Time-frequency analysis of signals using support adaptive Hermite-Gaussian expansions

Cataloged from PDF version of article.Since Hermite–Gaussian (HG) functions provide an orthonormal basis with the most compact time– frequency supports (TFSs), they are ideally suited for time–frequency component analysis of finite energy signals. For a signal component whose TFS tightly fits into a circular region around the origin, HG function expansion provides optimal representation by using the fewest number of basis functions. However, for signal components whose TFS has a non-circular shape away from the origin, straight forward expansions require excessively large number of HGs resulting to noise fitting. Furthermore, for closely spaced signal components with non-circular TFSs, direct application of HG expansion cannot provide reliable estimates to the individual signal components. To alleviate these problems, by using expectation maximization (EM) iterations, we propose a fully automated pre-processing technique which identifies and transforms TFSs of individual signal components to circular regions centered around the origin so that reliable signal estimates for the signal components can be obtained. The HG expansion order for each signal component is determined by using a robust estimation technique. Then, the estimated components are post-processed to transform their TFSs back to their original positions. The proposed technique can be used to analyze signals with overlapping components as long as the overlapped supports of the components have an area smaller than the effective support of a Gaussian atom which has the smallest time-bandwidth product. It is shown that if the area of the overlap region is larger than this threshold, the components cannot be uniquely identified. Obtained results on the synthetic and real signals demonstrate the effectiveness for the proposed time–frequency analysis technique under severe noise cases. © 2012 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved

Atom clusters and vibrational excitations in chemically-disordered Pt357Fe

Inelastic nuclear resonant scattering spectra of Fe-57 atoms were measured on crystalline alloys of Pt3Fe-57 that were chemically disordered, partially ordered, and L1(2) ordered. Phonon partial density of states curves for Fe-57 were obtained from these spectra. Upon disordering, about 10% of the spectral intensity underwent a distinct shift from 25 to 19 meV. This change in optical modes accounted for most of the change of the vibrational entropy of disordering contributed by Fe atoms, which was (+0.10 +/- 0.03) k(B) (Fe atom)(-1). Prospects for parametrizing the vibrational entropy with low-order cluster variables were assessed. To calculate the difference in vibrational entropy of the disordered and ordered alloys, the clusters must be large enough to account for the abundances of several of the atom configurations of the first-nearest-neighbor shell about the Fe-57 atoms

Influence of Magnetism on Phonons in CaFe2As2 Via Inelastic X-ray Scattering

In the iron pnictides, the strong sensitivity of the iron magnetic moment to the arsenic position suggests a significant relationship between phonons and magnetism. We measured the phonon dispersion of several branches in the high temperature tetragonal phase of CaFe2As2 using inelastic x-ray scattering on single-crystal samples. These measurements were compared to ab initio calculations of the phonons. Spin polarized calculations imposing the antiferromagnetic order present in the low temperature orthorhombic phase dramatically improve agreement between theory and experiment. This is discussed in terms of the strong antiferromagnetic correlations that are known to persist in the tetragonal phase.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures; added additional information and references about spin fluctuation

Multiple Evidence Combination in Image retrieval: Diogenes Searches for People on the Web

Abstract In this work, we examine evidence combination mechAnisms for classifying multimedia information. In particular, we examine linear and Dempster-Shafer methods of evidence combination in the context of identifying personal images on the World Wide Web. An automatic web search engine named Diogenes 1 searches the web for personal images and combines different pieces of evidence for identification. The sources of evidence consist of input from face detection/recognition and text/HTML analysis modules. A degree of uncertainty is involved with both of these sources. Diogenes automatically determines the uncertainty locally for each retrieval and uses this information to set a relative significance for each evidence. To our knowledge, Diogenes is the first image search engine using Dempster-Shafer evidence combination based on automatic object recognition and dynamic local uncertainty assessment. In our experiments Diogenes comfortably outperformed some well known commercial and research prototype image search engines for celebrity image queries

Dynamics of iron atoms across the pressure-induced Invar transition in Pd_3Fe

The ^(57)Fe phonon partial density of states (PDOS) in L1_2-ordered Pd_3Fe was studied at high pressures by nuclear resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (NRIXS) measurements and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The NRIXS spectra showed that the stiffening of the ^(57)Fe PDOS with decreasing volume was slower from 12 to 24 GPa owing to the pressure-induced Invar transition in Pd_3Fe, with a change from a high-moment ferromagnetic (FM) state to a low-moment (LM) state observed by nuclear forward scattering. Force constants obtained from fitting to a Born–von Kármán model showed a relative softening of the first-nearest-neighbor (1NN) Fe-Pd longitudinal force constants at the magnetic transition. For the FM low-pressure state, the DFT calculations gave a PDOS and 1NN longitudinal force constants in good agreement with experiment, but discrepancies for the high-pressure LM state suggest the presence of short-range magnetic order
