A systematic algorithm development for image processing feature extraction in automatic visual inspection : a thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Technology in the Department of Production Technology, Massey University
Image processing techniques applied to modern quality control are described together with the development of feature extraction algorithms for automatic visual inspection. A real-time image processing hardware system already available in the Department of Production Technology is described and has been tested systematically for establishing an optimal threshold function. This systematic testing has been concerned with edge strength and system noise information. With the a priori information of system signal and noise, non-linear threshold functions have been established for real time edge detection. The performance of adaptive thresholding is described and the usefulness of this nonlinear approach is demonstrated from results using machined test samples. Examination and comparisons of thresholding techniques applied to several edge detection operators are presented. It is concluded that, the Roberts' operator with a non-linear thresholding function has the advantages of being simple, fast, accurate and cost effective in automatic visual inspection
Periodic vortex shedding in the supersonic wake of a planar plate
Vortex sheets in the wake have been mainly studied in incompressible flows and in the transonic region. Heinemann et al. (1976) have shown that for the subsonic region the Strouhal number is nearly independent of the Mach number. Motallebi and Norbury (1981) have observed an increase in the Strouhal number in transonic supersonic flow at Mach numbers up to 1.25. The present investigation is concerned with an extension of the studies of vortex shedding to higher supersonic Mach numbers, taking into account questions regarding the possibility of a generation of stable von Karman vortex paths in the considered Mach number range. It is found that the vortex sheet observed in a supersonic wake behind a rough plate is only stable and reproducible in cases involving a certain surface roughness and certain aspects of trailing edge geometry
Electronic structure and superconductivity of BiS2-based compounds LaO1-xFxBiS2
Using the density-functional perturbation theory with structural
optimization, we investigate the electronic structure, phonon spectra, and
superconductivity of BiS2-based layered compounds LaO1-xFxBiS2. For
LaO0.5F0.5BiS2, the calculated electron-phonon coupling constant is equal to
lambda = 0.8, and obtained Tc = 9.1 K is very close to its experimental value,
indicating that it is a conventional electron-phonon superconductor
Universal Elasticity and Fluctuations of Nematic Gels
We study elasticity of spontaneously orientationally-ordered amorphous
solids, characterized by a vanishing transverse shear modulus, as realized for
example by nematic elastomers and gels. We show that local heterogeneities and
elastic nonlinearities conspire to lead to anomalous nonlocal universal
elasticity controlled by a nontrivial infared fixed point. Namely, at long
scales, such solids are characterized by universal shear and bending moduli
that, respectively, vanish and diverge at long scales, are universally
incompressible and exhibit a universal negative Poisson ratio and a non-Hookean
elasticity down to arbitrarily low strains. Based on expansion about five
dimensions, we argue that the nematic order is stable to thermal fluctuation
and local hetergeneities down to d_lc < 3.Comment: 4 RevTeX pgs, submitted to PR
Factors Influencing the Purchase of Live Seafood in the North Central Region of the United States
This study assesses the preferences of shoppers of live seafood products in the North Central Region of the US accounting for heterogeneity in their preferences. The results suggest that quality assurance considerations and high incomes are factors that would increase the probability of higher expenditures on live fish/shellfish. The purchase of saltwater fish and shellfish also increased the probability of higher expenditures. The North Central Region produces freshwater seafood, and maintaining fish quality through the production process is important to this niche market. Shoppers also purchased live seafood frequently, signifying the importance of availability.Live fish, preferences, random parameters ordered probit, Consumer/Household Economics, Food Consumption/Nutrition/Food Safety, Institutional and Behavioral Economics, Public Economics, Q11, Q21, Q22,
