    Numerous studies have shown that social media marketing strategies have positive impacts on the long-term financial performance of firms. However, whether short-term marketing campaigns have any influence on firm revenue remains unknown. This paper examines data from Singles’ Day, the world’s largest shopping event, revealing that firms’ social media efforts have a positive impact on product sales. Furthermore, we find that the two social media effort measures generally thought to have positive impacts on a firm’s long-term financial performance, richness and intensity, have no significant influence on the success of a firm’s short-term marketing campaign. Instead, relevance shows significant and positive impacts. Moreover, we compare the effects of social media marketing yields from company-owned accounts with those of employee-owned accounts, finding that employee-owned accounts have better marketing effects than company-owned ones

    I Know It\u27s You: Touch Behavioral Characteristics Recognition on Smartphone Based on Pattern Password

    In recent years, pattern password has been widely used for user authentication on smartphones and other mobile devices in addition to the traditional password protection approach. However, pattern password authentication mechanism is incapable of protecting users from losses when a user\u27s login credential information is stolen. We propose an identity verification scheme based on user’s touching behaviors when inputting a pattern password on the smartphone screen. By exploiting the biometrical features, such as position, pressure, size, and time when a user inputs a pattern password to a smartphone, the proposed user verification mechanism can validate whether the user is the true owner of the smartphone. We adopted fuzzy logic, artificial neural network, and support vector machine, to build classifiers, using the behavioral data collected from 10 users. The experimental results show that all the three algorithms have significant recognition capacity, and the fuzzy logic algorithm is the best one with its false acceptance rate and false rejection rate as 4.7% and 4.468% respectively

    DualTable: A Hybrid Storage Model for Update Optimization in Hive

    Hive is the most mature and prevalent data warehouse tool providing SQL-like interface in the Hadoop ecosystem. It is successfully used in many Internet companies and shows its value for big data processing in traditional industries. However, enterprise big data processing systems as in Smart Grid applications usually require complicated business logics and involve many data manipulation operations like updates and deletes. Hive cannot offer sufficient support for these while preserving high query performance. Hive using the Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS) for storage cannot implement data manipulation efficiently and Hive on HBase suffers from poor query performance even though it can support faster data manipulation.There is a project based on Hive issue Hive-5317 to support update operations, but it has not been finished in Hive's latest version. Since this ACID compliant extension adopts same data storage format on HDFS, the update performance problem is not solved. In this paper, we propose a hybrid storage model called DualTable, which combines the efficient streaming reads of HDFS and the random write capability of HBase. Hive on DualTable provides better data manipulation support and preserves query performance at the same time. Experiments on a TPC-H data set and on a real smart grid data set show that Hive on DualTable is up to 10 times faster than Hive when executing update and delete operations.Comment: accepted by industry session of ICDE201

    Spatial Distribution of Glomalin-related Soil Proteins in Coniferous and Broadleaf mixed Temperate Forest

    Glomalin-related soil protein (GRSP), as an important component of soil organic carbon (SOC) pool, is a glycoprotein produced by the hyphae of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), which play a vital role in carbon and nutrient cycling in forest ecosystem. Here we investigated the spatial distribution of GRSP in plant community of the dominated species not associated with AMF based on a typical coniferous and broad-leaved temperate forest in Mt. Changbai, Northeastern China. Spatial distribution of GRSP including easily extractable GRSP (EEG) and total GRSP (TG) is represented by Moran’s I on different soil depth among seven soil layers of 0-5 cm, 5-10 cm, 10-20 cm, 20-30 cm, 30-50 cm, 50-70 cm and 70-100 cm. The concentrations of EEG and TG decreased with the increase of soil depth according to a logarithmic function. The Moran’s I coefficient of GRSP was negative in all soil layers except TG in 20-30 cm and 50-70 cm soil layers. When EEG and TG were considered, the Moran’s I coefficient was positive in majority of soil layers within the separation distance of less than 4 m but in soil layers of 10-20 cm and 20-30 cm for EEG and in 30-50 cm for TG. The largest Moran’s I coefficient including EEG and TG was observed in the soil layer of 5-10 cm. The spatial distribution of GRSP was discrete in typical coniferous and broad-leaved temperate forest, and was affected by mycorrhizal colonization rate, soil organic carbon and total nitrogen

    Long Noncoding RNA SNHG16 Promotes Cell Proliferation by Sponging MicroRNA-205 and Upregulating ZEB1 Expression in Osteosarcoma

    Background/Aims: Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been a research hotspot, as they play important roles in tumor development. However, their expression pattern and biological function in osteosarcoma have not yet been clarified. Methods: Differentially expressed lncRNAs in osteosarcoma and paracarcinoma tissues were identified by screening an lncRNA microarray, and candidate lncRNAs were verified by quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR). A series of bioinformatics and molecular biological methods were adopted to investigate the interaction among lncRNA, microRNA (miRNA), and miRNA target genes during the development and occurrence of osteosarcoma. Cell viability was measured using a Cell Counting Kit-8 assay. Results: Chip microarray screening combined with the validation of differentially expressed candidate lncRNAs showed that the lncRNA small nucleolar RNA host gene 16 (SNHG16) had the largest fold change. SNHG16 was highly expressed in osteosarcoma tissues and cell lines, and its downregulation led to the suppressed proliferation of osteosarcoma cells. Further investigations revealed that SNHG16 could upregulate zinc finger E-box-binding homeobox 1 (ZEB1) expression by acting as an endogenous sponge of miR-205. Moreover, rescue assays proved that the effects of SNHG16 on the proliferation of osteosarcoma cells were dependent on miR-205. Conclusion: SNHG16 can significantly enhance the proliferation of osteosarcoma cells. In addition, SNHG16, miR-205, and ZEB1 interact in a common pathway during the development and occurrence of osteosarcoma, providing novel targets for intervention in the treatment of osteosarcoma

