    Get PDF
This study explores the relationship between ESG investments and carbon emissions in China. Our results show that 1% increase in environmental investments would cause 0.246% decrease in CO2 emissions and 0.558% decrease in carbon emission intensity. The impact of ESG investment is heterogeneous across the developed and underdeveloped regions. Environmental investments in the advanced eastern region have significantly improved carbon productivity. In contrast, environmental investments in the central and western regions significantly reduced carbon emissions, but they have little impact on carbon productivity

Background and objective Whether pemetrexed plus platinum (PP) regimen is superior to gemcitabine plus platinum (GP) regimen for patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is unclear. The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of PP versus GP regimens for patients with NSCLC. Methods We searched relevant randomized controlled trials (RCTs) from Pubmed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, Chinese Journal Full-text Database, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database, Chinese Scientific Journals Full-text Database, and traced the related references to obtain the information that has not been found. We made quality assessment of qualified RCTs assessed by the exclusion and inclusion criteria and used RevMan 5.0 provided by the Cochrane Collaboration to perform meta-analysis. Results Four RCTs involving 2,235 patients were identified. There were no statistical differences between PP and GP regimens in one-year survival rate (OR=1.09, 95%CI: 0.91-1.29), the efficiency of disease (OR=1.00, 95%CI: 0.40-2.52), but overall survival (MD=0.26, 95%CI: 0.21-0.30), alopecia (OR=0.51, 95%CI: 0.39-0.66) and hematologic toxicity were significantly different. Conclusion The clinical efficiency of PP and GP regimens for advanced NSCLC was similar, but the side effects were different. The toxicity of PP regimen has the tendency to be more tolerable

Bromeliads are of great economic importance in flower production; however little information is available with respect to genetic characterization of cultivated bromeliads thus far. In the present study, a selection of cultivated bromeliads was characterized via inter-simple sequence repeat (ISSR) markers with an emphasis on genetic diversity and population structure. Twelve ISSR primers produced 342 bands, of which 287 (~84%) were polymorphic, with polymorphic bands per primer ranging from 17 to 34. The Jaccard’s similarity ranged from 0.08 to 0.89 and averaged ~0.30 for the investigated bromeliads. The Bayesian-based approach, together with the un-weighted paired group method with arithmetic average (UPGMA)-based clustering and the principal coordinate analysis (PCoA), distinctly grouped the bromeliads from Neoregelia, Guzmania, and Vriesea into three separately clusters, well corresponding with their botanical classifications; whereas the bromeliads of Aechmea other than the recently selected hybrids were not well assigned to a cluster. Additionally, ISSR marker was proven efficient for the identification of hybrids and bud sports of cultivated bromeliads. The findings achieved herein will further our knowledge about the genetic variability within cultivated bromeliads and therefore facilitate breeding for new varieties of cultivated bromeliads in future as well

BACKGROUND: Viral hepatitis is a serious health burden worldwide. To date, few reports have addressed the prevalence of hepatitis A, B, C, and E in China. Therefore, the general epidemiological parameters of viral hepatitis remain unknown. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: In this cross-sectional study, we performed a serological prevalence analysis of viral hepatitis A, B, C, and E in 8,762 randomly selected Chinese subjects, which represented six areas of China. The overall prevalence of anti-Hepatitis C virus antibody (anti-HCV) was 0.58%, which was much lower than was estimated by WHO. The prevalences of Hepatitis B virus surface antigen (HBsAg), anti-Hepatitis B virus surface protein antibody (HBsAb), and anti-Hepatitis B virus core protein antibody (HBcAb) were 5.84%, 41.31%, and 35.92%, respectively, whereas in the group of subjects less than 5 years old, these prevalences were 1.16%, 46.77%, and 8.69% respectively, which suggests that the Hepatitis B virus (HBV)-carrier population is decreasing, and the nationwide HBV vaccine program has contributed to the lowered HBV prevalence in the younger generation in China. Meanwhile, a large deficit remains in coverage provided by the national HBV immune program. In addition, our data suggested the possibility that HBsAb may not last long enough to protect people from HBV infection throughout life. The overall prevalence of anti-Hepatitis A virus antibody (anti-HAV) and anti-Hepatitis E virus antibody (anti-HEV) were as high as 72.87% and 17.66%, respectively. The indices increased with age, which suggests that a large proportion of Chinese adults are protected by latent infection. Furthermore, the pattern of HEV infection was significantly different among ethnic groups in China. CONCLUSIONS: Our study provided much important information concerning hepatitis A, B, C, and E prevalence in China and will contribute to worldwide oversight of viral hepatitis

The Dual Roles of MAGE-C2 in p53 Ubiquitination and Cell Proliferation Through E3 Ligases MDM2 and TRIM28

