Low-frequency method for magnetothermopower and Nernst effect measurements on single crystal samples at low temperatures and high magnetic fields
We describe an AC method for the measurement of the longitudinal (Sxx) and
transverse (Sxy, i.e. Nernst) thermopower of mm-size single crystal samples at
low temperatures (T30 T). A low-frequency (33
mHz) heating method is used to increase the resolution, and to determine the
temperature gradient reliably in high magnetic fields. Samples are mounted
between two thermal blocks which are heated by a sinusoidal frequency f0 with a
p/2 phase difference. The phase difference between two heater currents gives a
temperature gradient at 2f0. The corresponding thermopower and Nernst effect
signals are extracted by using a digital signal processing method due. An
important component of the method involves a superconducting link, YBa2Cu3O7+d
(YBCO), which is mounted in parallel with sample to remove the background
magnetothermopower of the lead wires. The method is demonstrated for the quasi
two-dimensional organic conductor a-(BEDT-TTF)2KHg(SCN)4, which exhibits a
complex, magnetic field dependent ground state above 22.5 T at low
temperatures.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, 15 reference
Nonparametric tests of conditional treatment effects
We develop a general class of nonparametric tests for treatment effects conditional on covariates. We consider a wide spectrum of null and alternative hypotheses regarding conditional treatment effects, including (i) the null hypothesis of the conditional stochastic dominance between treatment and control groups; ii) the null hypothesis that the conditional average treatment effect is positive for each value of covariates; and (iii) the null hypothesis of no distributional (or average) treatment effect conditional on covariates against a one-sided (or two-sided) alternative hypothesis. The test statistics are based on L1-type functionals of uniformly consistent nonparametric kernel estimators of conditional expectations that characterize the null hypotheses. Using the Poissionization technique of GinĆ© et al. (2003), we show that suitably studentized versions of our test statistics are asymptotically standard normal under the null hypotheses and also show that the proposed nonparametric tests are consistent against general fixed alternatives. Furthermore, it turns out that our tests have non-negligible powers against some local alternatives that are nāĀ½ different from the null hypotheses, where n is the sample size. We provide a more powerful test for the case when the null hypothesis may be binding only on a strict subset of the support and also consider an extension to testing for quantile treatment effects. We illustrate the usefulness of our tests by applying them to data from a randomized, job training program (LaLonde, 1986) and by carrying out Monte Carlo experiments based on this dataset

The Cauchy problem for metric-affine f(R)-gravity in presence of a Klein-Gordon scalar field
We study the initial value formulation of metric-affine f(R)-gravity in
presence of a Klein-Gordon scalar field acting as source of the field
equations. Sufficient conditions for the well-posedness of the Cauchy problem
are formulated. This result completes the analysis of the same problem already
considered for other sources.Comment: 6 page
