Heat Conduction and Magnetic Phase Behavior in Electron-Doped Ca_{1-x} La_x MnO_3(0 <= x <= 0.2)
Measurements of thermal conductivity (kappa) vs temperature are reported for
a series of Ca_{1-x} La_x MnO_3(0 <= x <= 0.2) specimens. For the undoped
(x=0), G-type antiferromagnetic compound a large enhancement of kappa below the
Neel temperature (T_N ~ 125 K) indicates a strong coupling of heat-carrying
phonons to the spin system. This enhancement exhibits a nonmonotonic behavior
with increasing x and correlates remarkably well with the small ferromagnetic
component of the magnetization reported previously [Neumeier and Cohn, Phys.
Rev. B 61 14319 (2000).] Magnetoelastic polaron formation appears to underly
the behavior of kappa and the magnetization at x <= 0.02.Comment: submitted to PRB; 4 pp., 4 Fig.'s, RevTex
Relationship between macroscopic physical properties and local distortions of low doping La{1-x}Ca{x}MnO3: an EXAFS study
A temperature-dependent EXAFS investigation of La{1-x}Ca{x}MnO3 is presented
for the concentration range that spans the ferromagnetic-insulator (FMI) to
ferromagnetic-metal (FMM) transition region, x = 0.16-0.22. The samples are
insulating for x = 0.16-0.2 and show a metal/insulator transition for x = 0.22.
All samples are ferromagnetic although the saturation magnetization for the 16%
Ca sample is only ~ 70% of the expected value at 0.4T. We find that the FMI
samples have similar correlations between changes in the local Mn-O distortions
and the magnetization as observed previously for the colossal magnetoresistance
(CMR) samples (0.2 < x < 0.5) - except that the FMI samples never become fully
magnetized. The data show that there are at least two distinct types of
distortions. The initial distortions removed as the insulating sample becomes
magnetized are small and provides direct evidence that roughly 50% of the Mn
sites have a small distortion/site and are magnetized first. The large
remaining Mn-O distortions at low T are attributed to a small fraction of
Jahn-Teller-distorted Mn sites that are either antiferromagnetically ordered or
unmagnetized. Thus the insulating samples are very similar to the behavior of
the CMR samples up to the point at which the M/I transition occurs for the CMR
materials. The lack of metallic conductivity for x <= 0.2, when 50% or more of
the sample is magnetic, implies that there must be preferred magnetized Mn
sites and that such sites do not percolate at these concentrations.Comment: 27 pages, 8 figures, to be submitted to Phys. Rev.
Atomistic modeling and experimental studies of radiation damage in monazite-type LaPO4 ceramics
We simulated the threshold displacement energies (Ed), the related displacement and defect formation probabilities, and the energy barriers in LaPO4 monazite-type ceramics. The obtained Ed values for La, P, O primary knock-on atoms (PKA) are 56eV, 75eV and 8eV, respectively. We found that these energies can be correlated with the energy barriers that separate the defect from the initial states. The Ed values are about twice the values of energy barriers, which is explained through an efficient dissipation of the PKA kinetic energy in the considered system. The computed Ed were used in simulations of the extent of radiation damage in La0.2Gd0.8PO4 solid solution, investigated experimentally. We found that this lanthanide phosphate fully amorphises in the ion beam experiments for fluences higher than ~1013 ions/cm2
Inhomogeneous magnetism in La-doped CaMnO3. (I) Nanometric-scale spin clusters and long-range spin canting
Neutron measurements on Ca{1-x}La{x}MnO3 (0.00 <= x <= 0.20) reveal the
development of a liquid-like spatial distribution of magnetic droplets of
average size ~10 Angstroms, the concentration of which is proportional to x
(one cluster per ~60 doped electrons). In addition, a long-range ordered
ferromagnetic component is observed for ~0.05 < x < ~0.14. This component is
perpendicularly coupled to the simple G-type antiferromagnetic (G-AFM)
structure of the undoped compound, which is a signature of a G-AFM + FM
spin-canted state. The possible relationship between cluster formation and the
stabilization of a long-range spin-canting for intermediate doping is
discussed.Comment: Submitted to Physical Review
Evidence for incommensurate spin fluctuations in Sr_2RuO_4
We report first inelastic neutron scattering measurements in the normal state
of Sr_2RuO_4 that reveal the existence of incommensurate magnetic spin
fluctuations located at . This
finding confirms recent band structure calculations that have predicted
incommensurate magnetic responses related to dynamical nesting properties of
its Fermi surface
Optimizing trade-offs among stakeholders in real-time bidding by incorporating multimedia metrics
