Combining Ability of Pod Yield and Related Traits of Groundnut ( Arachis hypogaea
A study was performed using 6×6 F1 diallel population without reciprocals to assess the mode of inheritance of pod yield and related traits in groundnut with imposed salinity stress. Heterosis was found for pod number and yield. Data on general and specific combining ability (gca and sca) indicated additive and nonadditive gene actions. The gca: sca ratios were much less than unity suggesting predominant role of nonadditive gene effects. Cultivars “Binachinabadam-2” and “Dacca-1” and mutant M6/25/64-82 had the highest, second highest, and third highest pod number, as well as gca values, respectively. These two cultivars and another mutant M6/15/70-19 also had the highest, second highest, and third highest pod yield, as well as gca values, respectively. Therefore, “Dacca-1”, “Binachinabadam-2”, M6/25/64-82, and M6/15/70-19 could be used as source of salinity tolerance. Cross combinations showing high sca effects arising from parents with high and low gca values for any trait indicate the influence of nonadditive genes on their expression. Parents of these crosses can be used for biparental mating or reciprocal recurrent selection for developing high yielding varieties. Crosses with high sca effects having both parents with good gca effects could be exploited by pedigree breeding to get transgressive segregants

Sitagliptin is a medication used to manage type-2 diabetes. The present study investigates the experimental and
theoretical results of Sitagliptin (SG). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were used to determine
optimized parameters at the B3LYP functional /6-31++G(d,p) basis set. In addition Time-dependent DFT is used
to compute excited states of SG and SG-Ag6 and predict UV spectra. The electronic properties of silver nano cages
containing SG have exhibited a notable enhancement. Natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis was also used to
determine charge transfer within the molecule and stabilization energy. Electronic properties such as molecular
electrostatic potential (MEP), frontier molecular orbital (FMO) analysis of SG and SG-Ag6 were investigated. The
chemical significance of SG has been discussed using electron localization function (ELF) and local orbital locator
functions (LOL) with contour images. Sitagliptin appears to have promise as a treatment for the chosen inhibitors,
according to the docking binding affinities and the formation of a significant amount of hydrogen bonds.

Cosmic coincidence problem and variable constants of physics
The standard model of cosmology is investigated using time dependent
cosmological constant and Newton's gravitational constant . The
total energy content is described by the modified Chaplygin gas equation of
state. It is found that the time dependent constants coupled with the modified
Chaplygin gas interpolate between the earlier matter to the later dark energy
dominated phase of the universe. We also achieve a convergence of parameter
, with minute fluctuations, showing an evolving . Thus our
model fairly alleviates the cosmic coincidence problem which demands

