm is based on Alteration Tracking (AT) and CP estimation (CPE). AT is proposed to extract a track that records the transition from one quantized direction to another. CPE is aimed to find the bending point with highest transition of direction from the transition track. This algorithm is tested against fingerprints captured from SAGEM MSO100 optical scanner and the second database from University of Bologna.     Knowledge of Driving Vehicle Licensing Agency guidelines among NHS doctors:A multicentre observational study

    Objectives: Over half of the UK population holds a driver's licence. The DVLA have produced guidelines to ensure drivers with medical conditions drive safely. Doctors should ensure that patients are given appropriate information and advice if they have a medical condition affecting their driving. We sought to evaluate doctors' knowledge of DVLA guidelines. Design: A 25-point questionnaire was designed from DVLA guidelines (‘The DVLA Questionnaire’). Five questions were included for each of neurology, cardiology, drug and alcohol abuse, visual, and respiratory disorders. Setting: Ealing Hospital, Northwick Park Hospital, Watford General Hospital, Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital and Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust. Participants: 140 UK doctors. Main outcome measures: Questionnaire scores assessing knowledge of DVLA guidelines in five specialty areas. Results: The median overall questionnaire score was 28%, interquartile range 20–36% and range 0–100% [Watford 28%, Leeds 30%, Norfolk and Norwich 36%, Ealing 30%, Northwick Park 28%]. There were no significant differences between the scores for each centre (p = 0.1332), Mean scores for specialty areas were: neurology 33.1%, standard deviation 22.1; cardiology 35.6%, standard deviation 26.9; drug and alcohol abuse 30.6%, standard deviation 23.8; visual disorders 33.9%, standard deviation 23.5 and respiratory disorders 20.3%, standard deviation 24.8; overall score 30.7%. There was no significant difference between the scores of the specialty areas (p = 0.4060). Conclusions: Knowledge of DVLA guidelines in our cohort was low. There is a need for increased awareness among hospital doctors through focused education on driving restrictions for common medical conditions. Improving physician knowledge in this area may help optimise patient safety

    Electron Scattering in AlGaN/GaN Structures

    We present data on mobility lifetime, τt\tau_t, quantum lifetime, τq\tau_q, and cyclotron resonance lifetime, τCR\tau_{CR}, of a sequence of high-mobility two-dimensional electron gases in the AlGaN/GaN system, covering a density range of 14.5×1012\sim1-4.5\times10^{12}cm2^{-2}. We observe a large discrepancy between τq\tau_q and τCR\tau_{CR} (τqτCR\tau_q\sim\tau_{CR}/6) and explain it as the result of density fluctuations of only a few percent. Therefore, only τCR\tau_{CR} --and not τq\tau_q -- is a reliable measure of the time between electron scattering events in these specimens. The ratio τt/τCR\tau_t / \tau_{CR} increases with increasing density in this series of samples, but scattering over this density range remains predominantly in the large-angle scattering regime

    A novel algorithm to form stable clusters in vehicular ad hoc networks on highways

    Abstract Clustering in vehicular ad hoc networks (VANET) is one of the control schemes used to make VANET global topology less dynamic. Many of the VANET clustering algorithms are derived from mobile ad hoc networks (MANET). However, VANET nodes are characterized by their high mobility, and the existence of VANET nodes in the same geographic proximity does not mean that they exhibit the same mobility patterns. Therefore, VANET clustering schemes should take into consideration the degree of the speed difference among neighboring nodes to produce relatively stable clustering structure. In this paper, we introduce a new clustering technique suitable for the VANET environment on highways with the aim of enhancing the stability of the network topology. This technique takes the speed difference as a parameter to create relatively stable cluster structure. We also developed a new multi-metric algorithm for cluster-head elections. A simulation was conducted to evaluate our method and compare it with the most commonly used clustering methods. The simulation results show that our technique provides more stable cluster structure on the locale scale which results in a more stable network structure on the global scale. The proposed technique reduces the average number of clusters changed per vehicle by 34-46%, and increases the average cluster lifetime by 20-48% compared to the existing techniques