    Semantic representation for visual reasoning

    In the field of visual reasoning, image features are widely used as the input of neural networks to get answers. However, image features are too redundant to learn accurate characterizations for regular networks. While in human reasoning, abstract description is usually constructed to avoid irrelevant details. Inspired by this, a higher-level representation named semantic representation is introduced in this paper to make visual reasoning more efficient. The idea of the Gram matrix used in the neural style transfer research is transferred here to build a relation matrix which enables the related information between objects to be better represented. The model using semantic representation as input outperforms the same model using image features as input which verifies that more accurate results can be obtained through the introduction of high-level semantic representation in the field of visual reasoning

    Palmitic acid-modified GnRH-Th epitope peptide immunocastration vaccine (W/O/W adjuvant) can effectively ensure the castration and reduce the smelly smell in boars

    IntroductionRecent studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) in inhibiting testicular growth and development in male animals to achieve castration while improving the meat quality of various livestock species, including cattle, sheep, goats, and pigs.MethodsIn this research, a GnRH-Th vaccine was synthesized using the Fmoc solid-phase synthesis technique, and the T helper (Th) antigen was modified with palmitic acid to improve its efficacy. The vaccine was then coated with a water-in-oil-in-water adjuvant to improve stability and safety. After passing safety and stability tests, the vaccine was administered to 13-week-old boars.ResultsThe results showed that it was stable, safe, and effective for up to 15 months. Moreover, the vaccine did not negatively affect the growth rate and body weight of the pigs. The palmitic acid-modified “GnRH-Th epitope peptide immunocastration vaccine (Water-in-Oil-in-Water (W/O/W)) effectively reduced the testosterone concentration and achieved castration. The concentration of androstenone and skatole hormones significantly decreased, leading to improved meat quality in the boars. The boars were then slaughtered at 33 weeks of age, and the results showed that the meat quality of the vaccinated boars was superior to that of the non-vaccinated control group (p < 0.05).DiscussionThis study demonstrated that GnRH can safely and effectively achieve immune castration in boars after coupling T cell epitopes, palmitic acid modification and W-O-W coating. Provide a better method for the further development of GnRH and the realization of animal welfare

    Exploring the interaction between renewables and energy storage for zero-carbon electricity systems

    Many countries have set ambitious targets to achieve zero-carbon electricity systems by the Mid-21st Century. In their pathways, the renewable mix and the energy storage mix have been considered as two important facets. Current literature mostly focuses on how the storage mix is affected by the renewable mix, but few studied the inverse impact and the dynamic interaction between the storage and renewable mixes. We, therefore, developed an electricity system optimisation model with hourly resolution to investigate how the interaction between renewable and storage mixes could accelerate the decarbonisation in future 30 years. This study considered the decarbonisation roadmap in the UK designed by the National Grid with variable factors such as cost structure of renewables and storages, annual investment budget, and load growth. Our research finds that short-duration energy storages with duration time at 6–8 h are preferred for providing cheap and rapid ramping power to meet the daily fluctuation in the early stage (2020–2030) of the decarbonisation process. In the late stage of retiring fossil fuels (2040–2050), high-share wind energy plus with long-duration storages (with duration time longer than 38 h) can solve the problem of great-quantity and long-lasting energy shortage caused by renewables, thereby achieving high-renewable penetration.</p

    Whole transcriptome analysis reveals non-coding RNA's competing endogenous gene pairs as novel form of motifs in serous ovarian cancer

    Publisher Copyright: © 2022The non-coding RNA (ncRNA) regulation appears to be associated to the diagnosis and targeted therapy of complex diseases. Motifs of non-coding RNAs and genes in the competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) network would probably contribute to the accurate prediction of serous ovarian carcinoma (SOC). We conducted a microarray study profiling the whole transcriptomes of eight human SOCs and eight controls and constructed a ceRNA network including mRNAs, long ncRNAs, and circular RNAs (circRNAs). Novel form of motifs (mRNA-ncRNA-mRNA) were identified from the ceRNA network and defined as non-coding RNA's competing endogenous gene pairs (ceGPs), using a proposed method denoised individualized pair analysis of gene expression (deiPAGE). 18 cricRNA's ceGPs (cceGPs) were identified from multiple cohorts and were fused as an indicator (SOC index) for SOC discrimination, which carried a high predictive capacity in independent cohorts. SOC index was negatively correlated with the CD8+/CD4+ ratio in tumour-infiltration, reflecting the migration and growth of tumour cells in ovarian cancer progression. Moreover, most of the RNAs in SOC index were experimentally validated involved in ovarian cancer development. Our results elucidate the discriminative capability of SOC index and suggest that the novel competing endogenous motifs play important roles in expression regulation and could be potential target for investigating ovarian cancer mechanism or its therapy.Peer reviewe