Displaying banner advertisements (in short, ads) on webpages has usually been discussed as an Internet economics topic where a publisher uses auction models to sell an online user's page view to advertisers and the one with the highest bid can have her ad displayed to the user. This is also called \emph{real-time bidding} (RTB) and the ad displaying process ensures that the publisher's benefit is maximized or there is an equilibrium in ad auctions. However, the benefits of the other two stakeholders -- the advertiser and the user -- have been rarely discussed. In this paper, we propose a two-stage computational framework that selects a banner ad based on the optimized trade-offs among all stakeholders. The first stage is still auction based and the second stage re-ranks ads by considering the benefits of all stakeholders. Our metric variables are: the publisher's revenue, the advertiser's utility, the ad memorability, the ad click-through rate (CTR), the contextual relevance, and the visual saliency. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work that optimizes trade-offs among all stakeholders in RTB by incorporating multimedia metrics. An algorithm is also proposed to determine the optimal weights of the metric variables. We use both ad auction datasets and multimedia datasets to validate the proposed framework. Our experimental results show that the publisher can significantly improve the other stakeholders' benefits by slightly reducing her revenue in the short-term. In the long run, advertisers and users will be more engaged, the increased demand of advertising and the increased supply of page views can then boost the publisher's revenue
Structural and magnetic aspects of the metal insulator transition in CaSrRuO
The phase diagram of CaSrRuO has been studied by neutron
diffraction on powder and single-crystalline samples. The experiments reveal
antiferromagnetic order and structural distortions characterized by tilts and
rotations of the RuO-octahedra. There is strong evidence that the
structural details of the isovalent samples tune the magnetic as well as the
electronic behavior. In particular we observe for low Sr-concentration a metal
insulator transition associated with a structural change and magnetic ordering
The enhancement of phase separation aspect in electron doped manganite Ca0.8Sm0.16Nd0.04MnO3
The complex lanthanide doping of electron manganites results in enhancement
of various phase separation effects in physical properties of these compounds.
Selecting Ca0.8Sm0.16Nd0.04MnO3 as a model case we show that the first order
structural phase transition from paramagnetic semi-metallic phase into
anti-ferromagnetic semi-metallic phase at TS ~ 158 +- 4 K is marked by an
abrupt decrease in magnetization, a step like anomaly DL/L = 10-4 in thermal
expansion and large latent heat DQ = 610 J/mol. In a certain temperature range
below TS, the high field magnetization exhibits hysteretic metamagnetic
behavior due to field-induced first order transformation. ac-susceptibility,
magnetization and resistivity data suggest rather a non-uniform state in
Ca0.8Sm0.16Nd0.04MnO3 at low temperatures. The metal - insulator transition
occurs at TMI ~112 +- 3 K, accompanied by a step-like increase in
magnetization. These features could be ascribed to "sponging" of electrons from
neighboring anti-ferromagnetic matrix by clusters undergoing the ferromagnetic
ordering.Comment: submitted to J.Phys. Cond. Matte
Interplay of superexchange and orbital degeneracy in Cr-doped LaMnO3
We report on structural, magnetic and Electron Spin Resonance (ESR)
investigations in the manganite system LaMn_{1-x}Cr_{x}O_{3} (x<=0.5). Upon
Cr-doping we observe a reduction of the Jahn-Teller distortion yielding less
distorted orthorhombic structures. A transition from the Jahn-Teller distorted
O' to the pseudocubic O phase occurs between 0.3<x<0.4. A clear connection
between this transition and the doping dependence of the magnetic and ESR
properties has been observed. The effective moments determined by ESR seem
reduced with respect to the spin-only value of both Mn^{3+} and Cr^{3+} ions
Inelastic neutron scattering study of magnetic excitations in SrRuO
Magnetic excitations in \srruo ~ have been studied by inelastic neutron
scattering. The magnetic fluctuations are dominated by incommensurate peaks
related to the Fermi surface nesting of the quasi-one-dimensional - and
-bands. The shape of the incommensurate signal agrees well with RPA
calculations. At the incommensurate {\bf Q}-positions the energy spectrum
considerably softens upon cooling pointing to a close magnetic instability :
\srruo ~does not exhibit quantum criticality but is very close to it. -scaling may be fitted to the data for temperatures above 30 K. Below the
superconducting transition, the magnetic response at the nesting signal is not
found to change in the energy range down to 0.4meV.Comment: 11 pages 9 figure
