    Price Momentum and Idiosyncratic Volatility

    Get PDF
We find that returns to momentum investing are higher among high idiosyncratic volatility (IVol) stocks, especially high IVol losers. Higher IVol stocks also experience quicker and larger reversals. The findings are consistent with momentum profits being attributable to underreaction to firm-specific information and with IVol limiting arbitrage of the momentum effect. We also find a positive time-series relation between momentum returns and aggregate IVol. Given the long-term rise in IVol, this result helps explain the persistence of momentum profits since Jegadeesh and Titman’s (1993) study

The Predictive Content of Aggregate Analyst Recommendations

Using more than 350,000 sell-side analyst recommendations from January 1994 to August 2006, this paper examines the predictive content of aggregate analyst recommendations. We find that changes in aggregate analyst recommendations forecast future market excess returns after controlling for macroeconomic variables that have been shown to influence market returns. Similarly, changes in industry-aggregated analyst recommendations predict future industry returns. Changes in aggregate analyst recommendations also predict one-quarter-ahead aggregate earnings growth. Overall, our results suggest that analyst recommendations contain market- and industry-level information about future returns and earnings

Modulation recognition of low-SNR UAV radar signals based on bispectral slices and GA-BP neural network

In this paper, we address the challenge of low recognition rates in existing methods for radar signals from unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) with low signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs). To overcome this challenge, we propose the utilization of the bispectral slice approach for accurate recognition of complex UAV radar signals. Our approach involves extracting the bispectral diagonal slice and the maximum bispectral amplitude horizontal slice from the bispectrum amplitude spectrum of the received UAV radar signal. These slices serve as the basis for subsequent identification by calculating characteristic parameters such as convexity, box dimension, and sparseness. To accomplish the recognition task, we employ a GA-BP neural network. The significant variations observed in the bispectral slices of different signals, along with their robustness against Gaussian noise, contribute to the high separability and stability of the extracted bispectral convexity, bispectral box dimension, and bispectral sparseness. Through simulations involving five radar signals, our proposed method demonstrates superior performance. Remarkably, even under challenging conditions with an SNR as low as −3 dB, the recognition accuracy for the five different radar signals exceeds 90%. Our research aims to enhance the understanding and application of modulation recognition techniques for UAV radar signals, particularly in scenarios with low SNRs

Cognitive effects of long-term residence in the Antarctic environment

This study examined whether prolonged residence in the Antarctica had a significant impact on cognitive performance. Participants were members of the 24th and 25th Chinese National Antarctic Research Expeditions. Cognitive performance was measured with tests designed to evaluate short-term recognition, memory search and spatial cognition, measured four times: January, March, April, and June 2010. Age was controlled as a covariate, and data were analyzed using repeated-measures ANOVA. The results revealed that subjects’ short-term memory and recognition ability remained stable, while 82% of team members exhibited improved scores on a spatial cognitive ability test. These findings have important implications for furthering our understanding of cognitive functioning in extreme environments

BackgroundThe prognostic value of Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) in breast cancer remains to be determined. Therefore, this paper aims to conduct a meta-analysis to assess the correlation between TLR4 and clinicopathological indicators as well as survival outcomes in breast cancer.MethodRelated literature retrieved from Embase, PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) and China Wanfang. The search deadline is April 12, 2023. The outcome measures employed in the study comprised hazard ratio (HR), odds ratio (OR), and 95% confidence interval (CI) as effective indices. The data analysis was conducted using Stata 17.0 software.ResultsHigh TLR4 expression was associated with lymph node metastasis (OR=2.077, 95%CI=1.160-3.717, P= 0.014), tumor size (≥2 cm) (OR=2.194, 95%CI= 1.398-3.445, P= 0.001), PR expression (OR = 0.700, 95% CI = 0.505–0.971, P= 0.033), and clinical stage (OR = 3.578, 95%CI= 3.578-5.817, P<0.05), but not with histological grade (95%CI= 0.976-1.735, P= 0.072), ER expression (OR = 1.125, 95% CI = 0.492–2.571,P= 0.781), and HER-2 status (OR = 1.241, 95% CI = 0.733–2.101, P = 0.422). In addition, TLR4 overexpression was an independent prognostic indicator of DFS (HR= 1.480, 95%CI= 1.028- 2.130, p= 0.035) in breast cancer patients, but not related to OS(HR=1.730, 95%CI= 0.979-3.057, P= 0.059).ConclusionsFrom our main analysis results, high TLR4 expression is associated with lymph node metastasis, larger tumor size (≥2 cm), later clinical stage, negative PR expression and shorter DFS, suggesting poor prognosis in breast cancer patients

High Performance Composite Polymer Electrolytes Doped With Spherical-Like and Honeycomb Structural Li0.1Ca0.9TiO3 Particles

    Get PDF
The spherical-like and honeycomb structural Li0.1Ca0.9TiO3 particles are prepared by spray drying combined with following calcination confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS). The poly (vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (P(VDF-HFP))-based composite polymer electrolytes (CPEs) modified with the particles are fabricated by phase inversion and activation processes. The characterization results show that the as-prepared CPE membranes possess the smoothest surface and most abundant micropores with the lowest crystallinity with adding the particles into the polymer matrix, which results in high ionic conductivity (3.947 mS cm−1) and lithium ion transference number (0.4962) at ambient temperature. The interfacial resistance can be quickly stabilized at 508 Ω after 5 days storage and the electrochemical working window is up to 5.2 V. Moreover, the mechanical strength of the membranes gains significant improvement without lowering the ionic conductivity. Furthermore, the assembled coin cell can also deliver high discharge specific capacity and preserve steady cycle performance at different current densities. Those outstanding properties may be ascribed to the distinctive structure of the tailored spherical-like and honeycomb structural Li0.1Ca0.9TiO3 particles, which can guarantee the desirable CPEs as a new promising candidate for the polymer electrolyte
