Physical Properties of H II Regions in M51 from Spectroscopic Observations

M51 and NGC 5195 is an interacting system that can be explored in great details with ground-based telescopes. The H II regions in M51 were observed using the 2.16 m telescope of the National Astronomical Observatories of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the 6.5 m Multiple Mirror Telescope with spatial resolution of less than ∼100\sim100 pc. We obtain a total of 113 spectra across the galaxy and combine the literature data of Croxall et al. to derive a series of physical properties, including the gas-phase extinction, stellar population age, star formation rate (SFR) surface density, and oxygen abundance. The spatial distributions and radial profiles of these properties are investigated in order to study the characteristics of M51 and the clues to the formation and evolution of this galaxy. M51 presents a mild radial extinction gradient. The lower gas-phase extinction in the north spiral arms compared to the south arms are possibly caused by the past encounters with the companion galaxy of NGC 5195. A number of H II regions have the stellar age between 50 and 500 Myr, consistent with the recent interaction history by simulations in the literatures. The SFR surface density presents a mild radial gradient, which is ubiquitous in spiral galaxies. There is a negative metallicity gradient of −0.08-0.08 dex Re−1R_{e}^{-1} in the disk region, which is also commonly found in many spiral galaxies. It is supported by the "inside-out" scenario of galaxy formation. We find a positive abundance gradient of 0.26 dex Re−1R_{e}^{-1} in the inner region. There are possible reasons causing the positive gradient, including the freezing of the chemical enrichment due to the star-forming quenching in the bulge and the gas infall and dilution due to the pseudobulge growth and/or galactic interaction.Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures, 1 appendix, Accepted for publication in PASP. The world-class Shimensi tungsten (W)-polymetallic deposit is located in Jiangnan Orogen, with an estimated reserve of 742.5 kt WO3 @ 0.195% W, 403.6 kt Cu and 28 kt Mo. In this paper, the trace elements and Pb-O isotopes of scheelite (the main ore mineral) are presented to study the ore-forming material source and ore-forming fluid evolution. The results show that the REE distribution in scheelite is mainly controlled by the substitution mechanism of 3Ca2+ = 2REE3+ + □Ca (where □Ca is the Ca-site vacancy). Oxygen isotope data indicate that the scheelite mineralization occurred under high-temperature oxygen isotope equilibrium conditions, and that the ore-forming fluid has a magmatic–hydrothermal origin. The variation in scheelite Eu anomalies and the wide range of scheelite Y/Ho ratio indicate that the ore-forming fluid evolves from reducing to oxidizing, and the early-stage and late-stage ore-forming fluid may have been relatively rich in F− and HCO3−, respectively. The significant Mo decrease in scheelite from the early to late stage that are opposite to the influence of fO2 variation may have resulted from the crystallization of molybdenite and Mo-rich scheelite. Lead isotopes of the ore minerals of scheelite, wolframite, molybdenite and chalcopyrite can be divided into three groups, similar to these of feldspars in different granites. Both the Mesozoic porphyritic and fine-grained biotite granites have Pb isotope ratios similar to the ores, which suggests that the former two are the main ore material source

Geology and molybdenite Re–Os age of the Dahutang granite-related veinlets-disseminated tungsten ore field in the Jiangxin Province, China

This is a brief research report about the recently-discovered and currently being explored Dahutang tungsten deposit (or ore field) in northwestern Jiangxi, south-central China. The deposit is located south of the Middle–Lower Yangtze River valley Cu–Au–Mo–Fe porphyry–skarn belt (YRB). The mineralization is genetically associated with Cretaceous porphyritic biotite granite and fine-grained biotite granite and is mainly hosted within a Neoproterozoic biotite granodiorite batholith. The Dahutang ore field comprises veinlets-disseminated (~ 95% of the total reserve), breccia (~ 4%) and wolframite–scheelite quartz vein (~ 1%) ore styles. The mineralization and alteration are close to the pegmatite shell between the Cretaceous porphyritic biotite granite and Neoproterozoic biotite granodiorite and the three styles of ore bodies mentioned above are related to zoned hydrothermal alteration that includes greisenization, K-feldspar alteration, silicification, carbonatization, chloritization and fluoritization arranged in time (early to late) and space (bottom to top). Five samples of molybdenite from the three types of ores have been collected for Re/Os dating. The results show Re/Os model ages ranging from 138.4 Ma to 143.8 Ma, with an isochron age of 139.18 ± 0.97 Ma (MSWD = 2.9). The quite low Re content in molybdenite falls between 0.5 ppm and 7.8 ppm that is indicative of the upper crustal source. This is quite different from molybdenites in the YRB Cu–Au–Mo–Fe porphyry–skarn deposits that contain between 53 ppm and 1169 ppm Re, indicating a mantle source. The Dahutang tungsten system is sub-parallel with the YRB porphyry–skarn Cu–Au–Mo–Fe system. Both are situated in the north margin of the Yangtze Craton and have a close spatial–temporal relationship. This possibly indicates a comparable tectonic setting but different metal sources. Both systems are related to subduction of the Paleo-Pacific plate beneath the Eurasian continent in Early Cretaceous. The Cu–Au–Mo–Fe porphyry–skarn ores are believed genetically related to granitoids derived from the subducting slab, whereas the porphyry W deposits are associated with S-type granitoids produced by remelting of the upper crust by heat from upwelling asthenoshere

According to the daily flow data collected by three representative hydrological stations in the Xiangjiang River basin which are the Guiyang station in the upstream section, the Hengshan station in the midstream section, and the Xiangtan station in the downstream section, and the water environment data collected from the Hunan Water Resources Bulletin, Mann-Kendal method was used to analyze the changes of the annual average flow of the Xiangjiang River basin in the past 20 years as well as the variation of water environment quality in the whole year, flood season and non-flood season. Based on these analysis, the evolution trend of water resources and water environment in the Xiangjiang River basin is further forecasted. The results show that the annual runoff of the upper reaches of the Xiangjiang River basin tends to be stable, and the runoff of the middle and lower reaches is decreasing. The water quality of the Xiangjiang River basin got deteriorated from 1996 to 2010. A sudden change occurred around 2012, and the water quality of the basin gradually improved

Potential role of maternal lineage in the thoroughbred breeding strategy

Many studies have focused on identifying the genes or single nucleotide polymorphisms associated with the athletic ability of thoroughbreds, but few have considered differences in maternal and paternal heritability of athletic ability. Herein, we report on our association study of career race performances of 675 Australian thoroughbreds with their pedigrees. Racing performance data (prize money per start) were collected from the Bloodhound database. The performance of all horses was categorised as either poor or elite athletic achievement. Then, 675 foals were divided by their parents’ performance (elite or poor) into four groups: (1) elite dams and elite sires; (2) elite dams and poor sires; (3) poor dams and elite sires; and (4) poor dams and poor sires. The performance of foals was then compared between the four groups. The results show that the heritability of race performance between dams and foals (r = 0.141,P \u3c 0.001) is much higher than that between sires and foals (r = 0.035, P = 0.366), and that this difference is statistically significant (P \u3c 0.05). We also examined the effect of the child-bearing age of dams and sires on the ratio of elite foals. We found a strong correlation between the number of elite foals and dams’ child-bearing age (r = –0.105, P \u3c 0.001), with the ratio of elite offspring reaching a high level between a child-bearing age of 8 and 11 years (χ2 = 14.31, d.f. = 1,P \u3c 0.001). These findings suggest that the maternal line may play an important role in the selective breeding of athletic performance in thoroughbreds
