    Relationship between occupational stress and job burnout among rural-to-urban migrant workers in Dongguan, China: a cross-sectional study

    Objectives: In China, there have been an increasing number of migrant workers from rural to urban areas, and migrant workers have the highest incidence of occupational diseases. However, few studies have examined the impact of occupational stress on job burnout in these migrant workers. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between occupational stress and job burnout among migrant workers. Design: This study used a cross-sectional survey. Setting: This investigation was conducted in Dongguan city, Guangdong Province, China. Participants: 3806 migrant workers, aged 18–60 years, were randomly selected using multistage sampling procedures. Primary and secondary outcome measures: Multistage sampling procedures were used to examine demographic characteristics, behaviour customs and jobrelated data. Hierarchical linear regression and logistic regression models were constructed to explore the relationship between occupational stress and burnout. Results: Demographics, behaviour customs and jobrelated characteristics significantly affected on burnout. After adjusting for the control variable, a high level of emotional exhaustion was associated with high role overload, high role insufficiency, high role boundary, high physical environment, high psychological strain, high physical strain, low role ambiguity, low responsibility and low vocational strain. A high level of depersonalisation was associated with high role overload, high role ambiguity, high role boundary, high interpersonal strain, high recreation, low physical environment and low social support. A low level of personal accomplishment was associated with high role boundary, high role insufficiency, low responsibility, low social support, low physical environment, low self-care and low interpersonal strain. Compared to the personal resources, the job strain and personal strain were more likely to explain the burnout of rural-to-urban migrant workers in our study. Conclusions: The migrant workers have increased job burnouts in relation to occupational stress. Relieving occupational stress and maintaining an appropriate quantity and quality of work could be important measures for preventing job burnout among these workers

    The relationship between atrial fibrillation and NLRP3 inflammasome: a gut microbiota perspective

    Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common clinical arrhythmia whose pathogenesis has not been fully elucidated, and the inflammatory response plays an important role in the development of AF. The inflammasome is an important component of innate immunity and is involved in a variety of pathophysiologic processes. The NLRP3 inflammasome is by far the best studied and validated inflammasome that recognizes multiple pathogens through pattern recognition receptors of innate immunity and mediates inflammatory responses through activation of Caspase-1. Several studies have shown that NLRP3 inflammasome activation contributes to the onset and development of AF. Ecological dysregulation of the gut microbiota has been associated with the development of AF, and some evidence suggests that gut microbiota components, functional byproducts, or metabolites may induce or exacerbate the development of AF by directly or indirectly modulating the NLRP3 inflammasome. In this review, we report on the interconnection of NLRP3 inflammasomes and gut microbiota and whether this association is related to the onset and persistence of AF. We discuss the potential value of pharmacological and dietary induction in the management of AF in the context of the association between the NLRP3 inflammasome and gut microbiota. It is hoped that this review will lead to new therapeutic targets for the future management of AF

    The Yield-Forming Role of Nitrogen in Rice in the Growing Seasons with Variable Thermal Conditions

    A reduced basal and increased topdressing fertilizer rate (RBIT) can usually increase rice yield, but whether this practice alleviates the impact of poor weather on rice production is unknown. Thus, the effect of three integrated RBIT treatments (RBITs, including RBIT alone, RBIT in combination with straw incorporation (RBITS) or a reduced fertilizer rate (RBITR)) on rice growth and nutritional status under different weathers was investigated in a 9-year experiment. Conventional fertilization (CF) was the control. We found that daytime temperature and light (DTL) after heading were the main meteorological factors limiting rice yield increases. RBITs did not affect rice yield under High-DTL, compared with CF, but RBITS significantly increased rice yield under Low-DTL. Compared with High-DTL, the positive effect of RBIT and RBITR on the N concentration and proportion in vegetative organs under Low-DTL was higher than the K concentration in vegetative organs, but RBITS showed the opposite trend. Regression analysis indicated that the harvest index had stronger correlations with the N concentration (negative), K concentration (positive), and N/K (negative) in vegetative organs under Low-DTL than under High-DTL. Our findings suggested that RBITS could improve rice adaptability to daytime temperature and light changes after heading by balancing crop nutritional status (N/K)

    Exosomes from Human-Induced Pluripotent Stem Cell–Derived Mesenchymal Stromal Cells (hiPSC-MSCs) Protect Liver against Hepatic Ischemia/ Reperfusion Injury via Activating Sphingosine Kinase and Sphingosine-1-Phosphate Signaling Pathway