The tumor suppressor p53 is critical for the maintenance of genome stability and protection against tumor malignant transformation, and its homeostasis is usually regulated by ubiquitination. MDM2 is a major E3 ligase of p53 ubiquitination, and its activity is enhanced by TRIM28. TRIM28 also independently ubiquitinates p53 as an E3 ligase activated by MAGE-C2. Moreover, MAGE-C2 is highly expressed in various cancers, but the detailed mechanisms of MAGE-C2 involved in MDM2/TRIM28-mediated p53 ubiquitination remain unknown. Here, we found that MAGE-C2 directly interacts with MDM2 through its conserved MHD domain to inhibit the activity of MDM2 on p53 ubiquitination. Furthermore, TRIM28 acts as an MAGE-C2 binding partner and directly competes with MAGE-C2 for MDM2 interaction, thus releasing the inhibitory role of MAGE-C2 and promoting p53 ubiquitination. MAGE-C2 suppresses cell proliferation in TRIM28-deficient cells, but the overexpression of TRIM28 antagonizes the inhibitory role of MAGE-C2 and accumulates p53 ubiquitination to promote cell proliferation. This study clarified the molecular link of MAGE-C2 in two major E3 systems MDM2 and TRIM28 on p53 ubiquitination. Our results revealed the molecular function of how MAGE-C2 and TRIM28 contribute to p53 ubiquitination and cell proliferation, in which MAGE-C2 acts as a potential inhibitor of MDM2 and TRIM28 is a vital regulator for MAGE-C2 function in p53 protein level and cell proliferation. This work would be helpful to understand the regulation mechanism of tumor suppressor p53

Risk zoning of hail disaster in Anhui Province based on terrain correction technology

Terrain correction is a key step to ensure the accuracy of risk zoning for hail disasters. This study utilizes the hail observations from 81 national meteorological stations in Anhui Province spanning from 1978 to 2020, along with geographic information data, gross domestic product (GDP), and historical disaster data, to identify causative factors for hail disasters and calculate the hazard-inducing intensity indices by employing statistical methods of correlation analysis and regression analysis. Then, a terrain-involved correction method for hail frequency is established, with the combination of hazard-inducing intensity and frequency, to conduct disaster risk evaluation. According to the theory of natural disaster risk assessment, the Geographic Information System-based economic risk zonation of hail disaster is performed by integrating the hazard-inducing factors and vulnerability factors. The feasibility of zoning results is further verified through the direct economic losses caused by hail disasters. The results show that: (1) the maximum hail diameter and duration of hailfall can be used as hail hazard-inducing factors, as both are significantly correlated with the damage index of hail disaster. The terrain-corrected spatial distributions of hail frequency are well consistent with the actual observations, which better represent spatial distribution variations in high-altitude mountainous areas. (2) the hail-prone areas, as well as the high-risk areas, are located in several regions along the main paths of hail disaster, such as to the north of the Huaihe River, in the eastern regions between the Yangtze River and Huai River, as well as in the mountainous areas of Dabie Mountains and the south part in Anhui Province. (3) The overall economic risk of hail disasters gradually decreases from north to south. The validation by direct economic losses suggests that the correlation coefficient between the economic risk index of hail disaster and the average of direct economic losses over multiple years in Anhui province has passed the significance test with a confidence level of 99%, and the zoning results agree well with the true situations

Abrogation of Endogenous Glycolipid Antigen Presentation on Myelin-Laden Macrophages by D-Sphingosine Ameliorates the Pathogenesis of Experimental Autoimmune Encephalomyelitis

Background: Although myelin is composed of mostly lipids, the pathological role of myelin lipids in demyelinating diseases remains elusive. The principal lipid of the myelin sheath is β-galactosylceramide (β-Galcer). Its α-anomer (α-Galcer) has been demonstrated to be antigenically presented by macrophages via CD1d, a MHC class I-like molecule. Myelin, which is mostly composed of β-Galcer, has been long considered as an immunologically-inert neuron insulator, because the antigen-binding cleft of CD1d is highly α-form-restricted.Results: Here, we report that CD1d-mediated antigenic presentation of myelin-derived galactosylceramide (Mye-GalCer) by macrophages contributed significantly to the progression of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE). Surprisingly, this presentation was recognizable by α-Galcer:CD1d-specific antibody (clone L363), but incapable of triggering expansion of iNKT cells and production of iNKT signature cytokines (IFNγ and IL-4). Likewise, a synthesized analog of Mye-Galcer, fluorinated α-C-GalCer (AA2), while being efficiently presented via CD1d on macrophages, failed to stimulate production of IFNγ and IL-4. However, AA2 significantly exacerbated EAE progression. Further analyses revealed that the antigenic presentations of both Mye-GalCer and its analog (AA2) in α-form via CD1d promoted IL-17 production from T cells, leading to elevated levels of IL-17 in EAE spinal cords and sera. The IL-17 neutralizing antibody significantly reduced the severity of EAE symptoms in AA2-treated mice. Furthermore, D-sphingosine, a lipid possessing the same hydrophobic base as ceramide but without a carbohydrate residue, efficiently blocked this glycolipid antigen presentation both in vitro and in spinal cords of EAE mice, and significantly decreased IL-17 and ameliorated the pathological symptoms. Conclusion: Our findings reveal a novel pathway from the presentation of Mye-GalCer to IL-17 production, and highlight the promising therapeutic potential of D-sphingosine for the human disorder of multiple sclerosis
