    Students’ Discourse Strategies in a Classroom Debate Performance

    Conducting a debate as one activity in a speaking class might provide opportunities for students to practice their exploratory talk as the benefits of performing this activity include developing an objectivity toward controversial questions and the ability to reason logically. In order to achieve its goals, students need to own communicative competences, which are categorized into grammatical competence, discourse competence, sociolinguistic competence and strategic competence. This study concerns with the students’ use of discourse strategies as this shows their ability in connecting sentences or utterances to produce meaningful units of utterances. In addition, this strategy is required to deliver thought and comprehend ideas as it would require complete thought happening before and after the utterances to gain meaningful representation of the message. Therefore, the focus of this study is to find out types of discourse strategies the students employ during their debate performance in Speaking for Academic Purposes subject offered at the Department of English in a state university at East Java.     Keywords: communicative competence, discourse strategies, debat

    Developing English Course Book For Second Grade Kindergarteners

    This study is aimed to develop English course-book for second grade of kindergarten. The method used in this study is Research and Development (R&D). The steps of this study consist of needs analysis, material development, expert validation, first revision, try out, second revision, and final product. The result of this study indicates that the developed product is applicable for young learners. Additionally, the product is attractive and fun to be used.Penelitian ini bertujuan mengembangkan buku pelajaran Bahasa Inggris bagi siswa tingkat dua Taman Kanak-kanak. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah Research and Development (R&D). Langkah-langkah yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini melingkupi analisis kebutuhan, pengembangan materi, validasi ahli, revisi pertama, uji coba, revisi kedua, dan hasil produk.     This present study intends to develop reading materials for physical education students\u27 of STKIP PGRI Jombang as an effort in improving students\u27 English ability especially on reading skill. The research and development procedures of this present study are obtained by adaptation the combination models of Borg and Gall (1983), Dick and Carey (2001) and Hyland (2003). It is adapted simplifier into four stages, those are: (1) need analysis; (2) developing material; (3) validation; (4) revisions. The material developed was based on the real field condition which is suited to the students\u27 and the lecturer\u27s need. It is also considered by the syllabus used by the lecturer.Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengembangkan materi reading untuk mahasiswa jurusan pendidikan jasmani dan kesehatan di STKIP PGRI Jombang sebagi salah satu USAha untuk meningkatkan kemampuan bahasa Inggris mahasiswa khususnya pada reading skill.     This research aims to documented the myth, legend, and fairy tale in Jombang and developing the oral folklore to be child story which contain of character education. In this case, used qualitative method. Based on results study getting nine story's from a few of data site interpretation which include north Jombang, west, south, and middle. From the nine story's, then documented and described on result study. Thus, it is can be reference of giving character education for kid. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendokumentasikan mite, legenda, dan dongeng di Jombang dan mengemas folklor lisan tersebut menjadi cerita anak bermuatan pendidikan karakter. Dalam hal ini metode yang digunakan adalah deskriptif kualitatif. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian didapatkan sembilan cerita dari beberapa lokasi pengambilan data yang meliputi Jombang utara, barat, selatan dan tengah. Dari sembilan cerita tersebut didokumentasikan dan dideskripsikan pada temuan hasil penelitian.     A Discourse of Doctoral Qualifying Exam: a Self Observation and Reflection

    This study, concern itself with a discourse of doctoral qualifying exam, an underresearched area of doctoral studies in the Indonesian context, concerns itself with a discourse of doctoral qualifying exam. The data for this study were drawn from naturalistic observations taking place during the doctoral ventures of the present researcher. Another methodological characteristic of the present study is the employment of selective self-reflections on the personal narratives of the researcher. The researcher attended some ten doctoral qualifying exams at one graduate school of one of Indonesian universities. The study arrived at two conspicuous features characterizing doctoral qualifying exams. Results of some comparative observations taking place in Thailand, Australia, and the United Sates are also presented to help clarify the characterization of the doctoral qualifying exams in the Indonesian university.     The Common Move and Step in Research Article Abstracts

    Move and step are components that can provide effective contribution to overall communicative purpose in research article. This study aims to investigate the moves and steps in 48 abstracts publication from cross-disciplinary study under UM journal website. The design of this study is qualitative research. Swales et.al (2014) and Hyland's (2000) models are used to identify moves and steps occurrence. The result shows that the majority of abstracts use M3 (46 abstracts), M4 (44 abstracts), M2 (40 abstracts). Authors mostly apply step 1 in M2 (40 times), step 1 in M4 (42 times), and step 3 in M3 (35 times).Abstrak: Moves and Steps adalah komponen yang dapat memberikan kontribusi efektif untuk keseluruhan tujuan komunikasi dalam artikel penelitian. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menyelidiki langkah-langkah dan langkah-langkah dalam 48 publikasi abstrak dari studi lintas disiplin di situs web jurnal UM.     Improving Student's Speaking Fluency Through Small Group Discussion Strategy

    Penelitian ini mengkaji tentang bagaimana implementasi strategi diskusi kelompok kecil meningkatkan kemampuan kelancaran berbicara siswa kelas intermediate di Ma'had Al-Jami'ah UIN Maliki Malang. Penelitian ini dilakukan karena ditemukannya masalah pembelajaran pada pra penelitian, yakni kelancaran berbicara mereka masih 3.5 di dalam komunikasi dan 3.53 dalam menjelaskan. Mereka belum aktif dalam komunikasi dan menjelaskan sesuatu. Selain itu, mereka belum semuanya berpartisipasi selama proses pembelajaran. Penelitian ini menggunakan penelitan tindakan kelas menggunakan model teori Kemmis dan Mc Taggart dengan tahapan : perencanaan, pelaksanaan, observasi dan refleksi. Temuan dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa di siklus 1, kelancara berbicara mereka menjadi 3.70 di dalam komunikasi dan 3.78 dalam presentasi. Di siklus 2, kelancaran mereka meningkat menjadi 4.16 dalam komunikasi dan 4.08 dalam mejelaskan sesuatu. Hal demikian dilakukakan dengan memperbaiki materi untuk mendukung jalannya diskusi. Ini menunjukkan bahwa diskusi kelompok kecil bisa meningkatkan kelancaran berbicara mereka
