This study was conducted to investigate the effect of dietary cumin (Cuminum cyminum) powder (CP) as a feed additive on growth performance and disease resistance during first-feeding of Mozamique tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus). Five isonitrogenous (40% crude protein) and isocaloric (18.9 kj g-1) diets were formulated to contain 0 (control), 0.5, 1, 1.5, and 2.0% CP. In a 45-day feeding trial, 15 plastic tanks (21 L) were stocked with 40 fry (0.012 ± 0.001 g) each. After feeding experiment, fish were infected with Streptococcus iniae and mortalities were recorded. The second-order polynomial regression indicated that a dietary CP level of 1.14% provided the best survival rate challenge infection with S. iniae, growth performance and feed utilization. In conclusion, CP can be used as growth promoter to improve feed utilization and weight gain in tilapia fry, and it can be also used as an antimicrobial agent during first-feeding of O. mossambicus. Therefore, CP can be suggested as an alternative to antibiotics in controlling streptococcal disease in tilapia culture

This study was performed to determine the optimum level of soybean meal diets for two banded seabream for growth performance, nutrient utilization, body composition and serum biochemistry. Two banded seabream were fed five experimental diets which were formulated replace fish meal by soybean meal at 0, 20, 30, 40 and 50%. Up to 40% of dietary fish meal was successfully replaced with no growth depression. Whole body composition of two banded seabream was not affected by soybean meal inclusion level. Total protein, triglyceride and total cholesterol of fish fed the SM50 diets were significantly lower compared to fish fed the soybean free diet. On the other hand, serum glucose level significantly increased as dietary soybean meal inclusion increased. Results showed that 40% fish meal can be replaced in diets for the two banded seabream by defatted soybean meal. Further studies to determine the inclusion level of soybean meal more than 40% with amino acid or enzyme supplementation are needed

Abstract Unrefined peanut oil was evaluated as a partial or total replacement of fish oil in diets for common carp (Cyprinus carpio) and growth performance, feed utilization, and biochemical status were examined. Three isonitrogenous (34.5% protein) and isolipidic (12.8% lipid) experimental diets were fed to satiation to triplicate groups of 10 common carp (29.57±0.44 g), each, for 60 days. At the end of the experiment, total replacement of the fish oil by peanut oil did not affect growth, feed utilization, or ash, protein, or moisture content in the carp body. Hepatosomatic and viscerasomatic indices increased as the content of peanut oil increased but did not significantly differ between treatments (p<0.05). Serum total protein, globulin, and triglyceride significantly increased as the content of peanut oil increased while glucose decreased. There was no definable trend in cholersterol. In conclusion, replacement of 50% dietary fish oil with unrefined peanut oil had no adverse effect on the growth performance, biochemical parameters, or general health (survival) of common carps

In this study, immunostimulant effects of dietary supplementation of tetra (Cotinus coggygria) extract on the non-specific immune response, and protection against Aeromonas hydrophila infection in Koi carp (Cyprinus carpio) were investigated. Koi were fed with tetra extract incorporated diets containing 0 (Control), 0.5 (Te1), 1.0 (Te2) and 1.5 g/kg (Te3), for 30 days. At the end of the study there were no differences in the values of hematological parameters between treatments. However, red blood cell counts were significantly increased (P<0.05) in Te2 group. Nitroblue tetrazolium activity was higher in all the treatment groups compared to the control, and highest values were recorded in Te3, Te1 and Te2 groups, respectively. Lysozyme and myeloperoxidase activity of the treatment groups was significantly enhanced compared to control (P<0.05), and higher values of lysozyme and myeloperoxidase activity were seen in Te3, Te2 and Te1 groups, respectively. In the challenge study with A. hydrophila (108 CFU/ml) administered after 30 days of feeding where the Koi received Te3, Te2, Te1, and control diets, they had 13.3, 20.0, 26.7, and 40.0% mortality, respectively. Tetra extract supplemented diets enhanced the immunological responses and triggered the immune system of Koi carp against A. hydrophila infection

