    Morinda Officinalis

    Varicoceles (VCs) are the predominant cause of male infertility and are a risk factor for chronic venous disease. Morinda officinalis (M. officinalis) is a traditional Chinese medicine used to tonify the kidney and strengthen yang. In this study, we evaluated the effects of water-soluble polysaccharides extracted from M. officinalis (MOPs) on gonadotropin-release hormone (GnRH) secretion in a classic experimental left VC (ELV) rat model. Intragastric administration of MOPs at a dose ranging from 50 mg kg−1 to 100 mg kg−1 facilitated improvements in sperm parameters and seminiferous epithelial structures, modulated serum hormone profiles, and stimulated GnRH synthesis and release in the hypothalamus. MOPs also promoted spinogenesis and functional spine maturation in the arcuate nuclei (Arc), wherein they acted mainly on Kiss1 and GnRH neurons. Moreover, MOP-mediated Kisspeptin-GPR54 pathway upregulation and MAPK phosphorylation activation may have been responsible for increases in GnRH synthesis and release. Collectively, the findings of this study indicate that MOPs were effective in stimulating GnRH secretion, possibly by upregulating the Kiss1/GPR54 pathway and enhancing synaptic plasticity, and that MOPs can serve as a therapy for early VCs

    The circular economy in China: Achievements, challenges and potential implications for decarbonisation

    China's wide-ranging circular economy (CE) efforts have been studied multiple times from a range of perspectives. Synthesizing the relevant literature, this paper provides a critical reflection on the transition to a CE in China. Key factors for China's success in shifting towards a CE are seen in multi-level indicators and upscaling niches. This paper makes a novel contribution on limitations to progress, based on emerging evidence on CE projects that fail to sustain. Enriched by experts feedback, this paper critically addresses future challenges to a deep transition resulting from implementation gaps between early majorities and mass markets and coordination challenges arising through regional and sectoral differences. In light of China's commitments to climate neutrality by 2060, such challenges are considered serious. Based on feasible policy learning, the paper however proposes synergies between the CE and decarbonisation driven by efficiency improvements, comprehensive core indicators, upscaling and urban policies as trigger for deeper transformations. Finally the paper undertakes broader reflections and an outlook on evidence-orientated policy learning for a CE and decarbonisation in China

    Identification of Cassava MicroRNAs under Abiotic Stress

    Edwardsiella ictaluri (E. ictaluri) is one of the main bacterial pathogens in catfish which has caused serious economic loss to yellow catfish (Pelteobagrus fulvidraco) in China. In our previous work, we demonstrated that CypA was up-regulated at the early stage of E. ictaluri infection in yellow catfish and displayed strong chemotactic activity for leukocytes in vitro. However, the effect of CypA on E. ictaluri is unknown in vivo. Therefore, two homozygous transgenic zebrafish lines expressing yellow catfish CypA (TG-CypA-1 and TG-CypA-2) were generated. After challenged with E. ictaluri at a dose of 1.0 x 10(4) CFU per adult fish, both two transgenic lines exhibited a higher resistance to bacterial infection than the wildtype zebrafish. Herein, CypA gene in E. ictalurichallenged yellow catfish was screened for presence of polymorphisms by sequencing and six single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were identified. SNP association analysis revealed that 528T/C SNP in the first intron was significantly different in disease-susceptible and-resistant groups, which was confirmed in two independent populations of yellow catfish. Moreover, the relative expression of CypA in the resistant group (CC genotype in 528T/C SNP) was significantly higher than that in the susceptible group (TT genotype in 528T/C SNP) in different immune organs of yellow catfish including spleen, head kidney, body kidney and liver. Our results reveal the potential function of CypA in host defense to bacterial infection and suggest the SNP marker in CypA gene associated with the resistance to E. ictaluri may facilitate the selective breeding of disease-resistant yellow catfish in the future

    Probiotic Lactobacillus rhamnosus GR-1 supplementation attenuates Pb-induced learning and memory deficits by reshaping the gut microbiota

