Boosting oxygen evolution over inverse spinel Fe-Co-Mn oxide nanocubes through electronic structure engineering
Fossil fuels are urgent to be replaced with renewable energies to achieve carbon neutrality. Intermittent renewable energies such as solar and wind could be stored in chemical bonds, such as hydrogen and carbon-containing chemicals through water and CO2 electrolyzers respectively. Those two energy systems share a common anodic reaction, the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER), which currently relies on precious noble metals to achieve a reasonable energy conversion efficiency. Herein, tuning the d-band center of Fe-based inverse spinel oxides has been achieved through compositions and morphologies engineering. Ternary Mn0.5Co0.5Fe2O4 nanocubes exhibit oxygen evolution activity superior to the benchmark RuO2. Mössbauer and in-situ infrared spectra combined with density functional theory calculations prove that the optimized d-band center offers a balanced adsorption strength of intermediate *OOH on Mn0.5Co0.5Fe2O4 nanocubes. This work provides a promising approach to the design and synthesis of highly efficient electrocatalysts beyond oxygen evolution.</p
Psychological mechanisms of English academic stress and academic burnout: the mediating role of rumination and moderating effect of neuroticism
IntroductionAcademic stress is a significant and prevalent phenomenon among college students. According to the Demands-Resources Model, when individuals are unable to cope with stress that exceeds their capacity, burnout may occur. Although English courses hold a significant position in university education, there has been limited research on the mechanisms linking English academic stress to English academic burnout.MethodsThis study recruited 1,130 undergraduate students taking English courses. Participants completed online questionnaires assessing English academic stress, rumination, English academic burnout, and neuroticism traits. A moderated mediation model was constructed to examine the relationship among these variables.ResultsThe results indicate that (1) Rumination serves as a mediator in the relationship between English academic stress and burnout; (2) neuroticism significantly moderates the pathway between English academic stress and rumination. Specifically, students with high neuroticism tendencies are more prone to developing rumination when faced with high levels of English academic stress.ConclusionThese findings offer valuable insights into the psychological mechanisms underlying the association between English learning stress and academic burnout. They emphasize the importance of addressing rumination as a mediator and considering individuals’ levels of neuroticism in interventions aimed at preventing and alleviating academic burnout among university students
Large Language Model based Long-tail Query Rewriting in Taobao Search
In the realm of e-commerce search, the significance of semantic matching
cannot be overstated, as it directly impacts both user experience and company
revenue. Along this line, query rewriting, serving as an important technique to
bridge the semantic gaps inherent in the semantic matching process, has
attached wide attention from the industry and academia. However, existing query
rewriting methods often struggle to effectively optimize long-tail queries and
alleviate the phenomenon of "few-recall" caused by semantic gap. In this paper,
we present BEQUE, a comprehensive framework that Bridges the sEmantic gap for
long-tail QUEries. In detail, BEQUE comprises three stages: multi-instruction
supervised fine tuning (SFT), offline feedback, and objective alignment. We
first construct a rewriting dataset based on rejection sampling and auxiliary
tasks mixing to fine-tune our large language model (LLM) in a supervised
fashion. Subsequently, with the well-trained LLM, we employ beam search to
generate multiple candidate rewrites, and feed them into Taobao offline system
to obtain the partial order. Leveraging the partial order of rewrites, we
introduce a contrastive learning method to highlight the distinctions between
rewrites, and align the model with the Taobao online objectives. Offline
experiments prove the effectiveness of our method in bridging semantic gap.
Online A/B tests reveal that our method can significantly boost gross
merchandise volume (GMV), number of transaction (#Trans) and unique visitor
(UV) for long-tail queries. BEQUE has been deployed on Taobao, one of most

Cortical Neural Stem Cell Lineage Progression Is Regulated by Extrinsic Signaling Molecule Sonic Hedgehog.