*İnanan, Burak Evren ( Aksaray, Yazar )The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of essential oil extracted from bergamot (Citrus bergamia) peel on growth performance and health status of European sea bass juveniles (5.10 + 0.05 g). Test diets supplemented with 0.0%, 0.5%, 1.0% and 2.0% bergamot peel oil (BPO0, BPO0.5, BPO1 and BPO2) were fed to experimental fish for 60 days. At the end of the experiment, the best growth performance was obtained in the BPO0.5 and BPO1 groups (p < .05). No significances were found for haematological parameters including red blood cell count, haematocrit and haemoglobin concentration at the end of the feeding experiment. There were significant differences between the total protein, cholesterol, alkaline phosphatase and glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (p < .05) between the BPO0.5 and BPO1 supplemented groups and the control group with no BPO addition. The addition of BPO showed significant differences in immune parameters such as lysozyme activity, total myeloperoxidase content, superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase activity between BPO0 and BPO supplemented groups (p < .05). It might be concluded that dietary addition of 0.5%-1% BPO could increase the growth performance and feed utilization with improved health status in sea bass juveniles...

The present study was conducted for 88 days to evaluate the effect of dietary Tribulus terrestris supplementation on growth performance, feed utilization, and hematological, immunological, and biochemical indices of Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus. A total of 144 Nile tilapia, average body weight 2.61±0.35 g, were divided into four experimental treatments. There were three replicates of each treatment. Four isonitrogenous (40% CP) and isolipidic (10% CL) experimental diets contained T. terrestris extract at levels of 0, 200, 400 and 600 mg/kg respectively. Growth performance and feed utilization of Nile tilapia were significantly higher (p0.05). Hematocrit, hemoglobin, mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), and myeloperoxidase variables were not significantly affected by herb extract (p>0.05). However, mean corpuscular volume (MCV) value and lysozyme activity increased with increasing T. terrestris extract (p<0.05). Serum albumin, total protein, and triglyceride levels were not affected by T. terrestris extract. Serum globulin and glucose levels increased and cholesterol levels decreased in Nile tilapia fed with herbal supplemented diets. The results of the present study suggest that Nile tilapia fed diets containing at least 400 mg/kg T. terrestris extract enhanced growth performance, feed utilization, hematological, immunological, and biochemical indices

Effects of different herbal extracts on the growth and immune defense of fish were researched in the last decade. The aim of this study was to determine the dietary effects of thyme (Thymus vulgaris), rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) and fenugreek (Trigonella foenum graecum) as a feed additive on haematology, innate immune response, and disease resistance of tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus). In total 228 healthy fish tilapia were divided into four groups (57 fish in one group) and fed diets supplemented with thyme, rosemary and fenugreek at levels of 1%, respectively; fish in the control group were fed diet without any spices. Fish were fed ad libitum three times a day for 45 days. All fish of the experimental groups significantly (P P P > 0.05) changed during the whole experiment. After 45 days of feeding, fish were injected intraperitoneally with 100 μl of Streptococcus iniae (8 × 108 colony forming unit). The cumulative mortality was 22%, 27% and 31% in fish receiving diets supplemented with 1% thyme, rosemary and fenugreek, respectively, compared to 61% mortality in the control group. The results indicate that all three supplements used improved the haematological status, non-specific immune response and disease resistance of tilapia against S. iniae; this is the first similar study

In this study, effects of different concentrations (0, 5, 10, 20, 30, and 40 mg/L) of glyphosate-based herbicide (GBH) on Nile tilapia (Oreochromis nikticus) were investigated after a 14-day of exposure. After determination of LC50 value, effects of GBH on hematological and serum biochemical parameters in blood samples, DNA damage, lipid pemxidation and catalase activity in liver tissues, expression levels of antioxidant enzyme-related genes (SOD, CAT, GPx, and GST) and immune-related genes (TGF-beta, TGF-alpha and IL1-beta) were evaluated. The LC50 value has been found as 44.4 mg/L for GBH. GBH exposure at all concentrations caused alterations in blood parameters. GBH induced oxidative stress in liver and DNA damage in blood. Antioxidant enzyme-related genes were significantly up-regulated to suppress oxidative stress. On the other hand, the expression levels of immunerelated genes decreased in fish exposure to particularly >= 20 mg/L GBH