    Background/Aims: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of exosomes produced by human-induced pluripotent stem cell-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (hiPSC-MSCs-Exo) on hepatic ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury, as well as the underlying mechanisms. Methods: Exosomes derived from hiPSC-MSCs were isolated and characterized both biochemically and biophysically. hiPSC-MSCs-Exo were injected systemically into a murine ischemia/reperfusion injury model via the inferior vena cava, and then the therapeutic effects were evaluated. The serum levels of transaminases (aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT), as well as histological changes were examined. Primary hepatocytes and human hepatocyte cell line HL7702 were used to test whether exosomes could induce hepatocytes proliferation in vitro. In addition, the expression levels of proliferation markers (proliferation cell nuclear antigen, PCNA; Phosphohistone-H3, PHH3) were measured by immunohistochemistry and Western blot. Moreover, SK inhibitor (SKI-II) and S1P1 receptor antagonist (VPC23019) were used to investigate the role of sphingosine kinase and sphingosine-1-phosphate-dependent pathway in the effects of hiPSC-MSCs-Exo on hepatocytes. Results: hiPSCs were efficiently induced into hiPSC-MSCs that had typical MSC characteristics. hiPSC-MSCs-Exo had diameters ranging from 100 to 200 nm and expressed exosome markers (Alix, CD63 and CD81). After hiPSC-MSCs-Exo administration, hepatocyte necrosis and sinusoidal congestion were markedly suppressed in the ischemia/reperfusion injury model, with lower histopathological scores. The levels of hepatocyte injury markers AST and ALT were significantly lower in the treatment group compared to control, and the expression levels of proliferation markers (PCNA and PHH3) were greatly induced after hiPSC-MSCs-Exo administration. Moreover, hiPSC-MSCs-Exo also induced primary hepatocytes and HL7702 cells proliferation in vitro in a dose-dependent manner. We found that hiPSC-MSCs-Exo could directly fuse with target hepatocytes or HL7702 cells and increase the activity of sphingosine kinase and synthesis of sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P). Furthermore, the inhibition of SK1 or S1P1 receptor completely abolished the protective and proliferative effects of hiPSC-MSCs-Exo on hepatocytes, both in vitro and in vivo. Conclusions: Our results demonstrated that hiPSC-MSCs-Exo could alleviate hepatic I/R injury via activating sphingosine kinase and sphingosine-1-phosphate pathway in hepatocytes and promote cell proliferation. These findings represent a novel mechanism that potentially contributes to liver regeneration and have important implications for new therapeutic approaches to acute liver disease

    Post-abortion family planning counselling practice among abortion service providers in China: a nationwide cross-sectional study

    Objective: To assess the practice of post-abortion family planning (PAFP) counselling among Chinese abortion service providers, and identify the influencing factors. Methods: A cross-sectional questionnaire survey was conducted between July and September 2013 among abortion services providers in 30 provinces in China. Univariate and multivariable logistic regression analyses were used to identify the factors that influenced PAFP counselling. Results: 94% of the 579 service providers responded to the questionnaire in the survey. The median age was 39 years (range 20–72), and 95% were females. 92% providers showed a positive attitude and had promoted the PAFP counselling services; however, only 57% spent more than 10 min for it. The overall knowledge on PAFP was limited to the participants. After adjusting for potential confounding factors: providers from the middle region (compared with ‘east region’, ORadj = 3.33, 95% CI: 2.12–5.21) conducted more PAFP counseling; providers with more knowledge (ORadj = 2.08, 95% CI: 1.38–3.15) provided more counseling; and compared with ‘middle school and below’, providers with higher education gave more counseling [ORadj(95% CI)] for ‘college’, ‘university’ and ‘master/doctor’ [1.99 (1.01,3.92), 2.32 (1.22,4.40) and 2.34 (1.06,5.17), respectively]. Conclusions: The majority of providers could provide PAFP counselling to women undergone an abortion, but some of them had insufficient time to make it available. Education, knowledge about fertility and reproductive health and residence region were the main factors influencing the practice. Training of health providers and integrating family planning as a part of abortion services are essential to provide adequate PAFP to abortion seekers, thereby reducing the risk of unintended pregnancy

    AbstractReactive oxygen species (ROS) are important signaling molecules in plants that contribute to stress adaption. This study demonstrated that ROS play a critical role in Fe deficiency-induced signaling at an early stage in Malus xiaojinensis. Once ROS production has been initiated, prolonged Fe starvation leads to activation of ROS scavenging mechanisms. Further, we demonstrated that ROS scavengers are involved in maintaining the cellular redox homeostasis during prolonged Fe deficiency treatment. Taken together, our results describe a feedback repression loop for ROS to preserve redox homeostasis and maintain a continuous Fe deficiency response in the Fe-efficient woody plant M. xiaojinensis. More broadly, this study reveals a new mechanism in which ROS mediate both positive and negative regulation of plant responses to Fe deficiency stress

    Repeat induced abortion in 30 Chinese provinces: A cross‐sectional study

    Objective: To report the proportion and determinants of repeat induced abortions in China. Methods: Cross‐sectional data were collected of 79 954 women who received an induced abortion from 297 hospitals across 30 Chinese provinces in 2013, using a stratified cluster sampling design. Logistic and Poisson regression models were fitted to identify characteristics associated with repeat abortion. Putative factors included age, household registration (hukou) status, marital status, education, occupation, reproductive history, and current contraceptive practices. Results: Of all abortions, 65.2% were repeat induced abortions. The proportion of repeat abortions varied substantially across provinces, from 36.9% in Qinghai to 85% in Hubei. The strongest factors associated with repeat induced abortion were being older than 40 years (adjusted odds ratio [ORadj] 7.0, 95% confidence interval [CI] 6.2–7.9), divorced or widowed (ORadj 2.1, 95% CI 1.6–2.7), and using oral contraceptives (ORadj 2.1, 95% CI 1.9–2.3). Conclusion: A high proportion of repeat induced abortion was observed across many Chinese provinces, highlighting the need to reduce the incidence of unwanted pregnancy. Several sociodemographic and clinical factors were found to be significantly associated with repeat abortions and should be considered in post‐abortion family planning services
