Nonadiabatic generation of coherent phonons
The time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) is the leading
computationally feasible theory to treat excitations by strong electromagnetic
fields. Here the theory is applied to coherent optical phonon generation
produced by intense laser pulses. We examine the process in the crystalline
semimetal antimony (Sb), where nonadiabatic coupling is very important. This
material is of particular interest because it exhibits strong phonon coupling
and optical phonons of different symmetries can be observed. The TDDFT is able
to account for a number of qualitative features of the observed coherent
phonons, despite its unsatisfactory performance on reproducing the observed
dielectric functions of Sb. A simple dielectric model for nonadiabatic coherent
phonon generation is also examined and compared with the TDDFT calculations.Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures. This is prepared for a special issue of Journal

A universal form of slow dynamics in zero-temperature random-field Ising model
The zero-temperature Glauber dynamics of the random-field Ising model
describes various ubiquitous phenomena such as avalanches, hysteresis, and
related critical phenomena. Here, for a model on a random graph with a special
initial condition, we derive exactly an evolution equation for an order
parameter. Through a bifurcation analysis of the obtained equation, we reveal a
new class of cooperative slow dynamics with the determination of critical
exponents.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
Scale-free patterns at a saddle-node bifurcation in a stochastic system
We demonstrate that scale-free patterns are observed in a spatially extended
stochastic system whose deterministic part undergoes a saddle-node bifurcation.
Remarkably, the scale-free patterns appear only at a particular time in
relaxation processes from a spatially homogeneous initial condition. We
characterize the scale-free nature in terms of the spatial configuration of the
exiting time from a marginal saddle where the pair annihilation of a saddle and
a node occurs at the bifurcation point. Critical exponents associated with the
scale-free patterns are determined by numerical experiments.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figure
Theoretical analysis for critical fluctuations of relaxation trajectory near a saddle-node bifurcation
A Langevin equation whose deterministic part undergoes a saddle-node
bifurcation is investigated theoretically. It is found that statistical
properties of relaxation trajectories in this system exhibit divergent
behaviors near a saddle-node bifurcation point in the weak-noise limit, while
the final value of the deterministic solution changes discontinuously at the
point. A systematic formulation for analyzing a path probability measure is
constructed on the basis of a singular perturbation method. In this
formulation, the critical nature turns out to originate from the neutrality of
exiting time from a saddle-point. The theoretical calculation explains results
of numerical simulations.Comment: 18pages, 17figures.The version 2, in which minor errors have been
fixed, will be published in Phys. Rev.
Measurements of galactic cosmic ray shielding with the CRaTER instrument
[1] The Cosmic Ray Telescope for the Effects of Radiation (CRaTER) instrument aboard the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter has been measuring energetic charged particles from the galactic cosmic rays (GCRs) and solar particle events in lunar orbit since 2009. CRaTER includes three pairs of silicon detectors, separated by pieces of tissue-equivalent plastic that shield two of the three pairs from particles incident at the zenith-facing end of the telescope. Heavy-ion beams studied in previous ground-based work have been shown to be reasonable proxies for the GCRs when their energies are sufficiently high. That work, which included GCR simulations, led to predictions for the amount of dose reduction that would be observed by CRaTER. Those predictions are compared to flight data obtained by CRaTER in 2010–2011
