    Satellite galaxies' drag on field stars in the Milky Way

    With Gaia EDR3 data, velocity dispersion of Milky Way field stars around satellite galaxies have been investigated. We have fitted velocity dispersion against distance to satellite galaxy and found the gradient of velocity dispersion is related to the mass of satellite galaxy. With order-of-magnitude approximations, a linear correlation has been fitted between the mass of satellite galaxy and gradient of velocity dispersion caused by its gravitational drag. Though our result is an observational qualitative result, it shows better relation could be obtained with more observations in the future.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figure

    Back to the Starting Point: on the Simulation of Initial Magnetic Fields and Spin Periods of Non-accretion Pulsars

    Neutron stars (NSs) play essential roles in modern astrophysics. Magnetic fields and spin periods of newborn (zero age) NSs have large impact on the further evolution of NSs, which are however poorly explored in observation due to the difficulty of finding newborn NSs. In this work, we aim to infer the magnetic fields and spin periods (Bi and Pi) of zero-age NSs from the observed properties of NS population. We select non-accretion NSs (NANSs) whose evolution is solely determined by magnetic dipole radiation.     Recent Advances in Biomarkers for Parkinson’s Disease

    Parkinson’s disease (PD) is one of the common progressive neurodegenerative disorders with several motor and non-motor symptoms. Most of the motor symptoms may appear at a late stage where most of the dopaminergic neurons have been already damaged. In order to provide better clinical intervention and treatment at the onset of disease, it is imperative to find accurate biomarkers for early diagnosis, including prodromal diagnosis and preclinical diagnosis. At the same time, these reliable biomarkers can also be utilized to monitor the progress of the disease. In this review article, we will discuss recent advances in the development of PD biomarkers from different aspects, including clinical, biochemical, neuroimaging and genetic aspects. Although various biomarkers for PD have been developed so far, their specificity and sensitivity are not ideal when applied individually. So, the combination of multimodal biomarkers will greatly improve the diagnostic accuracy and facilitate the implementation of personalized medicine

    Assessing bilateral ankle proprioceptive acuity in stroke survivors:An exploratory study

    BACKGROUND: Bilateral proprioception deficits were reported in stroke survivors. However, whether bilateral proprioception deficits exist in the ankle joint after stroke was unclear. Ankle proprioception is a significant predictor of balance dysfunction after stroke, and previous studies to date are lacking appropriate evaluation methods. OBJECTIVES: We want to determine whether the active movement extent discrimination apparatus (AMEDA) is a reliable tool for assessing ankle proprioceptive acuity in stroke survivors and the presence of deficits in ankle proprioception on the affected and unaffected sides in patients after stroke. METHODS: Bilateral ankle proprioception was assessed in 20 stroke patients and 20 age-matched healthy controls using AMEDA. Test-retest reliability was assessed using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). RESULTS: The ICC in the affected and unaffected sides was 0.713 and 0.74, respectively. Analysis of variance revealed significant deficits in ankle proprioception in subacute stroke survivors vs. healthy controls (F = 2.719, p = 0.045). However, there were no significant differences in proprioception acuity scores between the affected and unaffected sides in patients after stroke (F = 1.14, p = 0.331). CONCLUSIONS: Stroke survivors had bilateral deficits in ankle proprioceptive acuity during active movements compared with age-matched healthy controls, underscoring the need to evaluate these deficits on both sides of the body and develop effective sensorimotor rehabilitation methods for this patient population.     A rare case of schizophrenia coexistence with antiphospholipid syndrome, β-thalassemia, and monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance

    A patient with schizophrenia who was treated with chlorpromazine developed lupus anticoagulant (LA) and antiphospholipid syndrome (APS). On protein electrophoresis, a monoclonal immunoglobulin A peak was seen in this patient, defining a condition of monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance. Additionally, β-thalassemia was diagnosed with the CD41-42 genotype. This condition is extremely rare, particularly in patients with schizophrenia and APS. We present a case of a patient with schizophrenia and secondary APS who had a positive LA, a significantly prolonged activated partial thromboplastin time, endogenous coagulation factor deficiency and inhibitor, no bleeding, and an unexpected finding of β-thalassemia and monoclonal IgA.     Factors Associated With Dyskinesia in Parkinson's Disease in Mainland China

    Background and Objectives: Studies examining the risk factors for dyskinesia in Parkinson's disease (PD) have been inconsistent, and racial differences exist. Since there have been no systematic studies of the characteristics of dyskinesia in the Mainland Chinese population, we sought to elucidate the risk factors for dyskinesia.Methods: A total of 1974 PD patients from Mainland China were systematically investigated by univariable and multivariable analyses. PD patients with and without dyskinesia were stratified into 4 groups according to levodopa equivalent daily dose (LEDD) and analyzed by a Cox proportional hazards model. A longitudinal study of 87 patients with dyskinesia was classified into 3 groups according to the duration from onset of PD to the initiation of levodopa, and comparisons among groups were analyzed by the Mann-Whitney test.Results: Early age of onset, long disease duration, being female, high LEDD, low UPDRS III scores (ON-state) and high Hoehn-Yahr stage (ON-state) were predictors of dyskinesia. Dyskinesia was levodopa dosage-dependent, and the incidence increased remarkably when LEDD exceeded 300 mg/d (p < 0.05). The emergence of dyskinesia had no association with the initiation time of levodopa, and if the latter was more than 4 years, the duration of time on chronic levodopa free of motor complications was significantly shortened.Conclusions: We found risk factors for the prediction of dyskinesia. Our data shows that physicians should be cautious if the LEDD exceeds 300 mg/d. The development of dyskinesia was not correlated with the time of levodopa initiation