The impact of surveillance and control on highly pathogenic avian influenza outbreaks in poultry in Dhaka division, Bangladesh
In Bangladesh, the poultry industry is an economically and socially important sector, but it is persistently threatened by the effects of H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza. Thus, identifying the optimal control policy in response to an emerging disease outbreak is a key challenge for policy-makers. To inform this aim, a common approach is to carry out simulation studies comparing plausible strategies, while accounting for known capacity restrictions. In this study we perform simulations of a previously developed H5N1 influenza transmission model framework, fitted to two separate historical outbreaks, to assess specific control objectives related to the burden or duration of H5N1 outbreaks among poultry farms in the Dhaka division of Bangladesh. In particular, we explore the optimal implementation of ring culling, ring vaccination and active surveillance measures when presuming disease transmission predominately occurs from premises-to-premises, versus a setting requiring the inclusion of external factors. Additionally, we determine the sensitivity of the management actions under consideration to differing levels of capacity constraints and outbreaks with disparate transmission dynamics. While we find that reactive culling and vaccination policies should pay close attention to these factors to ensure intervention targeting is optimised, across multiple settings the top performing control action amongst those under consideration were targeted proactive surveillance schemes. Our findings may advise the type of control measure, plus its intensity, that could potentially be applied in the event of a developing outbreak of H5N1 amongst originally H5N1 virus-free commercially-reared poultry in the Dhaka division of Bangladesh
Is gender encoded in the smile? A computational framework for the analysis of the smile driven dynamic face for gender recognition
YesAutomatic gender classification has become a topic of great interest to the visual computing research community in recent
times. This is due to the fact that computer-based automatic gender recognition has multiple applications including, but not
limited to, face perception, age, ethnicity, identity analysis, video surveillance and smart human computer interaction. In this
paper, we discuss a machine learning approach for efficient identification of gender purely from the dynamics of a person’s
smile. Thus, we show that the complex dynamics of a smile on someone’s face bear much relation to the person’s gender.
To do this, we first formulate a computational framework that captures the dynamic characteristics of a smile. Our dynamic
framework measures changes in the face during a smile using a set of spatial features on the overall face, the area of the
mouth, the geometric flow around prominent parts of the face and a set of intrinsic features based on the dynamic geometry
of the face. This enables us to extract 210 distinct dynamic smile parameters which form as the contributing features for
machine learning. For machine classification, we have utilised both the Support Vector Machine and the k-Nearest Neighbour
algorithms. To verify the accuracy of our approach, we have tested our algorithms on two databases, namely the CK+ and the
MUG, consisting of a total of 109 subjects. As a result, using the k-NN algorithm, along with tenfold cross validation, for
example, we achieve an accurate gender classification rate of over 85%. Hence, through the methodology we present here,
we establish proof of the existence of strong indicators of gender dimorphism, purely in the dynamics of a person’s smile
Role of Operon aaoSo-mutT in Antioxidant Defense in Streptococcus oligofermentans
Previously, we have found that an insertional inactivation of aaoSo, a gene encoding L-amino acid oxidase (LAAO), causes marked repression of the growth of Streptococcus oligofermentans. Here, we found that aaoSo and mutT, a homolog of pyrophosphohydrolase gene of Escherichia coli, constituted an operon. Deletion of either gene did not impair the growth of S. oligofermentans, but double deletion of both aaoSo and mutT was lethal. Quantitative PCR showed that the transcript abundance of mutT was reduced for 13-fold in the aaoSo insertional mutant, indicating that gene polarity derived from the inactivation of aaoSo attenuated the expression of mutT. Enzymatic assays were conducted to determine the biochemical functions of LAAO and MutT of S. oligofermentans. The results indicated that LAAO functioned as an aminoacetone oxidase [47.75 nmol H2O2 (min·mg protein)–1]; and MutT showed the pyrophosphohydrolase activity, which removed mutagens such as 8-oxo-dGTP. Like paraquat, aaoSo mutations increased the expression of SOD, and addition of aminoacetone (final concentration, 5 mM) decreased the mutant’s growth by 11%, indicating that the aaoSo mutants are under ROS stress. HPLC did reveal elevated levels of cytoplasmic aminoacetone in both the deletion and insertional gene mutants of aaoSo. Electron spin resonance spectroscopy showed increased hydroxyl radicals in both types of aaoSo mutant. This demonstrated that inactivation of aaoSo caused the elevation of the prooxidant aminoacetone, resulting the cellular ROS stress. Our study indicates that the presence of both LAAO and MutT can prevent endogenous metabolites-generated ROS and mutagens. In this way, we were able to determine the role of the aaoSo-mutT operon in antioxidant defense in S. oligofermentans
Perceived Barriers to Healthy Eating and Physical Activity among Adolescents in Seven Arab Countries: A Cross-Cultural Study
Objective. To highlight the perceived personal, social, and environmental barriers to healthy eating and physical activity among Arab adolescents. Method. A multistage stratified sampling method was used to select 4698 students aged 15–18 years (2240 males and 2458 females) from public schools. Seven Arab counties were included in the study, namely, Algeria, Jordan, Kuwait, Libya, Palestine, Syria, and the United Arab Emirates. Self-reported questionnaire was used to list the barriers to healthy eating and physical activity facing these adolescents. Results. It was found that lack of information on healthy eating, lack of motivation to eat a healthy diet, and not having time to prepare or eat healthy food were the main barriers to healthy eating among both genders. For physical activity, the main barriers selected were lack of motivation to do physical activity, less support from teachers, and lack of time to do physical activity. In general, females faced more barriers to physical activity than males in all countries included. There were significant differences between males and females within each country and among countries for most barriers. Conclusion. Intervention programmes to combat obesity and other chronic noncommunicable diseases in the Arab world should include solutions to overcome the barriers to weight maintenance, particularly the sociocultural barriers to practising physical activity
Mutational Specificity of γ-Radiation-Induced Guanine−Thymine and Thymine−Guanine Intrastrand Cross-Links in Mammalian Cells and Translesion Synthesis Past the Guanine−Thymine Lesion by Human DNA Polymerase η†
ABSTRACT: Comparative mutagenesis of γ- or X-ray-induced tandem DNA lesions G[8,5-Me]T and T[5-Me,8]G intrastrand cross-links was investigated in simian (COS-7) and human embryonic (293T) kidney cells. For G[8,5-Me]T in 293T cells, 5.8 % of progeny contained targeted base substitutions, whereas 10.0 % showed semitargeted single-base substitutions. Of the targeted mutations, the G f T mutation occurred with the highest frequency. The semitargeted mutations were detected up to two bases 5 ′ and three bases 3 ′ to the cross-link. The most prevalent semitargeted mutation was a C f T transition immediately 5 ′ to the G[8,5-Me]T cross-link. Frameshifts (4.6%) (mostly small deletions) and multiple-base substitutions (2.7%) also were detected. For the T[5-Me,8]G cross-link, a similar pattern of mutations was noted, but the mutational frequency was significantly higher than that of G[8,5-Me]T. Both targeted and semitargeted mutations occurred with a frequency of ∼16%, and both included a dominant G f T transversion. As in 293T cells, more than twice as many targeted mutations in COS cells occurred in T[5-Me,8]G (11.4%) as in G[8,5-Me]T (4.7%). Also, the level of semitargeted single-base substitutions 5 ′ to the lesion was increased and 3 ′ to the lesion decreased in T[5-Me,8]G relative to G[8,5-Me]T in COS cells. It appeared that the majority of the base substitutions at or near the cross-links resulted from incorporation of dAMP opposite the template base, in agreement with the so-called “A-rule”.
