    Innovation is widely considered as the core driver of nations\u27 economic growth and competitiveness. Since the start of economic reform in 1978, the provincial governments in China have gained much autonomy, which has led to the co-existence of multi-level innovation systems, national innovation system and regional (provincial) innovation system. With the economic development and social progress, the disparities in innovative capacity (I C) among regions in China are becoming increasingly larger. Considering the unique innovation context of China and drawing upon the research on IC, this paper proposed to employ theories of embedded autonomy and governed interdependence, which was developed to explain the institutional relationships based on newly industrialized Asia countries, to investigate the reason of variations of regional innovative capacity in China

    Temporal-Coded Deep Spiking Neural Network with Easy Training and Robust Performance

    Spiking neural network (SNN) is interesting both theoretically and practically because of its strong bio-inspiration nature and potentially outstanding energy efficiency. Unfortunately, its development has fallen far behind the conventional deep neural network (DNN), mainly because of difficult training and lack of widely accepted hardware experiment platforms. In this paper, we show that a deep temporal-coded SNN can be trained easily and directly over the benchmark datasets CIFAR10 and ImageNet, with testing accuracy within 1% of the DNN of equivalent size and architecture. Training becomes similar to DNN thanks to the closed-form solution to the spiking waveform dynamics. Considering that SNNs should be implemented in practical neuromorphic hardwares, we train the deep SNN with weights quantized to 8, 4, 2 bits and with weights perturbed by random noise to demonstrate its robustness in practical applications. In addition, we develop a phase-domain signal processing circuit schematic to implement our spiking neuron with 90% gain of energy efficiency over existing work.     Efficacy and safety of post-auricular injection of methylprednisolone sodium succinate and lidocaine in the treatment of acute tinnitus, and its effect on sleep quality

    Purpose: To study the efficacy and safety of post-auricular injection of methylprednisolone sodium succinate plus lidocaine in the treatment of acute tinnitus, and its effect on sleep quality.Methods: Eighty acute tinnitus patients admitted to Nanfang Hospital, Southern Medical University, Guangzhou, China from January 2020 to June 2021, served as subjects for this retrospective analysis. The patients were equally assigned to a reference group given postauricular injection of lidocaine, and a research group treated with post-auricular injection of methylprednisolone sodium succinate in combination with lidocaine. Treatment efficacy values in the two groups of patients were determined and compared.Results: Total treatment effectiveness values in patients in the research group after one course of treatment, and at three months post-treatment, were significantly higher than the corresponding values in the reference group (p < 0.05). After treatment, the two groups had markedly improved Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI) scores, although patients in the research group had lower scores than those in reference group (p < 0.05). There were significant decreases in post-treatment pure tone threshold and Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) in the two groups of patients, with lower values in the research group than in the reference group (p < 0.05). There were no obvious adverse drug reactions during treatment and during 3-month follow-up period.Conclusion: Post-auricular injection of methylprednisolone sodium succinate and lidocaine effectively improved the clinical efficacy and the sleep quality of acute tinnitus patients. It is a simple and highly safe operation which merits clinical application

    Forepaw Sensorimotor Deprivation in Early Life Leads to the Impairments on Spatial Memory and Synaptic Plasticity in Rats

    To investigate the influence of forepaw sensorimotor deprivation on memory and synaptic plasticity, Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into two groups: a sham-operated group and a group deprived of forepaw sensorimotor function by microsurgical operation at postnatal day 13 (PN13). Behavioral and electrophysiological studies were performed at PN25, PN35, PN45, and PN60. Open field test was used to assess the spontaneous locomotor activity. Morris water maze was used to evaluate spatial reference learning and memory. The long-term potentiation (LTP) in the medial perforant path—dentate gyrus (MPP-DG) pathway was examined with hippocampal slices. We found that forepaw sensorimotor deprivation did not affect spontaneous activity of the rats. However, spatial reference learning and memory were significantly impaired in their early life (PN25, PN35, and PN45). In accordance with the behavior results, LTP in MPP-DG pathway was significantly suppressed in their early life. These data demonstrated that forepaw sensorimotor deprivation led to the impairments on spatial memory via inducing pronounced deficits in the MPP-DG pathway to exhibit LTP, one of the major cellular mechanisms underlying learning and memory

    Protective effect of grifolin against brain injury in an acute cerebral ischemia rat model

    Purpose: To evaluate the protective effects of grifolin against brain injury in an acute cerebral ischemia rat model.Methods: Rats were assigned to five groups: control, negative control, and grifolin (50, 100, and 200 mg/kg, p.o.) treated groups, which received the drug for 2 weeks. All the animals were sacrificed at the end of the protocol, and tissue homogenates were prepared from isolated brain tissue. Glutathione peroxidase (GPX), superoxide dismutase (SOD), malondialdehyde (MDA), and nitric oxide (NO), as oxidative stress indicators, were determined for the tissue homogenates of the ischemic rats. Inflammatory mediators (cytokines and nuclear factor kappa B p65, NF κB), DNA damage, and ATP and caspase 3 levels in the tissue homogenates were also assessed.Results: Treatment with grifolin increased SOD and GPX significantly and decreased MDA and NO levels in tissue homogenates of the cerebral ischemic rats compared with those in the negative control group (p < 0.05). Treatment with grifolin also attenuated the altered levels of inflammatory mediators (cytokines and NF-κB), caspase 3, and ATP levels in the tissue homogenate of cerebral ischemic rats (p < 0.05). The results of comet assay on the tissue homogenate suggest that treatment with grifolin reduced or prevented damage.Conclusions: The results show that treatment with grifolin protects against neuronal damage in acute cerebral ischemic rats via its anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties.Keywords: Neuroprotection, Cerebral ischemia, Brain injury, DNA, Grifolin, Anti oxidan
