    Genomic survey, expression profile and co-expression network analysis of OsWD40 family in rice

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>WD40 proteins represent a large family in eukaryotes, which have been involved in a broad spectrum of crucial functions. Systematic characterization and co-expression analysis of <it>OsWD40 </it>genes enable us to understand the networks of the WD40 proteins and their biological processes and gene functions in rice.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In this study, we identify and analyze 200 potential <it>OsWD40 </it>genes in rice, describing their gene structures, genome localizations, and evolutionary relationship of each member. Expression profiles covering the whole life cycle in rice has revealed that transcripts of <it>OsWD40 </it>were accumulated differentially during vegetative and reproductive development and preferentially up or down-regulated in different tissues. Under phytohormone treatments, 25 <it>OsWD40 </it>genes were differentially expressed with treatments of one or more of the phytohormone NAA, KT, or GA3 in rice seedlings. We also used a combined analysis of expression correlation and Gene Ontology annotation to infer the biological role of the <it>OsWD40 </it>genes in rice. The results suggested that <it>OsWD40 </it>genes may perform their diverse functions by complex network, thus were predictive for understanding their biological pathways. The analysis also revealed that <it>OsWD40 </it>genes might interact with each other to take part in metabolic pathways, suggesting a more complex feedback network.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>All of these analyses suggest that the functions of <it>OsWD40 </it>genes are diversified, which provide useful references for selecting candidate genes for further functional studies.</p

    R Functions for Sample Size and Probability Calculations for Assessing Consistency of Treatment Effects in Multi-Regional Clinical Trials

    Multi-regional clinical trials have been widely used for efficient global new drug developments. Due to potential heterogeneity of patient populations, it is critical to evaluate consistency of treatment effects across different regions in a multi-regional trial in order to determine the applicability of the overall treatment effect to the patients in individual regions. Quan et al. (2010) proposed definitions for the assessments of consistency of treatment effects in multi-regional trials. To facilitate the application of their ideas to design multi-regional trials, in this paper, we provide the corresponding R functions for calculating the unconditional and conditional probabilities for demonstrating consistency in relationship with the overall/regional sample sizes and the anticipated treatment effects. Detailed step by step instructions and trial examples are also provided to illustrate the applications of these R functions

    Preparation and Characterization of Cu2ZnSnS4 Thin Films and Solar Cells Fabricated from Quaternary Cu-Zn-Sn-S Target

    CZTS thin films were fabricated through sputtering from a quaternary Cu-Zn-Sn-S target, followed by a sulfurization process. CZTS thin-film solar cells were also fabricated and a highest efficiency of 4.04% was achieved. It has been found that obvious Zn loss occurs during the sputtering and poorly crystallized CZTS are formed in the sputtered films. The Zn loss leads to the appearance of SnS. A sulfurization process can obviously improve the crystallinity of CZTS and films with grain size of several hundred nanometers can be obtained after sulfurization. The optical band gap of the films is estimated to be 1.57 eV. The electrical properties of the 4.04% efficient solar cell were investigated and it has been found that cell has obvious deficiency in minority carrier lifetime. This deficiency should be responsible for the low Jsc and low Voc of our cell

    Strong Neel ordering and luminescence correlation in a two-dimensional antiferromagnet

    Magneto-optical effect has been widely used in light modulation, optical sensing and information storage. Recently discovered two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals layered magnets are considered as promising platforms for investigating novel magneto-optical phenomena and devices, due to the long-range magnetic ordering down to atomically-thin thickness, rich species and tunable properties. However, majority 2D antiferromagnets suffer from low luminescence efficiency which hinders their magneto-optical investigations and applications. Here, we uncover strong light-magnetic ordering interactions in 2D antiferromagnetic MnPS3 utilizing a newly-emerged near-infrared photoluminescence (PL) mode far below its intrinsic bandgap. This ingap PL mode shows strong correlation with the Neel ordering and persists down to monolayer thickness. Combining the DFT, STEM and XPS, we illustrate the origin of the PL mode and its correlation with Neel ordering, which can be attributed to the oxygen ion-mediated states. Moreover, the PL strength can be further tuned and enhanced using ultraviolet-ozone treatment. Our studies offer an effective approach to investigate light-magnetic ordering interactions in 2D antiferromagnetic semiconductors

    Plasmon-phonon coupling in large-area graphene dot and antidot arrays

    Nanostructured graphene on SiO2 substrates pave the way for enhanced light-matter interactions and explorations of strong plasmon-phonon hybridization in the mid-infrared regime. Unprecedented large-area graphene nanodot and antidot optical arrays are fabricated by nanosphere lithography, with structural control down to the sub-100 nanometer regime. The interaction between graphene plasmon modes and the substrate phonons is experimentally demonstrated and structural control is used to map out the hybridization of plasmons and phonons, showing coupling energies of the order 20 meV. Our findings are further supported by theoretical calculations and numerical simulations.Comment: 7 pages including 6 figures. Supporting information is available upon request to author