Neural stem cells (NSCs) in the prenatal neocortex progressively generate different subtypes of glutamatergic projection neurons. Following that, NSCs have a major switch in their progenitor properties and produce Îł-aminobutyric acid (GABAergic) interneurons for the olfactory bulb (OB), cortical oligodendrocytes, and astrocytes. Herein, we provide evidence for the molecular mechanism that underlies this switch in the state of neocortical NSCs. We show that, at around E16.5, mouse neocortical NSCs start to generate GSX2-expressing (GSX2+) intermediate progenitor cells (IPCs). In vivo lineage-tracing study revealed that GSX2+ IPC population gives rise not only to OB interneurons but also to cortical oligodendrocytes and astrocytes, suggesting that they are a tri-potential population. We demonstrated that Sonic hedgehog signaling is both necessary and sufficient for the generation of GSX2+ IPCs by reducing GLI3R protein levels. Dose-related liver injury of Geniposide associated with the alteration in bile acid synthesis and transportation.
Fructus Gardenia (FG), containing the major active constituent Geniposide, is widely used in China for medicinal purposes. Currently, clinical reports of FG toxicity have not been published, however, animal studies have shown FG or Geniposide can cause hepatotoxicity in rats. We investigated Geniposide-induced hepatic injury in male Sprague-Dawley rats after 3-day intragastric administration of 100 mg/kg or 300 mg/kg Geniposide. Changes in hepatic histomorphology, serum liver enzyme, serum and hepatic bile acid profiles, and hepatic bile acid synthesis and transportation gene expression were measured. The 300 mg/kg Geniposide caused liver injury evidenced by pathological changes and increases in serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and γ-glutamytransferase (γ-GT). While liver, but not sera, total bile acids (TBAs) were increased 75% by this dose, dominated by increases in taurine-conjugated bile acids (t-CBAs). The 300 mg/kg Geniposide also down-regulated expression of Farnesoid X receptor (FXR), small heterodimer partner (SHP) and bile salt export pump (BSEP). In conclusion, 300 mg/kg Geniposide can induce liver injury with associated changes in bile acid regulating genes, leading to an accumulation of taurine conjugates in the rat liver. Taurocholic acid (TCA), taurochenodeoxycholic acid (TCDCA) as well as tauro-α-muricholic acid (T-α-MCA) are potential markers for Geniposide-induced hepatic damage
GIVE: portable genome browsers for personal websites.
Growing popularity and diversity of genomic data demand portable and versatile genome browsers. Here, we present an open source programming library called GIVE that facilitates the creation of personalized genome browsers without requiring a system administrator. By inserting HTML tags, one can add to a personal webpage interactive visualization of multiple types of genomics data, including genome annotation, "linear" quantitative data, and genome interaction data. GIVE includes a graphical interface called HUG (HTML Universal Generator) that automatically generates HTML code for displaying user chosen data, which can be copy-pasted into user's personal website or saved and shared with collaborators. Neuraminidase and Hemagglutinin Matching Patterns of a Highly Pathogenic Avian and Two Pandemic H1N1 Influenza A Viruses
BACKGROUND: Influenza A virus displays strong reassortment characteristics, which enable it to achieve adaptation in human infection. Surveying the reassortment and virulence of novel viruses is important in the prevention and control of an influenza pandemic. Meanwhile, studying the mechanism of reassortment may accelerate the development of anti-influenza strategies. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: The hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA) matching patterns of two pandemic H1N1 viruses (the 1918 and current 2009 strains) and a highly pathogenic avian influenza A virus (H5N1) were studied using a pseudotyped particle (pp) system. Our data showed that four of the six chimeric HA/NA combinations could produce infectious pps, and that some of the chimeric pps had greater infectivity than did their ancestors, raising the possibility of reassortment among these viruses. The NA of H5N1 (A/Anhui/1/2005) could hardly reassort with the HAs of the two H1N1 viruses. Many biological characteristics of HA and NA, including infectivity, hemagglutinating ability, and NA activity, are dependent on their matching pattern. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: Our data suggest the existence of an interaction between HA and NA, and the HA NA matching pattern is critical for valid viral reassortment
