    The Follow-up Report of MRI After Transforaminal Endoscopic Surgery of Lumbar Disc Herniation with Spinal Stenosis

    Objective: To observe the imaging changes of MRI in the responsible disc area after modifed TESSYS foraminal scopy in pa-tients with lumbar disc herniation (LDH), and to explore the postoperative repair time of the responsible disc area, so as to provide imaging reference for the rehabilitation plan of the patients. Materials: To investigate the VAS score and MRI imaging of patients with lumbar disc herniation and spinal stenosis after transforaminal endoscopic surgery, which to lay the foundation for the rehabilitation plan. Methods: Ten patients with lumbar disc herniation (L4/5, L5/S1) with spinal stenosis were collected and followed up by MRI and the VAS score on 1 week, 1 month, 4 months and 6 months after transforaminal endoscopic surgery. Results: The VAS score were signifcantly lower than those before operation (P 0.05) on 1 month and 6 months after operation. The high signal could be seen around the intervertebral foramen and nerve roots on the operation site on 1 week, 1 month and 4 months after operation Which disappeared at 6 months after operation. Con-clusion: The symptoms of low back and leg pain in patients with lumbar disc herniation and spinal canal stenosis disappeared after 1 month, while the infammatory reaction symptoms of intervertebral foramen and nerve root were disappeared on 6 months

    Broadband enhancement of light harvesting in luminescent solar concentrator

    Luminescent solar concentrator (LSC) can absorb large-area incident sunlight, then emit luminescence with high quantum efficiency, which finally be collected by a small photovoltaic (PV) system. The light-harvesting area of the PV system is much smaller than that of the LSC system, potentially improving the efficiency and reducing the cost of solar cells. Here, based on Fermi-golden rule, we present a theoretical description of the luminescent process in nanoscale LSCs where the conventional ray-optics model is no longer applicable. As an example calculated with this new model, we demonstrate that a slot waveguide consisting of a nanometer-sized low-index slot region sandwiched by two high-index regions provides a broadband enhancement of light harvesting by the luminescent centers in the slot region. This is because the slot waveguide can (1) greatly enhance the spontaneous emission due to the Purcell effect, (2) dramatically increase the effective absorption cross-section of luminescent centers, and (3) strongly improve the quantum efficiency of luminescent centers. It is found that about 80% solar photons can be ultimately converted to waveguide-coupled luminescent photons even for a low luminescent quantum efficiency of 0.5. This LSC is potential to construct a tandem structure which can absorb nearly full-spectrum solar photons, and also may be of special interest for building integrated nano-PV applications

    Exact solution of gyration radius of individual's trajectory for a simplified human mobility model

    Gyration radius of individual's trajectory plays a key role in quantifying human mobility patterns. Of particular interests, empirical analyses suggest that the growth of gyration radius is slow versus time except the very early stage and may eventually arrive to a steady value. However, up to now, the underlying mechanism leading to such a possibly steady value has not been well understood. In this Letter, we propose a simplified human mobility model to simulate individual's daily travel with three sequential activities: commuting to workplace, going to do leisure activities and returning home. With the assumption that individual has constant travel speed and inferior limit of time at home and work, we prove that the daily moving area of an individual is an ellipse, and finally get an exact solution of the gyration radius. The analytical solution well captures the empirical observation reported in [M. C. Gonz`alez et al., Nature, 453 (2008) 779]. We also find that, in spite of the heterogeneous displacement distribution in the population level, individuals in our model have characteristic displacements, indicating a completely different mechanism to the one proposed by Song et al.     The New Anthelmintic Tribendimidine is an L-type (Levamisole and Pyrantel) Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptor Agonist

    Intestinal parasitic nematodes or roundworms infect over 1 billion people in tropical countries. Overall, they are a huge source of morbidity in infected people, including children and pregnant women, and are increasingly being recognized as key poverty-promoting parasites. Despite their importance, few drugs for dealing with them exist. Furthermore, none has optimal efficacy, all can be resisted by the parasites, and, for practical reasons, only one is used for single-dose Mass Drug Administrations (MDAs). There is a dire need for better roundworm drugs (anthelmintics). In the past 30 years, only one anthelmintic, tribendimidine, developed by the Chinese CDC, has entered human clinical trials. Tribendimidine has good single-dose efficacy against some roundworm parasites. However, how tribendimidine works was unknown. Here, using the roundworm Caenorhabditis elegans to evolve resistance to tribendimidine in the lab, followed by genetic and molecular testing and cross-resistance drug studies, we demonstrate that tribendimidine is unequivocally in the same drug family as two known anthelmintics, levamisole and pyrantel. These results have important implications for how tribendimidine might be used in MDAs where resistance to current drugs is known or suspected and for how tribendimidine might be combined with other drugs to maximize therapy while minimizing resistance threats
