Periodic vortex shedding in the supersonic wake of a planar plate
Vortex sheets in the wake have been mainly studied in incompressible flows and in the transonic region. Heinemann et al. (1976) have shown that for the subsonic region the Strouhal number is nearly independent of the Mach number. Motallebi and Norbury (1981) have observed an increase in the Strouhal number in transonic supersonic flow at Mach numbers up to 1.25. The present investigation is concerned with an extension of the studies of vortex shedding to higher supersonic Mach numbers, taking into account questions regarding the possibility of a generation of stable von Karman vortex paths in the considered Mach number range. It is found that the vortex sheet observed in a supersonic wake behind a rough plate is only stable and reproducible in cases involving a certain surface roughness and certain aspects of trailing edge geometry
Active Ontology: An Information Integration Approach for Dynamic Information Sources
In this paper we describe an ontology-based information integration approach that is suitable for highly dynamic distributed information sources, such as those available in Grid systems. The main challenges addressed are: 1) information changes frequently and information requests have to be answered quickly in order to provide up-to-date information; and 2) the most suitable information sources have to be selected from a set of different distributed ones that can provide the information needed. To deal with the first challenge we use an information cache that works with an update-on-demand policy. To deal with the second we add an information source selection step to the usual architecture used for ontology-based information integration. To illustrate our approach, we have developed an information service that aggregates metadata available in hundreds of information services of the EGEE Grid infrastructure
Electronic structure and superconductivity of BiS2-based compounds LaO1-xFxBiS2
Using the density-functional perturbation theory with structural
optimization, we investigate the electronic structure, phonon spectra, and
superconductivity of BiS2-based layered compounds LaO1-xFxBiS2. For
LaO0.5F0.5BiS2, the calculated electron-phonon coupling constant is equal to
lambda = 0.8, and obtained Tc = 9.1 K is very close to its experimental value,
indicating that it is a conventional electron-phonon superconductor
Spatial organization and evolutional period of the epidemic model using cellular automata
We investigate epidemic models with spatial structure based on the cellular
automata method. The construction of the cellular automata is from the study by
Weimar and Boon about the reaction-diffusion equations [Phys. Rev. E 49, 1749
(1994)]. Our results show that the spatial epidemic models exhibit the
spontaneous formation of irregular spiral waves at large scales within the
domain of chaos. Moreover, the irregular spiral waves grow stably. The system
also shows a spatial period-2 structure at one dimension outside the domain of
chaos. It is interesting that the spatial period-2 structure will break and
transform into a spatial synchronous configuration in the domain of chaos. Our
results confirm that populations embed and disperse more stably in space than
they do in nonspatial counterparts.Comment: 6 papges,5 figures. published in Physics Review
Grid Metadata Lifetime Control in ActOn
In the Semantic Grid, metadata, as first class citizens, should be maintained up to-date in a cost-effective manner. This includes maxi missing the automation of different aspects of the metadata lifecycle, managing the evolution and change of metadata in distributed contexts, and synchronizing adequately the evolution of all these related entities. In this paper, we introduce a semantic model and its operations which is designed for supporting dynamic metadata management in Active Ontology (Act On), a semantic information integration approach for highly dynamic information sources. Finally, we illustrate the Act On-based metadata lifetime control by EGEE examples
Neutrino Masses, Lepton Flavor Mixing and Leptogenesis in the Minimal Seesaw Model
We present a review of neutrino phenomenology in the minimal seesaw model
(MSM), an economical and intriguing extension of the Standard Model with only
two heavy right-handed Majorana neutrinos. Given current neutrino oscillation
data, the MSM can predict the neutrino mass spectrum and constrain the
effective masses of the tritium beta decay and the neutrinoless double-beta
decay. We outline five distinct schemes to parameterize the neutrino
Yukawa-coupling matrix of the MSM. The lepton flavor mixing and baryogenesis
via leptogenesis are investigated in some detail by taking account of possible
texture zeros of the Dirac neutrino mass matrix. We derive an upper bound on
the CP-violating asymmetry in the decay of the lighter right-handed Majorana
neutrino. The effects of the renormalization-group evolution on the neutrino
mixing parameters are analyzed, and the correlation between the CP-violating
phenomena at low and high energies is highlighted. We show that the observed
matter-antimatter asymmetry of the Universe can naturally be interpreted
through the resonant leptogenesis mechanism at the TeV scale. The
lepton-flavor-violating rare decays, such as , are also
discussed in the supersymmetric extension of the MSM.Comment: 50 pages, 22 EPS figures, macro file ws-ijmpe.cls included, accepted