Cluster-randomized controlled trial of the effects of free glasses on purchase of children's glasses in China:The PRICE (Potentiating Rural Investment in Children's Eyecare) study
Offering free glasses can be important to increase children's wear. We sought to assess whether "Upgrade glasses" could avoid reduced glasses sales when offering free glasses to children in China.In this cluster-randomized, controlled trial, children with uncorrected visual acuity (VA)6/12 in both eyes at 138 randomly-selected primary schools in 9 counties in Guangdong and Yunnan provinces, China, were randomized by school to one of four groups: glasses prescription only (Control); Free Glasses; Free Glasses + offer of 30 Upgrade Glasses. Spectacle purchase (main outcome) was assessed 6 months after randomization.Among 10,234 children screened, 882 (8.62%, mean age 10.6 years, 45.5% boys) were eligible and randomized: 257 (29.1%) at 37 schools to Control; 253 (28.7%) at 32 schools to Free Glasses; 187 (21.2%) at 31 schools to Free Glasses + 30 Upgrade. Baseline ownership among these children needing glasses was 11.8% (104/882), and 867 (98.3%) children completed follow-up. Glasses purchase was significantly less likely when free glasses were given: Control: 59/250 = 23.6%; Free glasses: 32/252 = 12.7%, P = 0.010. Offering Upgrade Glasses eliminated this difference: Free + 30 Upgrade: 38/182 = 20.9%, RR 0.91 (0.59, 1.42), P = 0.69.Upgrade glasses can prevent reductions in glasses purchase when free spectacles are provided, providing important program income.ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT02231606. Yi: Open Foundation Models by 01.AI
We introduce the Yi model family, a series of language and multimodal models
that demonstrate strong multi-dimensional capabilities. The Yi model family is
based on 6B and 34B pretrained language models, then we extend them to chat
models, 200K long context models, depth-upscaled models, and vision-language
models. Our base models achieve strong performance on a wide range of
benchmarks like MMLU, and our finetuned chat models deliver strong human
preference rate on major evaluation platforms like AlpacaEval and Chatbot
Arena. Building upon our scalable super-computing infrastructure and the
classical transformer architecture, we attribute the performance of Yi models
primarily to its data quality resulting from our data-engineering efforts. For
pretraining, we construct 3.1 trillion tokens of English and Chinese corpora
using a cascaded data deduplication and quality filtering pipeline. For
finetuning, we polish a small scale (less than 10K) instruction dataset over
multiple iterations such that every single instance has been verified directly
by our machine learning engineers. For vision-language, we combine the chat
language model with a vision transformer encoder and train the model to align
visual representations to the semantic space of the language model. We further
extend the context length to 200K through lightweight continual pretraining and
demonstrate strong needle-in-a-haystack retrieval performance. We show that
extending the depth of the pretrained checkpoint through continual pretraining
further improves performance. We believe that given our current results,
continuing to scale up model parameters using thoroughly optimized data will
lead to even stronger frontier models
Career-Specific Parenting Practices and Career Decision-Making Self-Efficacy Among Chinese Adolescents: The Interactive Effects of Parenting Practices and the Mediating Role of Autonomy
This study examined the unique and interactive effects of various career-specific parenting practices (i.e., parental career support, interference, and lack of engagement) on Chinese high school students’ career decision-making self-efficacy (CDSE) as well as the mediating role of autonomy in such associations. Based on data from 641 Chinese high school students (47.6% male; mean age = 15.28 years old, SD = 0.49) in 2016, two moderated mediating effects were identified. Higher level of parental career engagement strengthened the positive association between parental career support and adolescents’ autonomy, which in turn, was associated positively with adolescents’ CDSE. Parental career interference related negatively with adolescents’ CDSE via autonomy when lack of parental career engagement was low, but related positively with adolescents’ CDSE via autonomy when lack of parental career engagement was high. These findings advance our understanding of the underlying processes between career-specific parenting practices and adolescents’ CDSE. Implications for practices were discussed