    Lead (Pb) exposure during early life has been associated with an increased risk of neurodevelopmental disorders, including learning and memory deficits. The intestinal flora, via the microbiome–gut–brain axis, could play a significant role in the nervous system. However, the effects of probiotics on ameliorating Pb-induced learning and memory deficits are still unclear. In this study, we showed that adolescent Pb exposure (150 ppm) for 2 months impaired spatial learning and memory ability, accompanied by the decreasing diversity of gut microbiota, and the decreasing abundance of Lactobacillus at the genus level. Surprisingly, administration of the Lactobacillus rhamnosus GR-1 (1010 organisms/rat/day), not L. rhamnosus LGG or Lactobacillus reuteri RC-14, reversed learning and memory deficits induced by Pb exposure. Meanwhile, administration of the L. rhamnosus GR-1 increased the diversity of the gut microbiota composition and partially normalized the genus level of Lactobacillus, Parabacteroides, Enterococcus, and Akkermansia in Pb-exposed rats. Notably, supplementation of L. rhamnosus GR-1 decreased the gut permeability of Pb-exposed rats, reduced proinflammatory cytokines [interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and IL-6] expression, and promoted anti-inflammatory cytokines [granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF)] expression. Interestingly, neural cell treatment with G-CSF rescued Pb-induced neurotoxicity. In general, L. rhamnosus GR-1 supplementation recovered the Pb-induced loss of intestinal bacteria (Lactobacillus), which may have reversed the damage to learning and memory ability. Collectively, our findings demonstrate an unexpectedly pivotal role of L. rhamnosus GR-1 in Pb-induced cognitive deficits and identify a potential probiotic therapy for cognitive dysfunction during early life

    Polysaccharide Extracted from Laminaria japonica

    This study aimed to determine the effect of topically applied Laminaria polysaccharide (LP) on skin aging. We applied ointment containing LP (10, 25, and 50 μg/g) or vitamin E (10 μg/g) to the dorsal skin of aging mice for 12 months and young control mice for 4 weeks. Electron microscopy analysis of skin samples revealed that LP increased dermal thickness and skin collagen content. Tissue inhibitor of metalloprotease- (TIMP-) 1 expression was upregulated while that of matrix metalloproteinase- (MMP-) 1 was downregulated in skin tissue of LP-treated as compared to untreated aging mice. Additionally, phosphorylation of c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) and p38 was higher in aging skin than in young skin, while LP treatment suppressed phospho-JNK expression. LP application also enhanced the expression of antioxidative enzymes in skin tissue, causing a decrease in malondialdehyde levels and increases in superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase levels relative to those in untreated aging mice. These results indicate that LP inhibits MMP-1 expression by preventing oxidative stress and JNK phosphorylation, thereby delaying skin collagen breakdown during aging

    Abstract Internet traffic classification based on flow statistics using machine learning has attracted great attention. Wireless mesh networks (WMNs) facilitate the extension of wireless local area networks into wide areas and have emerged as a key technology for next-generation wireless networking. Online and accurate traffic classification is a key challenge for wirless mesh network management. We propose an online wireless mesh network traffic classfication using C4.5. We evaluate the effectiveness of our proposed method through the experiments on real mesh traffic traces. Experiment results illustrate this method can classify online wireless mesh network traffic with high accuracy

    Improved Receivers for Optical Wireless OFDM: An Information Theoretic Perspective

    We consider performance enhancement of asymmetrically-clipped optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (ACO-OFDM) and related optical OFDM schemes, which are variations of OFDM in intensity-modulated optical wireless communications. Unlike most existing studies on specific designs of improved receivers, this paper investigates information theoretic limits of all possible receivers. For independent and identically distributed complex Gaussian inputs, we obtain an exact characterization of information rate of ACO-OFDM with improved receivers for all SNRs. It is proved that the high-SNR gain of improved receivers asymptotically achieve 1/4 bits per channel use, which is equivalent to 3 dB in electrical SNR or 1.5 dB in optical SNR; as the SNR decreases, the maximum achievable SNR gain of improved receivers decreases monotonically to a non-zero low-SNR limit, corresponding to an information rate gain of 36.3%. For practically used constellations, we derive an upper bound on the gain of improved receivers. Numerical results demonstrate that the upper bound can be approached to within 1 dB in optical SNR by combining existing improved receivers and coded modulation. We also show that our information theoretic analyses can be extended to Flip-OFDM and PAM-DMT. Our results imply that, for the considered schemes, improved receivers may reduce the gap to channel capacity significantly at low-to-moderate SNR.Comment: 15 pages, 17 figures.To appear in IEEE Transactions on Communication
