Dynamics of Overhauser Field under nuclear spin diffusion in a quantum dot

The coherence of electron spin can be significantly enhanced by locking the Overhauser field from nuclear spins using the nuclear spin preparation. We propose a theoretical model to calculate the long time dynamics of the Overhauser field under intrinsic nuclear spin diffusion in a quantum dot. We obtain a simplified diffusion equation that can be numerically solved and show quantitatively how the Knight shift and the electron-mediated nuclear spin flip-flop affect the nuclear spin diffusion. The results explain several recent experimental observations, where the decay time of Overhauser field is measured under different configurations, including variation of the external magnetic field, the electron spin configuration in a double dot, and the initial nuclear spin polarization rate.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure

Sequencing of folding events in Go-like proteins

We have studied folding mechanisms of three small globular proteins: crambin (CRN), chymotrypsin inhibitor 2 (CI2) and the fyn Src Homology 3 domain (SH3) which are modelled by a Go-like Hamiltonian with the Lennard-Jones interactions. It is shown that folding is dominated by a well-defined sequencing of events as determined by establishment of particular contacts. The order of events depends primarily on the geometry of the native state. Variations in temperature, coupling strengths and viscosity affect the sequencing scenarios to a rather small extent. The sequencing is strongly correlated with the distance of the contacting aminoacids along the sequence. Thus α\alpha-helices get established first. Crambin is found to behave like a single-route folder, whereas in CI2 and SH3 the folding trajectories are more diversified. The folding scenarios for CI2 and SH3 are consistent with experimental studies of their transition states.Comment: REVTeX, 12 pages, 11 EPS figures, J. Chem. Phys (in press

A Dispersive Analysis on the f0(600)f_0(600) and f0(980)f_0(980) Resonances in γγπ+π,π0π0\gamma\gamma\to\pi^+\pi^-, \pi^0\pi^0 Processes

We estimate the di-photon coupling of f0(600)f_0(600), f0(980)f_0(980) and f2(1270)f_2(1270) resonances in a coupled channel dispersive approach. The f0(600)f_0(600) di-photon coupling is also reinvestigated using a single channel TT matrix for ππ\pi\pi scattering with better analyticity property, and it is found to be significantly smaller than that of a qˉq\bar qq state. Especially we also estimate the di-photon coupling of the third sheet pole located near KˉK\bar KK threshold, denoted as f0III(980)f_0^{III}(980). It is argued that this third sheet pole may be originated from a coupled channel Breit-Wigner description of the f0(980)f_0(980) resonance.Comment: 24 pages and 13 eps figures. Automatic C-Plane Detection in Pelvic Floor Transperineal Volumetric Ultrasound

© 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG. Transperineal volumetric ultrasound (US) imaging has become routine practice for diagnosing pelvic floor disease (PFD). Hereto, clinical guidelines stipulate to make measurements in an anatomically defined 2D plane within a 3D volume, the so-called C-plane. This task is currently performed manually in clinical practice, which is labour-intensive and requires expert knowledge of pelvic floor anatomy, as no computer-aided C-plane method exists. To automate this process, we propose a novel, guideline-driven approach for automatic detection of the C-plane. The method uses a convolutional neural network (CNN) to identify extreme coordinates of the symphysis pubis and levator ani muscle (which define the C-plane) directly via landmark regression. The C-plane is identified in a postprocessing step. When evaluated on 100 US volumes, our best performing method (multi-task regression with UNet) achieved a mean error of 6.05 mm and 4.81 and took 20 s. Two experts blindly evaluated the quality of the automatically detected planes and manually defined the (gold standard) C-plane in terms of their clinical diagnostic quality. We show that the proposed method performs comparably to the manual definition. The automatic method reduces the average time to detect the C-plane by 100 s and reduces the need for high-level expertise in PFD US assessment

Models for Minimax Stochastic Linear Optimization Problems with Risk Aversion

We propose a semidefinite optimization (SDP) model for the class of minimax two-stage stochastic linear optimization problems with risk aversion. The distribution of second-stage random variables belongs to a set of multivariate distributions with known first and second moments. For the minimax stochastic problem with random objective, we provide a tight SDP formulation. The problem with random right-hand side is NP-hard in general. In a special case, the problem can be solved in polynomial time. Explicit constructions of the worst-case distributions are provided. Applications in a production-transportation problem and a single facility minimax distance problem are provided to demonstrate our approach. In our experiments, the performance of minimax solutions is close to that of data-driven solutions under the multivariate normal distribution and better under extremal distributions. The minimax solutions thus guarantee to hedge against these worst possible distributions and provide a natural distribution to stress test stochastic optimization problems under distributional ambiguity.Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and TechnologyNational University of Singapore. Mapping the Electromagnetic Near-Field Enhancements of Gold Nanocubes

    Get PDF
International audienceWe imaged and quantitatively characterized electromagnetic hot spots near the surfaces of plasmon resonant gold nanocubes. The strongest fields are localized at the nanocube corners as compared to those on the sides. The near-field enhancement on the surface of the cube was imaged as a function of incident polarization, leading to information on the localization of fields on specific regions on the surface. We found that the field intensity drops dramatically when the nanocube corner is slightly tilted with respect to the incident laser polarization. This dramatic dependence on angle was verified by electrodynamics simulations. These results will enable the use of gold nanocubes in field enhancement applications and refractive-index sensing

Coarse grained description of the protein folding

We consider two- and three-dimensional lattice models of proteins which were characterized previously. We coarse grain their folding dynamics by reducing it to transitions between effective states. We consider two methods of selection of the effective states. The first method is based on the steepest descent mapping of states to underlying local energy minima and the other involves an additional projection to maximally compact conformations. Both methods generate connectivity patterns that allow to distinguish between the good and bad folders. Connectivity graphs corresponding to the folding funnel have few loops and are thus tree-like. The Arrhenius law for the median folding time of a 16-monomer sequence is established and the corresponding barrier is related to easily identifiable kinetic trap states.Comment: REVTeX, 9 pages, 15 EPS figures, to appear in Phys. Energy landscapes, supergraphs, and "folding funnels" in spin systems

Dynamical connectivity graphs, which describe dynamical transition rates between local energy minima of a system, can be displayed against the background of a disconnectivity graph which represents the energy landscape of the system. The resulting supergraph describes both dynamics and statics of the system in a unified coarse-grained sense. We give examples of the supergraphs for several two dimensional spin and protein-related systems. We demonstrate that disordered ferromagnets have supergraphs akin to those of model proteins whereas spin glasses behave like random sequences of aminoacids which fold badly.Comment: REVTeX, 9 pages, two-column, 13 EPS figures include

Market based approaches for food safety and animal health interventions in smallholder pig systems: the case of Vietnam

    Get PDF
Food safety and animal health concerns place rising burdens on smallholder pig production in Viet Nam, both in terms of negatively affecting livelihoods and profitability as well as reducing consumer confidence in pork. While reducing the incidence of pig disease and improving the safety of pork products are potentially important public goods, it is critical to take into account the tradeoffs between improved animal health and food safety outcomes and their associated costs
