    Anti-thrombotic and anti-tumor effect of water extract of caulis of Sargentodoxa cuneata (Oliv) Rehd et Wils (Lardizabalaceae) in animal models

    Purpose: To investigate the anti-thrombosis and anti-tumor effect of the water extract of the caulis of Sargentodoxa cuneata (Oliv.) Rehd. et Wils. (WCSW) in rat and mouse models.Methods: WCSW extract was prepared and the main constituents were determined by high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC). The acute toxicity of the extract was determined in mice. Platelet aggregation in rat platelet-rich plasma (PRP) was examined to evaluate the effect of the extract on platelet function. Thereafter, the cytotoxic activity of WCSW on HL60, A549, S180 and H22 cells was determined by 3-(4,5-Dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. In vivo antitumor effect of WCSW was further evaluated on H22 cells transplanted in mice, while the expression of caspase-3, caspase-9, Bcl-2 and Bax proteins were assayed by Western blot analysis.Results: Protocatechuic acid, rhodiola glucoside and chlorogenic acid were identified as the main constituents of WCSW. Platelet aggregation was significantly inhibited by treatment with the extract at concentrations of 1, 5 and 10 mg/mL. WCSW also showed significant inhibitory effect on HL60, A549, S180 and H22 cells in vitro with half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50 value of 321.9, 285.0, 130.3 and 76.1 μg/mL, respectively. Furthermore, WCSW exhibited obvious anti-tumor effect on H22 transplanted tumor in vivo. After treatment with WCSW, caspase-3, caspase-9 and Bax were significantly (p < 0.05) up-regulated, whereas Bcl-2 was significantly (p < 0.05) down-regulated in the tumor tissues.Conclusion: WCSW possesses significant antithrombosis and anti-tumor effect, and therefore, has the potentials to be developed into effective drugs for clinical treatment of cancer and thrombosis diseases.Keywords: Sargentodoxa cuneata, Anti-thrombosis, Anti-tumor, Platelet aggregation, Apoptosis, Caspase, Protocatechuic acid, Rhodiola glucoside, Chlorogenic aci

    The quantum solvation, adiabatic versus nonadiabatic, and Markovian versus non-Markovian nature of electron transfer rate processes

    In this work, we revisit the electron transfer rate theory, with particular interests in the distinct quantum solvation effect, and the characterizations of adiabatic/nonadiabatic and Markovian/non-Markovian rate processes. We first present a full account for the quantum solvation effect on the electron transfer in Debye solvents, addressed previously in J. Theore. & Comput. Chem. {\bf 5}, 685 (2006). Distinct reaction mechanisms, including the quantum solvation-induced transitions from barrier-crossing to tunneling, and from barrierless to quantum barrier-crossing rate processes, are shown in the fast modulation or low viscosity regime. This regime is also found in favor of nonadiabatic rate processes. We further propose to use Kubo's motional narrowing line shape function to describe the Markovian character of the reaction. It is found that a non-Markovian rate process is most likely to occur in a symmetric system in the fast modulation regime, where the electron transfer is dominant by tunneling due to the Fermi resonance.Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures, submitted to J.     Breastfeeding is critically important to maternal and child health in the United States. Examining the relationship between breastfeeding outcomes and state policies requires multidisciplinary efforts to link data from various sources. This article describes an integrated dataset that was used to understand the relationship between participation in a nutrition assistance program and low-income children\u27s breastfeeding outcomes [1]. This dataset merged public health information from the National Immunization Surveys Data from 2006 to 2016 and matching state policy data from the Correlates of State Policy Project (CSPP), the U.S. Department of Agriculture/Economic Research Services (USDA/ERS) Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) Policy Index, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), and the Census Bureau. The integrated dataset compiles variables in breastfeeding outcome, child\u27s and mother\u27s socio-demographic characteristics, and state-level policy measures, including SNAP participation rates, SNAP policy indices, unemployment rates, and Children\u27s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) enrollment rates. This multidisciplinary dataset included information on a total of 219,904 children with 98 variables

    The neural basis of responsibility attribution in decision-making

    Social responsibility links personal behavior with societal expectations and plays a key role in affecting an agent's emotional state following a decision. However, the neural basis of responsibility attribution remains unclear. In two previous event-related brain potential (ERP) studies we found that personal responsibility modulated outcome evaluation in gambling tasks. Here we conducted a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study to identify particular brain regions that mediate responsibility attribution. In a context involving team cooperation, participants completed a task with their teammates and on each trial received feedback about team success and individual success sequentially. We found that brain activity differed between conditions involving team success vs. team failure. Further, different brain regions were associated with reinforcement of behavior by social praise vs. monetary reward. Specifically, right temporoparietal junction (RTPJ) was associated with social pride whereas dorsal striatum and dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) were related to reinforcement of behaviors leading to personal gain. The present study provides evidence that the RTPJ is an important region for determining whether self-generated behaviors are deserving of praise in a social context
